Secretary, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy visits DESI Power, Bihar<br />

Renewable Energy, Government of India visited Araria<br />
and Purnia district in Bihar on June 3-4, 2010 to review<br />
four project sites where biomass gasifier based<br />
electrification projects have been initiated by<br />
Decentralized Energy System India Power (Kosi) Pvt.<br />
Ltd. (DESI Power). DESI Power had initiated activities<br />
to create local sustainable markets for decentralized<br />
electricity supply linked to job creation and<br />
development of village industries in rural Bihar. The<br />
gasifier systems for electrification have been operating<br />
for last two years on a viable business model. Under<br />
the project, electricity is provided for 6-8 hours daily<br />
for domestic lighting in the night and for 6-8 hours for<br />
other commercial applications including water<br />
pumping for irrigation purposes and to microenterprises<br />
and telecom towers.<br />

During his visit, the Secretary also had discussions with<br />
villagers; microenterprises, energy service companies,<br />
consultants, manufacturers etc associated in promotion<br />
of biomass gasifier based distributed electricity projects<br />
for rural areas. DESI Power has planned to develop such<br />
systems in about 100 villages in next 1-2 years.<br />
The Secretary also visited a rice mill at Kashba village<br />
in Purnia district, Bihar where a biomass gasifier system<br />
is being operated successfully for meeting entire<br />
electricity and thermal needs of the rice mill since last<br />
two years. He had discussions with other rice mill<br />
owners also who are planning to install such systems.<br />

<strong>Development</strong> Agency, Kolkatta, UP NEDA and Bihar<br />
Renewable Energy <strong>Development</strong> Agency, Patna, gasifier<br />
manufacturers, and consultants were also present.<br />
