MY NAME IS
ELLY AHIMIDIWE
I am from Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania and this summer
I’m coming to the UK to campaign with you to demand
world leaders take action on hunger. Why? Because by
coming together we can be a powerful force for change.
If real development
is to take place, the
people have to be
involved.

This is a quote form Tanzania’s first leader after
independence; he understood that to truly be free we
must work together for our own development. That’s
why what we are doing together is so important, by
demanding leaders tackle the global hunger crisis we are
taking action for a better future.
I’ve seen first-hand the impact that land grabbing to
produce biofuels has in the country where I live. Small
scale farmers are having their land taken by investors,
leaving them with no land to produce food for their
families. Compensation is promised but not given. This is
making people poorer and hungrier.
And it’s not just in my country, all around the world the
global land grab is fuelling hunger. To change this we need
to change the policies driving it.
We also need governments to close the global tax havens
that mean developing countries lose three times more
in revenue than they ever get in aid. These are vital
funds that could be spent fighting hunger, but instead big
companies are draining this money away from the people
who need it. That’s why this year I’ve joined together
with the IF campaign to demand world leaders act.
What we are doing together is so important, that’s why
I will be campaigning with you in London on the 8 June
and in Northern Ireland on the 15 June.

The Enough Food for Everyone IF
campaign is a coalition of over
170 organisations who have come
together to give the government
one simple message:
They must act now
to tackle world hunger

One in eight people go hungry every day, and every
15 seconds a child dies because of hunger. This year
we have a chance to change that. Our government is
hosting the G8 meeting of some of the world’s most
powerful leaders on 17 and 18 June, and ahead of that
a hunger summit on 8 June in London.
Millions of hard-working families face the injustice
of hunger every day; this is our best opportunity to
change that. You can make your voice heard by coming
to the Big IF in London on 8 June.
Already we’ve created some huge changes. By campaigning
together this year we’ve made sure the government kept
its promise to give 0.7% of our income in aid. We’re the
only G8 country so far to do so. We’ve proved that when
we all come together we can force the government to
act. But now it’s crunch time.
This toolkit will give you everything you need help
campaign for change. In your town, in your street and
online people are coming together to demand action.
This is our chance – let’s take it.

WHAT WE WANT
we campaign for change we

Across the world 1 in 8 people don’t have enough food. 2 million children die every
year because they can’t get enough to eat. It’s unfair, it’s unjust and it’s totally
preventable.
This summer we have an amazing opportunity to campaign for change. Our government
is hosting a meeting of eight of the world’s most powerful leaders and hunger is on the
agenda.
The G8 can help fight hunger, but this will only happen IF we push them to act.
To help end hunger, the G8 must:

Help poor countries make sure that people
have enough nourishing food, and support
poor families to grow their own food.
Close tax havens to stop the billions of
pounds that flow out of poor countries
that could be used to end hunger, and
launch a Convention on Tax Transparency
Give people in developing countries more
control over their land by protecting
farmers from land grabs and using land
to grow food not biofuels.
But they will only do this
we push them to act.

THE BIG ISSUES
Clamp down on tax
havens and you can
tackle hunger
IF big global companies stop avoiding the tax they owe
in countries such as India, where one in three of the
world’s malnourished children lives, the money could
be used to help feed children like Sehriya (left).
Governments must act to close the loopholes that allow
companies to get away with not paying what they owe.
One in five of the world’s tax havens are under UK
jurisdiction, so the UK government is uniquely placed to
take action and close the tax havens where money that
flows out of developing countries is hidden. They must
use the opportunity of the G8 to take action and close
tax havens.

Stop landgrabs
driving hunger
An area of land the size of London is being bought up
every six days.
The poorest farmers are losing their land to big companies,
leaving families unable to feed their children. Stopping
these land grabs would help millions of people get enough
to eat.
Companies are also increasingly growing crops for fuel
rather than food. This madness is driving up food and
petrol prices. Every year the UK burns enough of these
crops, known as biofuel, to feed 10 million people.
The UK government should put the issue of large-scale
corporate ‘land grabs’ in developing countries on the G8s
agenda, and take action to stop this happening.
There must be safeguards to ensure that the poorest
people, who could often use this land to grow food, don’t
lose out.
Keep our promises
on aid
Earlier this year, the government’s historic decision to
keep its promises to the world’s poorest people and
spend 0.7% of national income on life-saving aid was a
major breakthrough in the IF campaign.
We became the first G8 country to keep this promise,
sending a signal for other rich countries to do the same.
Now we need to ensure that this money is used to make
strides towards a world free from hunger and malnutrition.
By committing to fund nutrition programmes in the worst
affected countries, the UK and other G8 leaders can help
millions of children currently suffering from malnutrition
survive and reach their potential.

happening
at the event?
The Big IF London is a unique opportunity for us to
make our voices heard. Thousands of people will be
travelling from across the UK to demonstrate against
hunger in London’s Hyde Park. If we make enough
noise G8 leaders will have to act to stop the scandal
of hunger.
There will be a host of inspiring speakers and artists from
across the globe.
As well as this you will be part of creating an iconic symbol
of support for tackling hunger. This will be made out of
spinning flowers, a powerful reminder of the 2 million
children who die because of hunger every day. We need
you to help complete this symbol by adding your spinning
flower on the day.

Why is it so important
to come to the
Big IF London?
On Saturday 8 June, David Cameron hosts a Hunger
Summit in London, this is the start of 10 days of summits
that will culminate at the G8 meeting in Enniskillen in
Northern Ireland on 17 and 18 June. Together we’ll
make sure David Cameron goes to Northern Ireland
with our demands ringing in his ears.

The main event starts at 2pm.
How do I get there?
Hyde Park is easily accessible on public transport
from all the main train stations in London. We will
be organising coaches from many of the main cities
across the UK. Check the Enough Food For Everyone IF
website for all the latest information.
Organising a coach can be a great way of getting lots of
people from your community down to London for our big
IF London G8 moment, and it can save a lot of money
compared to travelling by train!
If you’d like to organise your own coach to and from
London, there are a number of coach companies you
can contact, for example Connections – Coach Travel
Management (www.coachhireconnections.co.uk).
Where do I go once I get there?
Keep an eye on enoughfoodif.org/g8/London for more
details and a map of the event. If you’re organising a
coach, you’ll also find the latest news about pick-up
and drop-off points.
What do I bring?
Come prepared for an outdoor event and check the
weather forecast before you leave. Food and drinks
will be available but you may want to bring some with
you on the day. Don’t forget your spinning flower to
plant in the Big IF!

ARE WHAT COUNT
Spread the word
David Cameron will only listen to our calls and push G8
leaders to act IF we show massive public support for
action to end hunger.
To do this, we need your help to bring thousands like you
to Hyde Park in London on 8 June and to Belfast on 15
June. Please do all you can to ask others to sign up to
support the IF campaign.
Share our leaflets with family, friends, colleagues,
students, community centres, local shops, places of
worship – wherever you can. You can download leaflets
from enoughif.org/domore.
Host a Café IF
Lots of us enjoy sharing tea with friends – and it’s a
great way to grow support for the IF campaign.
We’re encouraging supporters to host Café IF gettogethers,
to bring together people who want to see a
world free from hunger. You’ll need a couple of friends to
help organise your event and reach out in your community.
It’s up to you what you come together to do - plan your trip
to London or Belfast, think about how to mobilise others
in your community or show a film about the campaign.
Play to your own strengths and do something you enjoy.
Just make sure your focus is on global hunger, and what
can be done to end it. You’ll find lots more ideas, and
everything you need to run a Café IF in our online toolkit,
which you can download from enoughif.org/domore.
Make your
SPINNING FLOWER
Make your spinning flower and bring it down to the Big
IF event in London. We’ll be creating a huge, multicoloured
display.
Spinning flowers have been chosen as a symbol of
childhood, and together all the flowers will represent the
2 million children who die because of hunger each year.
We want this image to send a message to world leaders
that they can’t ignore.
