Job Descriptions
Purpose
The United Church of Canada is committed to ensuring that the description of jobs is
accurate, complies with legislation, and provides coverage for the tasks required to carry
out the work of each unit.
Policy
Employing units and Conferences are responsible for writing job descriptions in a format
consistent with the template established by the Ministry and Employment Unit, and
assigning appropriate job titles, so that the strategic goals of the unit can be met. Final
authority for job descriptions rests with the Executive Officer/Minister, Conference Executive
Secretary/Speaker, in consultation with the Ministry and Employment Unit.
Procedures
1. Job descriptions should include the tasks and responsibilities of the position, the
position’s relationship to other positions, the conditions under which the work is
performed, and the qualifications required.
2. Job titles should be brief and descriptive of the position, and, where possible, be
consistent with other similar positions in the General Council and Conference offices.
3. Changes to job descriptions must be submitted to the Ministry and Employment Unit to
ensure compliance with category benchmarks, human rights legislation, and
employment equity objectives, and to determine whether the changes are significant
enough to warrant a job category review.
