As IPv6 networks become more common, it will be important to address the unique needs of IPv6 investigations in formal academic research.
IMPACT OF IPV6 TRANSITION MECHANISMS ON THE NETWORK FORENSIC 70 Chapter 3 – Methodology This study employed the qualitative method based on the active research (AR) methodology defined by Baskerville (1999). Additionally, the process consultation form was selected that utilized a reflective process model, fluid structure, and expert involvement to develop scientific knowledge within the IPv6 discipline (Baskerville, 1999, p. 10). The AR methodology complemented the interpretivist epistemology of the researcher and provided an effective framework to study complex transitional networks where little prior research has be conducted. Characteristics of Action Research Action research methods advance the perspective that complex information systems can only be understood as an entire system and the best research studies observe the effects of the changes within a system (Baskerville, 1999, pp. 3-4). IPv6 transition networks are affected by a variety of hardware and software systems; therefore, AR provided a useful framework for addressing the core research problem in the study. Action research includes the researcher as an active participant in the process and involves an interaction between the participants in the study and the client system (Byrne, 2005, p. 10; Järvinen, 2007, pp. 1,15; Susman & Evered, 1978, pp. 1,8). It allows the researcher to experiment with different theories applied to real situations (Avison, Lau, Myers, & Nielsen, 1999, p. 2; Susman & Evered, 1978, p. 18). This approach produced actionable and useful results for forensic investigators and analysts in the field because the participatory process utilized the expertise of the researcher to address the root cause of the research problem. Action research is problem centric; designed to holistically create knowledge to guide future practices; and involves action, data creation, analysis, and modification in an evolving research process (Baskerville, 1999, p. 9; Järvinen, 2007, p. 15; Susman & Evered,
