Luke’s Sermon on the Way
(Lk 9:51-18:14)
Analysis and Restoration
14 Nov 2013
ANALYSIS
The Sermon is everything between the point after which Luke leaves the Markan outline (Lk 9:50, the salt saying, ~ Mk 9:50)
and the point at which it resumes that outline (Lk 18:15, bringing infants, ~ Mk 10:13). When passages with Mt > Lk
directionality are removed, this turns out to be a long but consecutive discourse on how to maintain faith amid delays of the
Return and interim persecutions. The duty to testify is emphasized, and so are the consequent dangers, but these sections
alternate with words of encouragement. Sections are frequently but not invariably made up of 3 or 3 + 1 elements. In this
outline, Luke A passages are at left; Luke B at first indent; the few Luke C addenda at second indent. All Lk > Mt passages
are noted in the right margin, as are the 4 passages borrowed back from Mt new material in the Sermon on the Mount (SM).
