1. RATIONALE AND SCOPE<br />
This policy defines the scope <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>England</strong> and<br />
establishes a framework for appointment <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong>, including selection criteria and<br />
terms <strong>of</strong> appointment. The policy should be read in conjunction with <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> Role and<br />
Responsibility Procedures.<br />
2. PRINCIPLES<br />
2.1. The <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> is vital to the academic function <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>England</strong>.<br />
The <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> provides leadership and works with the Heads <strong>of</strong> Schools/Pro Vice-<br />
Chancellor and Deans, as appropriate, and the course team and provides leadership.<br />
2.2. Each <strong>Course</strong> or discipline group <strong>of</strong> courses is required to have an appointed <strong>Course</strong><br />
<strong>Coordinator</strong>.<br />
2.3. The appointment <strong>of</strong> staff to the role <strong>of</strong> <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> is transparent and aligned with<br />
UNE’s Enterprise Agreement and UNE’s Employment Equity and Diversity objectives.<br />
3. POLICY<br />
3.1. Scope <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> Role<br />
3.1.1. The <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> plays a key role in leading and managing a course and<br />
facilitating university-wide engagement with the course team.<br />
3.1.2. Specific responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> include the following in respect<br />
<strong>of</strong> an individual <strong>Course</strong>.<br />
a) <strong>Course</strong> Leadership: oversee the implementation at the <strong>Course</strong> level <strong>of</strong> UNE’s<br />
teaching and learning priorities including leadership in innovative course
development, curriculum design, development, implementation, evaluation,<br />
monitoring and review.<br />
b) Quality Enhancement: manage <strong>Course</strong> quality and the on-going improvement<br />
processes in accordance with relevant policies.<br />
c) Student Management: provide academic advice on complex <strong>Course</strong><br />
requirements and student matters as outlined in UNE’s General Rules.<br />
d) External Relationship Management: monitor changes in the external<br />
environment and liaise with relevant internal stakeholders, pr<strong>of</strong>essional,<br />
industry and community bodies, in consultation with the Head <strong>of</strong> School/Pro<br />
Vice-Chancellor and Dean or nominee .<br />
e) Marketing and Recruitment: Promote the <strong>Course</strong> in conjunction with Faculties<br />
and relevant <strong>University</strong> directorates.<br />
f) Regularly report on course issues and outcomes to Head <strong>of</strong> School/Pro Vice-<br />
Chancellor and Dean.<br />
3.2. Appointment <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong><br />
3.2.1. Applicants for the role <strong>of</strong> <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> will be invited to express interest in<br />
the role by the relevant Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean or Head <strong>of</strong> School.<br />
3.2.2. Appointment to the role <strong>of</strong> course coordinator will be made by the<br />
Executive/Management Committee <strong>of</strong> the responsible School or Faculty.<br />
3.2.3. An EEO Observer should be part <strong>of</strong> the selection process.<br />
3.2.4. The term <strong>of</strong> appointment will be for two years.<br />
3.3. Selection Criteria<br />
3.3.1. The selection criteria will be set by the Head <strong>of</strong> School/Pro Vice-Chancellor and<br />
Dean.<br />
3.3.2. To ensure consistency the following criteria must be included as a minimum:<br />
a) Applicant employed at Level C or above.<br />
b) Approval to appoint at Level B may be sought from the Pro Vice-Chancellor<br />
Dean.<br />
c) Demonstrated capacity to undertake the duties/tasks associated with the<br />
position <strong>of</strong> course coordinator as designated in 3.1.2.

1. RATIONALE AND SCOPE<br />
These procedures establish the core responsibilities and performance expectations associated with<br />
the role <strong>of</strong> <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>England</strong>. These procedures should be read in<br />
conjunction with <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> <strong>Policy</strong>.<br />
2. PRINCIPLES<br />
2.1. Each <strong>Course</strong> is required to have an appointed <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> responsible and<br />
accountable for the activities outlined in the associated <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> <strong>Policy</strong> and<br />
developed in this Role and Responsibilities Procedure document.<br />
2.2. Salary and workload allocation relating to duties performed as a <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> are to<br />
align with the UNE Workplace Agreement and School workload policies.<br />
3. RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS<br />
The detailed responsibilities and key performance expectations <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Course</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> include but<br />
are not limited to the following:<br />
3.1. <strong>Course</strong> Leadership<br />
a) Provide effective leadership for implementation <strong>of</strong> UNE’s teaching and learning priorities<br />
at a <strong>Course</strong> level.<br />
b) Provide effective leadership in innovative course development, curriculum design,<br />
development, implementation, evaluation, monitoring and review.<br />
c) Lead a collaborative <strong>Course</strong> team and chair regular course team meetings.<br />
d) Where applicable, ensure that a <strong>Course</strong> Advisory Committee is in place and meets<br />
regularly to provide external industry and pr<strong>of</strong>essional input to the <strong>Course</strong>.<br />
e) Liaise with relevant industry and pr<strong>of</strong>essional groups as an integral part <strong>of</strong> on-going<br />
course development.<br />
f) Coordinate new proposals and review amendments to the existing <strong>Course</strong>.
g) Manage the pr<strong>of</strong>essional accreditation and re-accreditation processes. Advise students<br />
and staff on academic rules.<br />
3.2 Quality Enhancement<br />
a) Manage <strong>Course</strong> quality and continuous improvement processes in accordance with<br />
relevant policies and especially the Academic Quality Management <strong>Policy</strong> 1 .<br />
b) Assist with implementation <strong>of</strong> recommendations from relevant Review Committees 1 .<br />
3.3 Student Management<br />
a) Liaise with the Student Centre regarding advice to students on programs <strong>of</strong> study;<br />
eligibility for admission to candidature enrolment approvals; special<br />
examinations/special consideration/special extensions <strong>of</strong> time; advanced standing,<br />
exclusions and early intervention strategy.<br />
b) Liaise with the Directorate <strong>of</strong> English Language and International Services in respect <strong>of</strong><br />
legislative requirements applicable to international students.. 2<br />
c) Assess applications for Advanced Standing that require the agreement or approval <strong>of</strong> the<br />
course coordinator. Assess applications for students applying for cross institutional<br />
study.<br />
d) Make a determination on applications from students seeking reinstatement or<br />
readmission or re-enrolment after exclusion where the course coordinator’s approval is<br />
required. 3 .<br />
e) Assess and rule on applications from students wishing to enrol concurrently in a degree<br />
<strong>of</strong> Bachelor with Honours in another <strong>Course</strong>. Decide on the application <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Course</strong><br />
rules during transition to a new course or course requirements and for students<br />
resuming study after approved intermission. 4<br />
f) Assess and rule on applications from students wishing to exceed the normal maximum<br />
study load for a full-time student. 5<br />
g) Monitor all attendance requirements for <strong>Course</strong>-based Mandatory Intensive Schools 6<br />
3.4 External Relationship Management<br />
a) Call meetings <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Course</strong> Advisory Committee as required and as relevant to the degree,<br />
including external representation from industry and pr<strong>of</strong>essional groups.<br />
b) Monitor changes in the external environment that may affect the <strong>Course</strong>s. Represent the<br />
<strong>Course</strong> at meetings and events as required.<br />
c) Liaise with relevant external bodies and pr<strong>of</strong>essional groups.<br />
3.5 Marketing and Recruitment<br />
Contribute to the promotion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Course</strong> in conjunction with Faculties and relevant<br />
<strong>University</strong> directorates.<br />
