Dedmon Center/Radford, Va.
UNC Asheville Travels to Top-Seeded Radford for Semifinal Clash: The UNC
Asheville Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament
for the third straight year with a 76-68 victory over fifth-seeded Winthrop Tuesday night
at Justice Center. The Bulldogs led from start to finish and ended a three-game losing
streak to the Eagles. UNC Asheville will now take on top-seeded Radford Thursday night
at the Dedmon Center. The Bulldogs lost two close meetings to the Highlanders this
season as they fell in overtime on Jan. 10, 98-88 and dropped a heartbreaking 66-65
home decision on Feb. 14.
Last Game: Reid Augst scored 27 points to lead UNC Asheville to a 76-68 win over
Winthrop Tuesday night at Justice Center in the quarterfinals of the Big South
Conference Tournament. Augst was 9-of-15 from the field, 7-of-10 from the free throw
line and grabbed six rebounds to help UNC Asheville snap a three-game losing streak to
Winthrop dating back to last season. Sean Smith added 15 points for the home team,
while Matt Dickey added 12 points. John Williams came close to a double-double with
nine points and 10 rebounds. The Eagles were led by freshman Andre Jones with 18
points. Charles Corbin came off the bench and scored 15 points and collected 10
rebounds. Mantoris Robinson finished with 14 points, while Byron Faison chipped in
13 points. The Bulldogs took control of the game quickly as they scored the first 14
points of the game, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first six minutes. Augst had eight
points in the early run that stopped when Jones knocked down a trey. The Bulldogs shot
55 percent (16-of-29) from the field in the first half and led 45-32 at halftime. In the
second half, Asheville pushed the lead to 17 at 62-45 on a jumper from Dickey with
11:28 left. Winthrop went on a 15-3 run to claw its way back in the game as Jones
knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to 67-63 at the 5:42 mark. The Bulldogs got
the lead back to eight at 71-63 on four free throws before the Eagles made one more push
and closed to 71-66 on a Corbin trey at the 1:53 mark. Winthrop had a chance to get
closer but Corbin missed the front end of a one-and-one at the 58-second mark. Asheville
got a free throw from J.P. Primm to make it 72-66 before Corbin scored on a rebound
bucket to narrow the lead to 72-68 with seven seconds left. The Bulldogs sealed the
victory by making four straight free throws in the final seven seconds to end a two-game
losing streak to Winthrop in Big South Tournament play.

UNC Asheville on the Road in the Big South Tournament: The Bulldogs have had
some success over the years on the road in Big South Tournament play. UNC Asheville
has a 4-5 record in enemy territory in Big South Tournament play. The Bulldogs are 4-3
on the road under head coach Eddie Biedenbach and have posted at least one road win in
three of the last four tournaments that Asheville has played at least one game on the road.
Another Semifinal Appearance for the Bulldogs Under Biedenbach: UNC Asheville
is in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament for the 10 th time in the last
14 years and ninth time in the last 13 years under head coach Eddie Biedenbach. This is
the third straight year the Bulldogs have made the semifinals, and the Bulldog program is
the only one in the Big South Conference that can make that claim. Biedenbach is 13-11
in Big South Tournament games. He has the second most tournament wins in league
history behind only Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall at 19-2. The only two losses
suffered by Marshall in league tournament play came to Biedenbach-coached teams in
2003 and 2004.
Not Bad for A Team Picked Ninth: UNC Asheville has enjoyed a remarkable season
considering where the Bulldogs were picked to finish in preseason polls. Asheville was
picked ninth in the Big South preseason poll but the Bulldogs surprised everyone with a
solid fourth-place finish and berth in the semifinals of league tournament. It marks the
second straight year UNC Asheville has surprised the experts so dramatically. The
Bulldogs were a preseason pick to finish in fifth place in 2007-08 but finished in a tie for
first with Winthrop and won the regular-season crown with two wins over the Eagles.
Bulldogs as the Fourth Seed in the Big South Tournament: This is just the third time
that UNC Asheville has been the #4 seed in the Big South Tournament. The Bulldogs are
hoping for similar results from the previous two times. UNC Asheville was the #4 seed
20 years ago and captured the 1989 Big South championship with three wins at the
Winthrop Coliseum, including upset wins over top-seeded Coastal Carolina and secondseeded
Campbell. In 2000, the Bulldogs were the #4 seed in the tournament that was held
at the Asheville Civic Center. The Dogs got to the championship game that year with an
upset win over top-seeded Radford before falling to second-seeded Winthrop in the title
games. The Bulldogs are 6-1 as the #4 seed all-time after Tuesday’s 76-68 quarterfinal
victory over Winthrop.
Last Time: Amir Johnson scored with 1.5 seconds left to lift Big South-leader Radford
to a 66-65 Big South Conference victory over homestanding UNC Asheville on Feb. 14.
The Highlanders trailed 39-31 at halftime but rallied to win their sixth straight game. The
Bulldogs had a three-game winning streak snapped with the heartbreaking loss. UNC
Asheville led for most of the game but could not put the visitors away. The Bulldogs
were led by freshman guard J.P. Primm with 17 points. John Williams added 16
points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Sean Smith had 14 points and seven
rebounds. Reid Augst contributed 11 points. Radford was led by Artisom Parakhouski
with a double-double as he scored 15 points and collected 14 rebounds. He also blocked
four shots. Kenny Thomas and Joey Lynch-Flohr had 14 points each. Johnson added 12
points and a game-high seven assists. Lynch-Flohr scored on a lay-up to give Radford a
62-61 lead at the 1:21 mark. It was the Highlanders first lead since early in the game. The
Bulldogs came back and took the lead when Augst scored on a driving lay-up with 58
seconds left to put Asheville in front 63-62. RU missed a three-point from Johnson but
Thomas got the rebound and scored when Williams was called for goal-tending at the 22-
second mark. The Bulldogs got the ball to Smith, who scored on a driving lay-up and was
fouled with 7.3 seconds left. Asheville led 65-54. Smith missed the free throw and
Johnson came down with the rebound. He got the ball to Johnson who quickly drove
down the floor and hit a lay-up at the 1.5 second mark to give the Highlanders the lead
and the win.
The First Meeting: Matt Dickey went coast-to-coast for the game-tying basket at the
end of regulation. However, Radford outscored UNC Asheville 17-7 in overtime to pull
out a 98-88 Big South Conference win on Jan. 10 at Peters Hall. The Bulldogs trailed by
five with 24 seconds left in the second half but rallied to tie the game at 81-81. Dickey
scored on a lay-up as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime. In the extra
session, each team hit four free throws to tie the game at 85-85. The Highlanders limited
the Bulldogs to just three points the rest of overtime to have their three-game winning
streak snapped. Reid Augst led UNC Asheville with 27 points, while Sean Smith added
18 points. Freshman guard Chris Stephenson finished with a career-high 14 points.
Radford won its fourth straight game. Joey Lynch-Flour led the Highlanders with 22
points. Amir Johnson added 18 points and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line in
overtime. Kenny Thomas and Artsiom Parakhowski contributed 15 points each.
Radford never trailed in the game, out-rebounded Asheville 45-32, and used a big
advantage at the foul line. The Highlanders were 32-of-43 from the line, while the
Bulldogs were 17-of-22. Asheville played its second straight game without leading
rebounder and second leading scorer John Williams. The sophomore forward missed the
game with an illness. The Highlanders dominated inside in the first half to race to a 44-35
halftime lead. RU outscored the Bulldogs 24-4 in the paint. The home team shot 62
percent (16-of-26) from the field and went 9-of-11 from the charity stripe to build its
nine-point lead. Asheville stayed in the game with red-hot three-point shooting. The
Bulldogs went 7-of-12 from beyond the arc. Smith led the way with 11 first half points,
nine points coming on three 3-pointers.
February Was Good to the Bulldogs: The second month of the year has been very good
to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs this year. Asheville went 4-5 in January and entered
February with four losses in five games. The Bulldogs began to turn things around on
Feb. 2 when they upset VMI on the road in overtime, 103-95. Asheville finished 5-2 in
the month of February.
The Bulldogs Against Radford in the Big South Tournament: This is the ninth time
that UNC Asheville and Radford have squared off in the Big South Tournament with the
Bulldogs holding a 5-3 advantage. Each team has had memorable moments against each
other in tournament play. The most heartbreaking defeat in the history of the UNC
Asheville program came on Feb. 28, 1998 when the Highlanders slipped past the
Bulldogs 63-61 in the league championship game at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va.
Asheville led by 17 in the first half only to fall on a shot at the buzzer by Kevin
Robinson. The Bulldogs earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament on March 8,
2003 when Asheville roared past the Highlanders 85-71 in the league championship game
at Liberty. Radford was coached by UNC Asheville graduate Byron Samuels in that game
and his top assistant was another former Bulldog in Kevin Martin. The first ever
meeting between the teams in tournament play cane in the inaugural Big South
Tournament held in Savannah, Ga. in 1986. The Bulldogs edged the Highlanders 64-62 in
the quarterfinals. This is the fourth time Asheville and Radford have played in the
semifinals with the Bulldogs holding a 2-1 advantage.
Radford Ended Winning Streaks This Year for Bulldogs: UNC Asheville enjoyed
three different three-game winning streaks this season but Radford ended two of them.
The Bulldogs won their first three games of the year before being walloped at Campbell
94-57 on Nov. 22. In January, Asheville has put together a three-game winning streak
before dropping a 98-88 overtime decision to Radford at Peters Hall on Jan. 10. The
Bulldogs put together another three-game winning streak in February but again the
Highlanders ended the streak with a 66-65 win at Justice Center on Feb. 14.
Overtime is Winning Time: Three of UNC Asheville’s last six wins have come in
overtime. The Bulldogs won at VMI on Feb. 2 (103-95), downed Gardner-Webb on Feb.
11 (87-78) and edged High Point Wednesday night, 81-78. UNC Asheville has played
some pretty exciting basketball this year. Six of the Bulldogs last 10 games have come
down to the final minute of play in regulation. Asheville is 3-1 in overtime this season.
All four of the Dogs overtime games have come in league play and that’s the most OT
league games Asheville has ever played. The last time the Bulldogs played this many
overtime games came in the 2002-03 season when Asheville played five OT contests and
went 5-0. The only loss for the Bulldogs in overtime this year came at Big South-leader
Radford, 98-88 on Jan. 10.
Road Warriors in League Play: The Bulldogs have been a decent road team in Big
South Conference play over the past two years. UNC Asheville is 11-9 in its last 20 Big
South Conference road games dating back to the end of the 2006-07 season.
The Guns of Augst: Senior forward Reid Augst has enjoyed a remarkable season this
year. Augst finished the regular season as Asheville’s leading scorer with a 15.5 mark
and is scored an average of 16.6 points per game in league play. He has scored in double
figures 23 times this year and scored at least 20 points nine different times. Augst became
the 24 th player in school history to score 1,000 career points when he sank a three-pointer
against Charleston Southern on Feb. 7. Not bad for a guy who only scored 99 points his
freshman year. He now has 1,108 career points and that’s good for 22 rd place on the
school’s all-time career list. Augst has been doing more than just scoring this season. He
is Asheville’s second best rebounder with a 4.8 average. Augst leads the team in steals
with 49 and is second in assists with 76. On Monday, he was named to the Big South
All-Conference second team.
Great Music from John Williams: Sophomore forward John Williams has been just
tremendous for the Bulldogs this year but he has especially elevated his game the past
few weeks. Williams has scored in double figures in six of the last eight games and three
of those contests have seen him record three double-doubles. His game against High
Point was amazing as he scored a career-best 32 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked
five shots. He is averaging 18.5 points per game over those eight contests. John tops the
club in blocked shots with 70. Williams has a career total of 121 swats, good for sixth
place on the school’s all-time list. In addition, he led the Big South in field goal shooting
in Big South Conference games at 60 percent (87-of-145). John has become a pretty good
free throw shooter, as well. After struggling at 43 percent last year, Williams has
improved to 64.5 percent (89-of-138) this season. He went 10-of-14 at High Point and 6-
of-8 in overtime to help get the win.
Everyone in Double Figures in League Play: UNC Asheville has enjoyed balanced
scoring all year long and one look at the stat sheet shows that, especially in league play.
The Bulldogs finished the regular season with five players averaging double-figures in
scoring during BSC games. Reid Augst tops the Dogs with a 16.6 average. John
Williams is next with a 14.4 mark, followed by Matt Dickey (12.7), Sean Smith (11.7)
and J.P. Primm (10.1).
Assist From J.P.: Freshman guard J.P. Primm has done a nice job for the Bulldogs both
starting and coming off the bench this year. He leads Asheville in assists with 134 and
that’s the most assists for a Bulldog freshman since Josh Kohn had 141 in the 1992-93
season. Primm had 13 against VMI, the second most in school history on Dec. 6.
A First in School History: UNC Asheville had four players score more 20 points in the
Bulldogs win at VMI on Feb. 2. Asheville was led by Reid Augst with 23 points, while
Matt Dickey and Sean Smith scored 22 points each. John Williams finished with 21
points. That’s the first time in school history that the Bulldogs have had four players
score 20 points or more in a game.
First Thursday Game of the Year: Tonight’s game marks the first time this year the
Bulldogs have played on a Thursday. UNC Asheville went 2-0 in Thursday games last
year.
Mighty Matt: Freshman guard Matt Dickey has really played well for the Bulldogs
recently and has moved into the starting line-up the past 10 games. He has scored in
double figures in 13 of the last 16 games, including 23 points at Winthrop on Jan. 17, 22
vs. VMI on Jan. 28 and 21 against Coastal Carolina last Saturday. The rookie is
averaging 14 points per game in his last 15 games. Dickey is now Asheville’s third
leading scorer with a 10.8 average and that average jumps to 12.7 in league play. Matt
leads the Bulldogs in free throw percentage at 81.9 percent (68-of-83). The Alabama
native was honored for his play by being named to the Big South All-Rookie team on
Monday. Dickey helped lead the Bulldogs to the win against Winthrop on Tuesday with
12 points and six rebounds.
Great Games From Sean: Junior guard Sean Smith had a game to remember at Liberty
on Jan. 31. Smith scored a career-high 28 points and tied a school record and Vines
Center record with eight 3-pointers made in the game. Smith was 10-of-16 from the field
and 8-of-12 from beyond the arc. He followed that up with his first career double-double
at VMI (2-2) when he scored 22 points and collected 11 rebounds. The Stockholm,
Sweden native has scored in double figures in eight of the last 10 games, averaging 14.5
points per game during this stretch. Sean has raised his scoring average to 10.4 points per
game and 11.7 in league games. Smith leads the Bulldogs in three-pointers made with 70
and now has 128 for his career, moving him into sixth place on the school’s all-time
career list past Bryan McCullough (125). Sean has seemed to save some of his best play
against teams from the state of Virginia. In six games against league teams from Virginia,
Smith is averaging 19.3 points per game, shooting 51 percent (39-of-77) from the field
and 55 percent (29-of-53) from the three-point line.
Three-Point Record Set vs. VMI: The Bulldogs set a new school record against VMI
for most three-pointers made. Asheville went 16-of-28 from long distance against the
Keydets, breaking the previous record of 14 against Winthrop set back in the 1992-93
season.
Maybe the Youngest Team in the Nation: UNC Asheville may have the youngest roster
in college basketball. There are now 14 players on the Bulldog roster with 11 of those
players either freshmen or sophomores. Eight Bulldogs are freshmen, while three players
are sophomores. Asheville has just one senior returning and that’s the lone starter back
from a year ago is Reid Augst. The three juniors on the roster have only one player with
any true playing experience in Sean Smith. The other two juniors – Jason Ridenhour &
Matt Kittrell – have limited experience. Ridenhour is a walk-on who has started this
year. Kittrell is a transfer who due to injuries did not play this year.
Two Top-Ranked Teams This Year: UNC Asheville played its usual demanding nonconference
schedule this year. This year has had the Bulldogs playing two teams that
were ranked #1 in the country. Asheville played at North Carolina on Nov. 30 and fell
116-48. The Tar Heels were ranked first at the time. On Dec. 17, Asheville played at
Duke and lost 99-56. The Blue Devils were ranked “only” eighth at the time but made it
to the top spot earlier last month. In addition, the Bulldogs played Tennessee and Ohio
State when both of those teams were ranked in the Top 25. Ohio State was unbeaten
when Asheville faced them.
Rallying Bulldogs at Home: UNC Asheville has made fans stay to the end in its home
games this year. In five of its last seven home wins, the Bulldogs trailed by significant
margins in each game but have rallied for wins. On Dec. 31, Asheville trailed Western
Carolina 41-31 at halftime but roared back to win 81-78. On Jan. 13 against High Point,
the Bulldogs trailed 55-48 with less than four minutes remaining but out-scored the
Panthers 13-4 to pull out the victory. On Jan. 24 vs. Presbyterian, Asheville trailed 53-46
with less than eight minutes remaining but out-scored the Blue Hose 22-5 to win the
game. This past Saturday against Charleston Southern, the Bulldogs trailed by 12 in the
first half before rallying to take a 30-28 halftime lead and win going away, 80-71.
Asheville trailed by 13 (22-9) in the first half on Feb. 11 vs. Gardner-Webb but rallied to
win, 87-78 in overtime.
Two Straight Weeks of Freshman of the Week: UNC Asheville had two freshmen earn
Freshman of the Week honors in January. Chris Stephenson was named Freshman of the
Week on Jan. 12 and Matt Dickey earned the same honor on Jan. 19. Stephenson became
first UNC Asheville freshman to be honored by the league since Donovan Jones picked
up the award in January of 2007. The Bulldogs haven’t had back-to-back Freshman of the
Week honors since Andre Smith won it three weeks in a row in February, 2000.
How About That Three-Point Defense!!!: One of the Bulldogs weakness this year has
been their three-point defense. UNC Asheville has been last in the league in that category
from the start of the year and remains there as opponents have shot 34.9 percent against
the Bulldogs from beyond the arc this season. Nine different opponents have made at
least 10 treys against Asheville during the year. However, the Bulldogs have improved in
that category in league play. Asheville finished third in three-point defense in BSC games
at 32.6 percent. The Bulldogs have not allowed an opponent to make more than seven
treys in the last six of the last seven games and four of the last five opponents have shot
less than 23 percent from downtown.
Who Needs Rebounding?: UNC Asheville has been out-rebounded in 13 of its last 16
games but amazingly has went 6-7 in those games that it was out-rebounded. One of the
games they did out-rebound their opponent came in a big way when they out-rebounded
VMI 51-29 on Feb. 2 en route to a 103-95 overtime victory. Asheville finally won
another rebound battle Tuesday night against Winthrop by a 37-36 count.
Eddie Gets Win #105 in Big South Play: UNC Asheville head coach Eddie
Biedenbach became the second coach in Big South history to record 105 wins in league
play when the Bulldogs defeated High Point on Feb. 18, 81-78. He moved past former
Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall (104) into second place in the league’s all-time list. He
should move past former Radford head coach Ron Bradley for first place early in league
play next season.
Big South Conference Coaching Victories
1. Ron Bradley (Radford) 109-47
2. Eddie Biedenbach (UNC Asheville) 106-79
3. Gregg Marshall (Winthrop) 104-24
Eddie Gets His 200th: UNC Asheville head basketball coach Eddie Biedenbach picked
up his 200 th career victory against Western Carolina on New Year’s Eve. Eddie has
picked up 181 of those victories as head coach at UNC Asheville and 29 were earned at
Davidson from 1979-81. He has led the Bulldog program to four Big South Conference
regular-season titles, one trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and one trip to the NIT
in 2008. Biedenbach is the only coach in Big South history to take a team to both the
NCAA and NIT post-season tournaments. Here are Eddie’s milestone wins:
Win #1: Davidson 106, Canisius 99 – Nov. 24, 1978
Win #50: UNC Asheville 84, ETSU 61 – Dec. 2, 1997
Win #100: UNC Asheville 70, Elon 57 – Feb. 18, 2001
Win #150: UNC Asheville 68, Birmingham-Southern 59 – Feb. 14, 2005
Win #200: UNC Asheville 81, Western Carolina 78 – Dec. 31, 2008
Win #210: UNC Asheville 76, Winthrop 68 – March 3, 2009
Halftime Leads Have Been Safe The Past Two Years, Except Against Radford: The
Bulldogs did a great job holding on to halftime leads last season. Asheville went 18-1 a
year ago when it led at halftime. The lone defeat was the nightmarish shooting night at
Radford on Feb. 20, 2008. Asheville led 35-31 at halftime but then shot a mind-boggling
14 percent in the second half as the Highlanders rallied past the Dogs, 62-53. The
Bulldogs are now 10-1 this year when leading at halftime after falling to Radford on Feb.
14. Asheville led 39-31 at intermission. The Bulldogs have won 26 of their last 28 games
when ahead at halftime. Take away Radford and Asheville is a perfect 65-0 when leading
at halftime over the past two years.
Action Jackson: Freshman forward Quinard Jackson hasn’t played much this year but
has shown flashes throughout the season. He gave the Bulldogs a huge lift off the bench
on Saturday when Jackson grabbed a career-best nine rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
Jackson really sparked Asheville in the first half with seven rebounds.
Eddie’s Assistants Have Done Well: UNC Asheville head coach Eddie Biedenbach has
had some good assistants during his coaching career at Davidson and UNC Asheville.
Biedenbach was the head man at Davidson for three years from 1978-81. He had a pretty
good staff when he was there as current Texas head coach Rick Barnes was there along
with current Davidson head coach Bob McKillop and Jeff Bzdelik, now the head coach
at Colorado. While at UNC Asheville, he had Monte Towe on his staff for three years.
Towe is now the Associate Head Coach at N.C. State after a solid head coaching career at
the University of New Orleans. Thomas Nash served at UNC Asheville for seven years
as an assistant coach before last spring moving to Mars Hill to become the Lions head
coach. Mars Hill is having a good season under Nash and has a 15-7 record.
UNC Asheville in League Lid-Lifters Under Eddie: UNC Asheville has always been
ready for league play since Eddie Biedenbach became the Bulldogs head coach.
Asheville is now 12-1 in the opening game of Big South Conference play since the 1996-
97 season when Biedenbach became the Bulldogs head coach. The Dogs played Liberty
on Nov. 18 and that game was the earliest ever Big South Conference opener for UNC
Asheville but once again Biedenbach has the Bulldogs ready to play as they won, 84-56.
UNC Asheville Gets Third Straight Season-Opening Win: The Bulldogs won their
opening game for the third straight year on Friday night. Previous to defeating Montreat
87-72 in the lid-lifter of the 2006-07 year, UNC Asheville had lost 10 straight season
openers. However, the Bulldogs played some pretty good opponents during that time.
Eddie Biedenbach’s club lost to East Tennessee State, Syracuse, Purdue, Missouri,
Campbell, West Virginia, Michigan State, N.C. State, Texas Tech and Georgia Tech in
opening games before beating Montreat two years ago. The Bulldogs won last year’s
opening tilt by holding off Furman, 79-76.
