THESE 1870’S COTTON DRESS PRINTS.
MAKE YOUR QUILT BE THE BELL OF THE BALL WITH
From the end of the Civil War through the end of the nineteenth century, Americans were fascinated with small-scale dress prints,
a fad they called the Calico Craze. Communities held calico balls, where women dressed in cotton dresses rather than the usual silk
evening wear. Local fairs offered prizes for “the handsomest lady dress in calico” and the prettiest “calico babies.” After wartime
scarcity of cotton fabrics, prices had dropped. In 1872, catalogs advertised these cotton prints, primarily manufactured in New England,
at twelve yards for a dollar.
We’ve named the prints in our Calico Craze collection after the old fabric manufacturing mills that lined New England rivers. The
collection focuses on the small-scale dress prints with a few added cretonnes (furnishing fabrics) and wovens, reflecting other
fabrics of the era. Seamstresses rarely used cretonnes, the large-scale prints made for slip covers and curtains in their patchwork, but
they loved them quilt backings and comforters. While New England’s mills printed dress prints by the mile, Southern mills, reconstructing
the postwar economies, wove an incredible variety of plaids, stripes and checks.
Quilters used simple calicos to give a new look to their quilts, which had an orderly look with pronounced contrast between darks
and lights. Unlike earlier chintz quilts, quilts from the calico craze emphasized the patchwork pattern over the print. Whereas earlier
seamstresses took pride in the size of their stitches, quilters at the end of the century loved tiny pieces, begging and borrowing dress
scraps for postage-stamp-sized patches in dozens of different prints. The colors in the collection reflect the palette of the last quarter
of the nineteenth century, when synthetic dyes formulated in test tubes were replacing natural dyes. New colorfast shades emphasized
golden browns, olive greens and muted reds and blues.
“Quite a large number assembled at the ‘Hall’ on Friday evening to enjoy the pleasure of the ‘Calico Carnival’ given by the Ladies’
Lyceum. According to the invitations many of the ladies were attired in calico while the gentlemen looked rather sporty with calico
ties.”
Newspaper account, Chester County, Pennsylvania, about 1900.
