Northern Uganda Cricket Project 2012
29 th June – 16 th July
Project Report
Project Partners
UK Sport and Africa Cricket Association with key players Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) and
Cricket Without Boundaries (CWB)
Overview
African Cricket Association and UK Sport partnered in a three year (2012-2015) agreement to
support the development of cricket, incorporating the use of sport as a tool for community cohesion
for young people aged 6-19 years old, in Northern Uganda.
The project implementation by UCA started with the delivery of Introductory Cricket Coaching
Courses and distribution of cricket equipment to three pilot project areas – Lira, Gulu and Arua in
the region.
Delivery
UCA selected five primary and three secondary schools in each of the three pilot areas in the region
which are Lira, Gulu & Arua totalling fifteen and nine primary and secondary schools respectively.
Each school selected four teachers, totaling ninety teachers who were introduced to cricket coaching
by tutors, Richard Davies and Lee Booth from CWB (partners with UCA for the over six years
now) assisted by newly appointed Regional Development Officer Grace Mutyagaba.
Many of the teachers did not have knowledge of the game, but during the five days of the course in
each of the towns, they were given introductory sessions with equipment familiarisation through
group games of batting, bowling and fielding with minimal coaching instructions and the structure
of coaching sessions.
On the last day of each the coaching courses, the coaches brought groups of their own school
children with where the tutors observed their organisation skills while delivering their coaching
sessions.
The course participants were all facilitated with transport, meals, refreshments and each of them
received a certificate and T-shirt.
Generally, participants in terms of players and coaches were brought on board, while the local
government at district level was entirely involved in the project.

Observations by Course Tutors
The enthusiasm of many of the coaches and pupils was high as they were introduced to a new sport.
The coaches were observed to be quick learners and eager to demonstrate their skills and techniques
competitively.
The delivery of sessions by the teachers was more like classroom style with long explanations and
demonstrations leading to long inactivity of participants.
Way forward
UCA shall ensure that the Regional Development Officer is in constant touch with the schools and
ensure that they exposed to more cricket through cricket DVDs so as to understand the skills of the
game.
UCA shall also support the schools with more equipment regularly to support the increased
numbers in schools and easy delivery of coaching sessions.
UCA shall constantly keep in touch with schools through sending national team players as models
to motivate the young cricketers.
