Neo-liberalism<br />

In its dom<strong>in</strong>ant <strong>in</strong>ternational use, neo-liberalism refers to a political-economic philosophy that deemphasizes<br />

or rejects government <strong>in</strong>tervention <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> domestic economy. It focuses on free-market<br />

methods, fewer restrictions on bus<strong>in</strong>ess operations, and property rights. It upholds and promotes <strong>the</strong><br />

market as <strong>the</strong> judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> common good and enshr<strong>in</strong>es competition as <strong>the</strong> supreme good.<br />

Market capitalism<br />

In common usage, an economic system <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong> production are overwhelm<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

privately owned and operated for pr<strong>of</strong>it, decisions regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>of</strong> capital are made privately,<br />

and where production, distribution, and <strong>the</strong> prices <strong>of</strong> goods, services, and labour are affected by <strong>the</strong><br />

forces <strong>of</strong> supply and demand <strong>in</strong> a largely free market.<br />

Praetoria<br />

<strong>The</strong> name given to <strong>the</strong> elite bodyguard <strong>of</strong> a Roman emperor (approximately <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong> a legion) or to<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> this bodyguard. <strong>The</strong> term is sometimes applied to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner circle <strong>of</strong> advisers to a major<br />

political figure.<br />

Preventive war<br />

A k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> war whose public justification is proclaimed as “self-defence.”<br />

Privatization<br />

<strong>The</strong> process <strong>of</strong> transferr<strong>in</strong>g property from public ownership to private ownership and/or transferr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> a service or activity from <strong>the</strong> government to <strong>the</strong> private sector.<br />

Transnational corporations<br />

Corporations with <strong>in</strong>vestments or that operate <strong>in</strong> more than one country and that regularly transfer<br />

capital across national borders.<br />
