488. HYSSOPUS.—Hyssop. The herb <strong>of</strong> Hysso'pus <strong>of</strong>ficina'lis Linné. Carminative,<br />
sudorific, and stimulant. Dose: 15 to 60 gr. (1 to 4 Gm.).<br />
489. CATARIA, N.F.—CATNIP. The herb <strong>of</strong> Nep'eta cata'ria Linné. Carminative,<br />
stimulant, tonic, and diaphoretic. Dose: 15 to 60 gr. (1 to 4 Gm,).<br />
490. TEUCRIUM.—GERMANDER. The leaves and tops <strong>of</strong> Teu'crium<br />
chamse'drys. Aromatic stimulant; noted as an ingredient in the famous gout remedy<br />
known as Portland Powder.<br />
491. LAMIUM ALBUM Linné.—DEAD NETTLE. (Herb.) An active hemostatic.<br />
492. SALVIA.—SAGE, U.S.P. VIII<br />
The dried leaves <strong>of</strong> Sal'via <strong>of</strong>ficin'alis Linné.<br />
DESCRIPTION.—About 2 inches (50 mm.) long,<br />
ovate, obtuse, base narrow to the long petiole,<br />
thickish, wrinkled, grayish-green, s<strong>of</strong>t, hairy, and<br />
reticulated and glandular beneath; odor aromatic,<br />
taste bitterish and astringent. Salvia is said to be<br />
adulterated with other species, closely resembling<br />
the <strong>of</strong>ficial in late summer.<br />
CONSTITUENTS.—Volatile oil (0.5 to 0.75 per<br />
cent.), resin, tannin, etc. The volatile oil contains<br />
pinene, cineol, and salviol, C 10 H 18 O.<br />
ACTION AND USES.—Stimulant, tonic,<br />
astringent, vulnerary, in infusion or decoction. Dose:<br />
15 to 60 gr. (1 to 4 Gm.).<br />
