Human Environmental Sciences
Central Station will be open Tues., April
16, and Thurs., April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. in the HES building.
Kinesiology and Health Studies
On April 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Laura
Puryear from the United States Tennis
Association (UTSA) will be conducting a
workshop providing instruction on how to
implement USTA Tennis Curriculum (K-
12). Stephanie Canada-Phillips will also
provide instruction on blending UTSA
Tennis Curriculum and Common Core
State Standards. This is open to all
educators and students! For further

Dr. Sunshine Cowan’s Community/ Public
Health capstone class had a great turnout
last weekend at the Coffee Creek
Apartments in Edmond to promote better
and healthier living! The students, along
with community partners the Lion’s Club
Foundation, Oklahoma City County
Health Department – Tobacco Use
Prevention, Girl Scouts of Western
Oklahoma, and the UCO Outdoor and
Community Recreation Club were in
attendance.
Donations, health screenings, and other
resources were provided by Integris
Health, Teen Empower, Planned
Parenthood, the UCO Wellness Center,
Wal-Mart, Sonic, Dr. Kristi Cobb, DDS,
OU Medical Center Injury Prevention
Services, Oklahoma City County Western
Health Department, American Cancer
Society, University of Central Oklahoma
Career Services, and Green Leaf
Landscapes.

Drs. Sara Cole and Sunshine Cowan
(Kinesiology and Health Studies) will be in
Orlando, Fla., April 16-19, for the Society
for Public Health Education 64 th Annual
Meeting. Dr. Cole serves on the Board of
Trustees for the Society; Dr. Cowan will
present “Transformative Learning that
Works Magic on Students and the
Communities They Serve”.
Drs. Janette C. Wetsel (Curriculum and
Instruction) will attend the Institute for
Global Education Diplomacy in
Washington D.C., April 17-22. Dr. Wetsel
will co-present with students “Creating
and Implementing a Holiday Policy Plan in
an Early Childhood Classroom” and
“Young Children in Brazil”.
Sara Douglass (Psychology) will make a
presentation at the Society for Research
in Child Development Biennial Meeting on
April 18 in Seattle. The title of the
presentation is “Racial/ Ethnic Teasing
and Anxiety in Adolescents: A Person-by-
Context Approach”.
Drs. Sylvia Hurst, Julie Collins (Advanced
Professional and Special Services) and
DiAnn McDown (Curriculum and
Instruction) will be in San Antonio, April
18-22, to attend the International Reading
Association’s 58 th Annual Convention. Dr.
Collins will present “Assessing CCSS-
Updates from PARCC & Smarter
Balanced: IRA Govt. Relations”.
