An ongoing global challenge is translating the wealth of scientific knowledge into
solutions for human problems. Mastery of applied science and engineering as well as
mastery of the public policy process are both essential elements of development. In this
regard, the emerging policy advisory role of African science academies bodes well for
the progress of health and development in that region.
Charles M. Vest
President, US National Academy of Engineering
Like all good partnerships, the African Science Academy project is a two-way learning
experience. The success of this initiative depends both on changing the way evidencebased
policy advice is generated and received in Africa and on influencing the way we
in the US National Academies work to promote the role of science in policy making. I
welcome these mutual benefits and look forward to the development of new partnerships
throughout the continent of Africa.
Harvey V. Fineberg
President, US Institute of Medicine
