General James Jones, a retired<br />
U.S. Marine Corps general<br />
and President Barack Obama’s<br />
first national security adviser,<br />
gave <strong>the</strong> William S. Cohen Lecture at <strong>the</strong><br />
Collins Center for <strong>the</strong> Arts on November<br />
17, 2011. General Jones discussed how <strong>the</strong><br />
security <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States could s<strong>of</strong>ten<br />
or streng<strong>the</strong>n based on <strong>the</strong> outcome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Arab Spring — <strong>the</strong> string <strong>of</strong> revolts and<br />
uprisings by <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East<br />
against <strong>the</strong>ir longstanding leaders. “The<br />
epicenter <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world’s major<br />
difficulties, whe<strong>the</strong>r you’re talking about<br />
Iraq or Afghanistan or Pakistan, all <strong>the</strong><br />
way to west Africa … is still in <strong>the</strong> Middle<br />
East,” Jones said. After his lecture,<br />
General Jones participated in a discussion<br />
with former U.S. Senator and Secretary <strong>of</strong><br />
Defense William S. Cohen ‘75 Hon.<br />
L.L.D., who developed <strong>the</strong> lecture series.<br />
The two men answered questions concentrating<br />
mostly on <strong>the</strong> withdrawal <strong>of</strong><br />
troops from <strong>the</strong> Middle East by <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> year as well as <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iraqi<br />
nation. The two also discussed <strong>the</strong><br />
suggestion <strong>of</strong> Rep. Ron Paul <strong>of</strong> Texas to<br />
withdraw troops from various military<br />
bases in Germany, Japan, and Korea as a<br />
way to cut down on <strong>the</strong> nation’s expenses.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lecture at <strong>the</strong><br />
Collins Center, <strong>the</strong> speakers and guests<br />
attended a reception at <strong>the</strong> Buchanan<br />
