• The WDPA has its own format and set of standards that ensure
consistent information on protected areas is collected

A Brief History of Standards

• Standards have always been important

• Ancient Egypt: sizing and spacing of the stone
blocks for the pyramids had to be standardised to
ensure the structure was solid

• Ammunition factories: the company had to write up the
procedure for making product, have the procedure approved by

high quality and to avoid duplication of effort, cost and time in
assessing the same products
