Master inventor and loyal alumnus<br />

Doug Hall ’81 received <strong>the</strong> <strong>Alumni</strong><br />

Association’s prestigious Black Bear<br />

Award during a ceremony at Homecoming<br />

2011. The award is given for outstanding<br />

service to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maine</strong>.<br />

Doug played an important role in Great<br />

Aspirations, a program associated with<br />

U<strong>Maine</strong>’s National Center for Student Aspirations.<br />

He has also served as an <strong>Alumni</strong><br />

Ambassador, and has been <strong>the</strong> featured<br />

speaker at convocation and commencement.<br />

Throughout his highly successful<br />

career, he has never failed to express his<br />

enthusiasm and appreciation for his alma<br />

mater.<br />

Most recently, he helped launch a new<br />

program in innovation engineering on<br />

campus with <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> helping <strong>Maine</strong><br />

become <strong>the</strong> nation’s leader for innovationdriven<br />

economic development. Beginning<br />

with guest lectures and presentations at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Center, his commitment grew steadily.<br />

He took a sabbatical from his business to<br />

teach three courses in innovation engineering.<br />

His leadership and experience have<br />

benefited students and <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, and<br />

recently he made a 10-year commitment<br />

to work with students, faculty, and businesses<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Center, without a salary or<br />

any cost to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
