The University
The University of North Carolina Wilmington boasts of undergraduate learning
opportunities second to none and professors whose commitment to knowledge is surpassed
only by their dedication to students. It offers effective learning environments
that integrate teaching and mentoring with research and service at a level that rivals
exclusive research institutions of similar size.
Students consistently praise the quality of their interactions with faculty and
express a high degree of satisfaction with their overall educational experience. The
faculty culture emphasizes teaching and mentoring, incorporating research as an
important component of the undergraduate learning experience and an opportunity
to have an impact on the state’s most pressing issues. International experiences
are encouraged through study abroad programs and language and culture studies
on campus.
Recognized in recent years by several national publications
as a top public undergraduate institution, UNCW continues its pursuit to soar to even greater
heights.
“The UNCW of today is a fantastic university,” said Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo.
“The momentum that propels us to soar higher derives from our students’ achievements, faculty
and staff accomplishments and strong support from alumni, friends, trustees, volunteer
board members and other donors.”
For 10 consecutive years UNCW
has ranked in the top 10 of the best
public regional universities in the
South by U.S. News & World Report.
For the fifth consecutive year,
UNCW received the “Best in the
Southeast” designation by The
Princeton Review. It is one of only
four North Carolina public universities
included in Peterson’s
Competitive Colleges 2008: Top
Colleges for Top Students.
Established as Wilmington College in 1947, the university is made up of the College of Arts and Sciences,
the Cameron School of Business, the School of Nursing, the Watson School of Education and the Graduate School. UNC
Wilmington offers 73 bachelor’s degrees and 25 master’s degrees, a Ph.D. in marine biology and an Ed.D. in educational leadership
and administration.
Degree programs in the School of Nursing, Watson School
of Education and Cameron School of Business are designed specifically
to serve professional workforce needs in the region. The
College of Arts and Sciences
stresses applied
learning experiences
across the liberal arts
disciplines to prepare
its students to bridge
the gap between the
classroom and the
complex problems of
21st century communities.
UNCW’s strength in the natural sciences, especially biological sciences, chemistry,
geological sciences and other disciplines that form the core of its internationally respected
niche in marine science, is the result of decades of intentional focus and investment. In
the arts and literature, UNCW’s high profile programs are film studies and creative writing.
The Department of Film Studies takes advantage of the location of UNCW in Wilmington,
N.C., the home of Screen Gems Studios, the largest full-service motion picture facility in
the United States east of California. The Master of Fine Arts in creative writing is one of the
most respected on the East Coast, cited as one of “Five Top Innovative/Unique Programs
in Creative Writing” in 2007 by Atlantic Monthly.
The university has taken a leadership role in the long-term economic, environmental,
educational, social and cultural health of the region. It has a strong commitment to adult
learners and offers short, non-credit university courses, seminars, lectures, travel excursions and other educational opportunities.
Overall, the university has an annual $500 million economic impact on the eight-county region. This represents 10 percent of total
economic activity in the seven-county region.
UNCW Administration
Rosemary DePaolo, Chancellor
Rosemary DePaolo became chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington in July 2003. Under her
visionary leadership, UNCW has attained national prominence as a model for teaching, research and service.
A highlight of her administration is an unprecedented university-wide strategic planning process which reflects the
university’s commitment to providing its students with the most powerful learning experience possible.
Under her leadership, UNCW continues to rise in academic quality. The average SAT of incoming freshmen improved
from 1104 in fall 2003 to 1157 in fall 2007, the third highest in the UNC system, behind only UNC Chapel Hill and
NC State. The 53-point increase is unprecedented among any of the UNC schools.
Now in her fifth year at UNCW, DePaolo continues to lead the university’s rise in national prominence. In the 2008
edition of America’s Best Colleges published by U.S. News & World Report, UNCW moved from seventh to the sixth
place among the best public regional master’s university in the South. Among the 119 public and private universities in
the South that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s level programs, UNCW improved its overall ranking
from 20th in 2007 to 14th in the 2008 edition.
Under DePaolo’s leadership, for the fifth consecutive year, UNCW received the “Best in the Southeast” designation
by The Princeton Review. UNCW is one of only four North Carolina public universities included in Peterson’s Competitive
Colleges 2008: Top Colleges for Top Students. This is the first year UNCW has been featured in that publication.
Throughout her time in office, Chancellor DePaolo has been an advocate for using the intellectual capital of the university to address issues of concern to
the region, particularly in furthering economic development. Under her guidance, UNCW achieved Millennial Campus designation of several sites to be used
for public/private research ventures capitalizing on the university’s strengths in marine biotechnology among others.
She is actively involved in several initiatives to improve the university’s local and regional outreach efforts, including serving as an ex-officio member of the
Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of Directors of the Foundation of Renewal for Eastern North Carolina, as chair of the Southeastern
Advisory Committee for Biotechnology of the NC Biotechnology Center, and on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the North Carolina Chamber,
the state’s largest and most influential business group. She also serves on the Executive Board of the North Carolina Campus Compact. In 2007/2008 she
chaired the local United Way Campaign with a goal of raising $2.3 million for Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover counties.
A nationally recognized humanities scholar and leader in higher education, DePaolo has served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the
Association of American Colleges and Universities, as well as the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. She also chairs the Colonial Athletic
Association’s Council of Presidents.
Before arriving in Wilmington, DePaolo was president of Georgia College & State University, the state’s designated public liberal arts university.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College of the City University of New York and a master of arts and a doctorate in 18th century English
literature from Rutgers University.
A native of Long Island, New York, DePaolo is married to Fred Wharton, a retired professor of English.
Kelly Mehrtens, Director of Athletics
Kelly Mehrtens, who compiled an impressive administrative resume at four institutions after
record-setting days as an All-American student-athlete, was named director of athletics at UNC Wilmington
on July 2, 2007.
The appointment of Mehrtens, formerly associate director of athletics and senior women’s
administrator at the University of Kansas, followed an extensive national search that attracted 300
applicants and lasted nearly 11 weeks. Mehrtens was introduced during a late-morning press conference
in the Golden Hawk Room of the William P. Nixon Jr., Annex. She began her new post on
Aug. 13, 2007.
A native of Panama City, Fla., Mehrtens spent almost four years at Kansas, where she
served as a key member of KU’s senior administrative team. She oversaw 15 men’s and women’s
sports with operating budgets totaling more than $15 million, serving as a highly-efficient manager of high
profile revenue and non-revenue sports programs.
In addition to handling numerous senior administrative duties in Lawrence, the 44-year-old Mehrtens also established a successful track
record in the fund-raising realm. She played a key role on KU’s fundraising team that has racked up $19 million in facility improvements in three years. In addition,
she helped the Jayhawks increase their annual giving in athletics from $5 million in 2003 to $12 million.
Mehrtens truly has been an advocate of the student-athlete. She developed KU’s Student-Athlete Development/Leadership Program and worked with the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to raise $1 million to help fund women’s sports facilities.
Prior to joining the staff at Kansas, Mehrtens worked in a similar capacity at the University of Illinois. She oversaw all operations for men’s basketball,
women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s track and field, women’s track and field, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s swimming and softball for the Illini. She also
administered game contracts and scheduling for men’s basketball, coordinated post-season travel for men’s and women’s basketball and performed numerous
other senior management-level duties, including the creation of a softball program and overseeing construction of a $1.7 million softball facility in Champaign.
From 1989-92, Mehrtens worked as assistant athletic director for business and senior women’s administrator at the University of Miami. She managed
the program’s $20 million budget and was responsible for financial planning and budgets for all of the Hurricane programs.
Prior to her stint in Coral Gables, Mehrtens served as special assistant to the director at Northeastern’s University Center for the Study of Sport In Society
and as Assistant Athletic Director for Business in NU’s women’s athletics department.
Mehrtens also spent two years as executive director of S.M.A.R.T. Sports, Inc., a community-based partnership program to provide mentoring for youth
in Miami, Fla., between the Miami and Illinois appointments.
As a student-athlete, Mehrtens enjoyed a successful collegiate career at the University of Alabama. She threw the discus on the women’s track team,
collecting All-American honors in 1985 and making the World University Games and Pan American Teams in 1987. She finished fourth in the 1992 U.S. Olympic
Trials. Mehrtens earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce and Business Administration from Alabama in 1986 and completed her Master’s Degree
in Education from Illinois in 2001.
Mehrtens has been very active on the CAA and NCAA fronts. She serves on the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council and on the Big 12
Strategic Plan Review Committee and Championships and Awards Committee. She was the Big 12 Administrator’s Council Co-Chair in 2006-07.
Mehrtens has been married to Nicholas Mehrtens III for three years and has two stepdaughters; Marina, 14, and Kayla, 8.
Jim Sprecher
Head Coach
13th Season
Ball State, 1985
Jim Sprecher, the most successful
cross country/track and
field coach in UNC Wilmington
history, has established the
UNCW program as one of the
CAA’s best as he enters his 13th
season in 2008-09.
Sprecher, 45, guided the
Seahawks to three consecutive
Colonial Athletic Association
men’s track and field championships
from 1997-99 before
accepting the top post at his
alma mater, Ball State.
He returned to UNCW
in 2004 and has picked up
where he left off, leading
the Seahawks to titles once
again in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
The Seahawks captured their ninth overall men’s
championship last spring in dramatic fashion, taking the 4x400
Relay and rallying for the win. Ten Seahawks won CAA championships,
18 were named All-East and nine qualified for the NCAA
Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla.
2007-08 was a special year for the program in addition to winning
the CAA Championship. A pair of alums were honored when
Michael McDuffie was inducted into the UNCW Hall-of-Fame and
Anna Raynor competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials.
UNCW won its first of two straight CAA titles in 2007. On the
men’s side, the Seahawks produced six CAA champions and 22
All-CAA performers. Sprecher’s club then posted a best-ever fifth
place finish at the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J., qualifying
seven performers for the NCAA Regionals in Gainesville, Fla.
The women’s squad, meanwhile, continues to make progress
as well, highlighted by the emergence of thrower Anna Raynor.
The remarkable athlete successfully defended her Championship
of Americas title in the javelin at the Penn Relays and qualified for
the NCAA Championships for the third straight year.
Overall, the women’s team featured five All-CAA performers,
17 qualifiers for the ECAC Championships and five qualifiers for
the NCAA Regionals.
In 2004-05, Sprecher led the Seahawks to their seventh CAA
crown with a school-record 218.5 points. He was named CAA
Coach-of-the-Year for the fourth time after collecting the honor in
1997, 1998 and 1999.
Following a brief stint at Ball State, Sprecher came back to the
Port City and began rebuilding the program. In 2004-05, UNCW
featured 12 conference champions, 41 All-CAA performers, 25
NCAA East Regional qualifiers and set 23 school records.
The 2004-05 campaign also saw the emergence of one of the
top athletes in the program’s history as Raynor grabbed the national
spotlight. Raynor became the school’s first national qualifier
for the indoor nationals in the high jump and then collected All-
American honors in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field
Championships in
Sacramento, Calif.
S p r e c h e r
headed up the
UNCW program
from 1992-99 before
leaving for
Muncie. In seven
seasons, he led
the Seahawks to
three CAA titles,
coached 37 individual
conference
champions and
173 All-CAA performers.
In that
span, Seahawk
thinclads earned
All-East honors
49 times and
won Penn Relays
events five
times, four in relay
events and one individual crown. He also coached two NCAA
Division I national qualifiers and one Academic All-American.
Sprecher was named CAA Men’s Track & Field Coach-of-the-
Year in 1997 and 1998, and shared the honor with James Madison’s
Bill Walton
in 1999. In
Coaching Staff
Bob Berke
Assistant Coach
Bob Berke enters his tenth year as an assistant
track coach at UNCW. Berke specializes in
coaching the pole vaulters. In his nine seasons,
the men and women Seahawk vaulters have won
seven conference championships. He coached the
first IC4A track champion for UNCW. Last season,
Colton Weaver participated in the NCAA Eastern Regional Championships
and four vaulters competed in the prestigious Penn Relays.
Berke began pole vaulting in high school when fiberglass poles were
first introduced. He went on to play basketball for the University of Pittsburgh
where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in math in 1974 and his
Master’s in 1975. He spent the next nine years flying jets for the Navy.
In 1984, he joined USAirways and is employed as an airline captain. He
retired from the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1994.
After a 26-year hiatus from pole vaulting, Berke became involved with
the Seahawk track team. He has developed the Wilmington area into a
bastion of pole vaulting. The track team has successfully recruited state
high school pole vault champions from North Carolina and surrounding
states.
Berke is a USATF Level II jumps coach and has been instrumental in
building UNCW’s vaulting facilities into the finest in the state. He organized
the Wrightsville Beach Vault for five years. In addition, through USATF, he
founded the Wilmington Vault Club. Berke has resumed his own vaulting
career and is a USATF All-American. He trains regularly with Earl Bell, the
1984 Olympic Bronze medalist, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and is a member
of the North American Pole Vault Association, which develops Olympic
caliber vaulters. His goal is to raise UNCW to the national level in pole
vault.
Donald Thomas
Assistant Coach
Donald Thomas enters his sixth season
at UNCW after spending eight years as assistant
coach at the University of Maryland. He coordinates
the Seahawks’ recruiting and assist with
coaching the Sprinting and Jumps Events. His efforts
in recruiting have helped UNCW win Three
Colonial Athletic Association Championships.
Thomas, who coached the hurdlers and high jumpers in College
Park, also recruited Maryland’s 1999-2000 Track & Field News nationallyranked
recruiting class.
While at Maryland, Thomas coached Vanessa Jones to an Atlantic
Coast Conference Championship, an ECAC Championship and three
NCAA Championship appearances in the High Jump. In 2000, Jones
reached the finals of the High Jump at the Olympic Trials. Thomas also
trained Thema Napier to an ECAC Championship and NCAA Championship
appearance in the 400 Hurdles. In 2002, Napier reached the finals of
the USA Track & Field Championships in the 400 Hurdles.
Thomas has coached athletes that have qualified for the Olympic Trials,
USA Championships, NCAA Championships and earned All East, All
ACC and All CAA Honors. He is a USATF Level One Certified Coach.
Jeni Steiner
Assistant Coach
Jeni Steiner enters her first season with the
Seahawks after joining the staff on Aug. 21, 2008.
“Jeni is a tremendous addition to out coaching
staff,” said Sprecher. “Being a former Olympic
Trials and NCAA qualifier, she’ll be a great role
model for our student athletes.”
Steiner comes to UNCW after spending the past season as a volunteer
assistant with the storied Nebraska Track & Field program. With the
Seahawks, she’ll be working with the athletes in throw events.
Steiner, who earned All-Big 12 honors six times, was a four-year letterwinner
for the Huskers where she earned First-team Academic All-Big
12 honors her final three seasons in Lincoln. As a freshman, she earned
Second-Team Academic All-Big 12 honors. In 2007, she was named Nebraska’s
Most Improved Female Field Athlete after breaking the 52-foot
mark and advancing to the NCAA National Championships in Sacramento,
Calif. That same season, Steiner finished 16th overall at the Olympic qualifier
in Indianapolis.
Layne Schwier
Assistant Coach
Layne Schwier enters his sixth year as an
assistant coach with the Seahawks and will be responsible
for coaching the men’s and women’s distance
programs during both the cross country and
the track seasons. His squads are making strides
in the CAA in cross country and expect to make a
contribution once again this spring on the track as both teams make another
run at a CAA Championship. Distance runners under Schwier currently hold
62 spots on UNCW’s Top 10 all-time lists, with 31 of them being achieved
by current team members. In addition to improved running performance, the
squads have excelled in the classroom with the women’s team being named
an All-Academic team by the USTFCCCA for five straight years. Schwier’s
athletes have been named Academic All-American eight times.
In 2005, Marissa Murtaugh garnered All-CAA following her 11th-place
individual finish at the CAA Cross Country Championships. In 2007, Bernadette
O’Neill finished fifth in the 10k at the CAA Track & Field Championships.
For the past 5 years, Coach Schwier also was responsible for the
Seahawk throws program. Under his guidance, the Seahawks achieved 27
All-CAA performances (12 individual titles), 25 IC4A/ECAC qualifiers (7 All-
East performances and 4 Champions), 17 NCAA Regional qualifiers, and
broke 5 school records. They also qualified an athlete to the NCAA Championships
four out of those five years, including the very first for the UNCW
women’s track & field program when Christie Schreckengost qualified in the
javelin in 2004.
A highlight in Schwier’s coaching career was his role in the emergence
of Anna Raynor in the javelin. Despite having no experience in the event
before college, Raynor ended her career with the Seahawks as a threetime
All-American (11th at NCAA’s in 2005, fourth in 2006 and 2007), CAA
Champion, ECAC Champion, two-time Penn Relays Champion, as well as
the CAA and UNCW record holder in the javelin. In addition to being named
the CAA Track & Field Athlete-of-the-Year for the third consecutive year in
2007, Raynor also was named the Southeast Region Field Athlete-of-the-
Year. In the summer of 2007, Raynor finished third at the USA National
Championships. As a member of Team USA that summer, she took the
silver medal at the NACAC Senior Games in El Salvador.
Schwier graduated from Wittenberg in Springfield, Ohio, where he ran
cross country and track for four years. While at Wittenberg, he was coached
by 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist Bob Schul. He later received his masters
in Sport Biomechanics from Ball State. Schwier is a member of the UST-
FCCCA and USA Track & Field. He holds USATF Level II Certification in
Throws, Jumps, Combined Events and Endurance. He is also a USATF
Certified Level I Instructor and a regularly invited speaker at track & field
clinics.
Colonial Athletic Association
With more than two decades of success athletically and
academically, the Colonial Athletic Association has established
a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences.
The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest
metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches
from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national
team champions in five different sports, 33 individual
national champions, 12 national players of the year, 11 national
coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Even
more impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away
from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 20
NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2007-08, the CAA had five
ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans and more than
1,700 of our 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s
Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point
average while lettering in a varsity sport.
The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority
of the East Coast and includes six of the nation’s top
25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston
(7), Washington, D.C. (8), Atlanta (9) and Baltimore (24). The
number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 19.7
million.
The CAA currently sponsors 22 sports with the addition of
a 12-team football league in 2007. Male athletes compete for
championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football,
golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and
field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles
in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer,
softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and
volleyball. In 2007-08, 26 teams earned NCAA Tournament
berths and 46 student-athletes received All-America honors.
The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with at least three teams advancing to post-season play for
the past five years. Last season, conference champion George Mason earned its third NCAA Tournament trip since 2001, VCU received its
fourth post-season berth in five seasons with a spot in the NIT and Old Dominion reached the quarterfinals of the inaugural CBI for its fourth
consecutive postseason appearance.
The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship
began in 1981. Delaware and Towson have each reached
the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and at least
one men’s soccer team has advanced to the final 16 of the
NCAA Championship in five of the last six years. In baseball,
the CAA had 23 players chosen in the 2008 Major League
draft, which was the second-highest total in league history.
UNC Wilmington won its fifth regular season title and earned
its second at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where the
Seahawks reached the regional finals for the third time in four
tournament appearances. James Madison, meanwhile, captured
its first tournament title and returned to the NCAA Tournament
for the first time since 2002.
CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in
the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in
2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their
partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate
athletics. Among the programs already established are
an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study
abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries,
academic resource centers and computer labs.
Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its
current members- George Mason University, James Madison University and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina
University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years,
the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided
to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985.
Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991
and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and
Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.
the demands of their athletic Sandy Williford Rodney Young Jessica Long
and academic schedules.
Progress reports monitoring class attendance and test results and accessing tutorial needs are
completed two times each semester by professors of classes in which UNCW student-athletes
are enrolled.
The University College is designed to assist students during their academic careers, with
special emphasis on the first and second years of study when they are expected to work toward
fulfilling the basic studies requirements as outlined in the university catalog. The assistant athletic
director for academics meets with student-athletes on a regular basis to assist in their academic
success and monitor their progress toward a degree.
Each freshman is assigned to an advisor for personal assistance in selecting courses,
maintaining required scholastic records and planning a complete University College educational
program. The program’s primary objective is to assist students toward completing basic studies.
Several other programs are provided for academic support at UNCW, including the Writing/
Reading Place, the Learning Center, the Math Lab, tutorial services, Learning Disability Services,
personal and career counseling, study hall and a laptop program.
student-athletes.
CHAMPS/Life Skills Meets Student-Athlete Needs
To prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing
field, UNCW and the NCAA team up in the popular CHAMPS/Life Skills
Program. UNCW is currently one of 627 institutions involved in the popular
program.
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is designed to provide student-athletes
with the education and the experiences to assist them in bridging the
gap between college life and professional life in the work world and to
make meaningful contributions to their communities.
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program focuses on five commitment
areas viewed as critical to personal growth:
(1) Academic Excellence - to support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward
intellectual development and graduation.
(2) Athletic Excellence - to build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic
programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the studentathlete.
(3) Personal Development - to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for
the student-athlete, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making
skills.
(4) Career Development - to encourage each student-athlete to develop and pursue their
career and life goals.
(5) Service - to engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding
communities.
The NCAA has worked with its member institutions and educational consultants to
create instructional materials and program models to address the needs of today’s studentathletes.
Topics such as diversity education, developing sexual responsibility, nutrition, eating
disorder prevention and awareness, time management, community service and career
development are just some of the areas covered within the curriculum.
A freshman seminar course is designed to assist student-athletes in making the transition
to college, this seminar focuses on college-level study skills, time management, awareness
of available university services, etc. It is open only to entering freshmen and generates two
hours of elective credit toward graduation.
Wilmington: Gem of the Coast
Founded more than 250 years ago on the
Cape Fear River, Wilmington has developed
into one of the fastest growing deep-water ports
on the East Coast, combining economic potential
with an abundance of outdoor recreational
opportunities.
Wilmington has a historic legacy that begins
before the Revolutionary War and runs
through its stance as the last Atlantic port
open to blockade runners during the Civil
War. Today, the continuous restoration and
preservation in the Historic District is a tribute
to the city’s proud heritage.
Historic Wilmington affords visitors the unique opportunity
to enjoy a bustling seaport rich in shopping, dining, culture and the arts, while being only minutes away from barrier
islands, broad beaches and the intracoastal waterway.
The 200-block Historic District highlighting the downtown area opens into a scenic riverfront park that overlooks the USS North
Carolina Battleship Memorial.
A beautifully restored battleship, the USS North Carolina was considered the greatest sea weapon in the world when commissioned
in 1941. During World War II, “The Showboat” earned 15 battlestars and participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific from
Guadalcanal to Okinawa. A memorial since 1961, the battleship is dedicated to the men and women of all U.S. military services who
defended our country during WWII.
One of Wilmington’s most unique features is the city’s status as the leading entertainment production center in the Southeast. The
city’s evolution into “Hollywood East” began when Dino DeLaurentis shot Stephen King’s Firestarter in 1984.
One year later, Dino DeLaurentis constructed a studio facility in the Port City and the complex, now owned by EUE/Screen Gems,
is the largest production studio east of Hollywood, offering nine sound stages on a 32-acre site near the Wilmington International Airport.
Numerous movies, television series and commericals have been filmed in Wilmington. The popular show, “Dawson’s Creek,” was
produced in Wilmington and shot frequently on the UNCW campus as well as Warner Bros. hit “One Tree Hill.”
A film-friendly community, Wilmington residents have embraced the industry, often appearing as “extras” in movies. It’s not uncommon
for celebrities the likes of Sandra Bullock, Nick Nolte, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise and Dennis Hopper to be seen dining at a
restaurant, shopping at the mall or just simply walking along the shore.
Wrightsville Beach, just minutes away from Wilmington’s downtown area, is a year-round island resort. Wide, uncrowded beaches,
full service marinas and a variety of accommodations are complemented by excellent seafood restaurants, specialty shops and exciting
nightlife.
