SA Volleyball Schools Cup
2013 Champion School
Melbourne
Trainings
3
Once again State Cup was a success. Brighton had 30 teams training hard prior
to the tournament with the aim to once again become the State Schools
Champions. This year State Cup was held six weeks earlier so that it was
completed before other sports finals started, when team may lose some players.
Over the whole weekend many games were played and, in the true Brighton
spirit, they received lots of support. We had 10 teams win gold, 3 teams win
silver, and 5 teams win bronze. This was an outstanding effort as we once again
were named the State School Cup Champions.
A big thank you goes to all of the coaches, managers, parents and supporters
who help make this weekend a success. The teams will continue to train hard
through out the coming months as we now put our focus towards the Australian
Schools Championship in Melbourne at the end of the year.
Year 10 Knockout Competition
On Friday the 28 th June the Year 10 Knockout Volleyball Competition was held at Brighton
Secondary School. The Boys team enjoyed a most successful day. They played quality
volleyball, culminating in an outstanding display in the final. The level of skill and team play was
of the highest order as the boys were able to execute team strategy and skills under great
pressure. The team’s performance is a credit to continued improvement of the players and the
Year 10 Boys class as a whole and we are proud of the improvement across this whole group
throughout 2013 as it has enhanced the depth of volleyball in the boys program. Keep up the
outstanding development boys – persistence is paying off!
Jamie Tester, Yr 10 KO Boys Coach
Brighton also hosted the State Finals for the Year 10 Girls Knockout competition. Automatically
qualifying for the tournament denied our girls the chance to develop strategies and systems in match
conditions. However, we were confident that our preparation and talents would see us compete
strongly throughout the daylong event. In our first match we accounted for Adelaide in a one-sided
affair. The next encounter against Loxton was a little tougher, but again the girls were successful in
winning in straight sets. This saw us finishing 1 st in Pool A, with a crossover final against Renmark
who had finished second to Heathfield in Pool B. Again the girls played well to win.
In the Grand Final we came up against Heathfield who were also undefeated. The first set saw the
girls play their best volleyball of the day to win 25-7. The second set told a different story. Heathfield
improved their serving. This caused errors and indecision on our passers, helping them to a
commanding early lead. With an improved attacking game and superior desire they were successful in
tying the contest at one set each. Thankfully, our girls showed character and belief and were able to
deliver another set of high quality volleyball to convincingly win the third set and the Year 10 KO state
championships for the third year in a row.
On an individual level, Jose Adolphi was superb in her role as libero. Rachel Reeve dominated with
her serve and set with variety and sound decision making. Tahlia Bryant, Maddie O’Connell and
Maddie Jones provided consistent performances as pass-hitter while Phoebe Wittwer-Smith and
Kelsey Reed got stronger as the day went on. Special mention must go to Lauren Dewhirst and Tylah
Kendall who possibly played their best ever competitive volleyball for Brighton in standout
performances whilst Kerry Scott, Taylah Eastwood and Sophie Constantine were also valuable
contributors throughout.
Shane Durbridge, Yr 10 KO Girls Coach.

Open Knockout Competition
On the 8 th of August, the Open Honour Girls team coached by Ms Rodger, and Open Honour Boys
team coached by Mr Healey, travelled up to Heathfield for the Open Knockout Volleyball
Competition. Having only 4 days between the Volleyball State Schools Cup and Knockout, the
competition provided another close and intense day of volleyball.
Both the girls and boys team advanced into the crossover finals as they both finished top in their
respective pools and then continued their good form to win the finals to then play off for Gold.
The girls went on to win the Gold medal match in a very close and tight match, with the score at
15 - 13 in the deciding set.
The boy’s team played well and stayed in touch, but unfortunately a few errors proved costly and
we fell short in the final and went away with the Silver.
A big thankyou to all of those that made it possible for us to play in the knockout competition,
especially the coaches Ms Rodger and Mr Healey.
Congratulation to the above students who were recently selected in the South Australian Secondary School
Sports (SA) State Teams to play in Queensland. The boys won a Silver medal and the girls came home
with the Bronze. All played extremely well in a very strong competition.
Katie Gardner and Jackson Holland were also selected in the All Star Six Australian Representative boys
and girls teams which is a fantastic achievement. Well done to all.

Eyre Peninsula Tour
We left at 6:15 on Sunday the 23 rd of June, after sitting on the bus for a long days drive we arrived at Ceduna.
That night after unpacking and having dinner we all walked to the jetty and went fishing. It was dark by this
point and no one caught a fish, but it was nice to just be off the
bus. The next day we had a coaching session at Ceduna Area
School, we taught kids from year 6- year 9 the basic skills of
volleyball. By the end of the session they had picked volleyball
up very well. After all the coaching sessions were over we got
the opportunity to go to the Aboriginal Painting Work Shop in
Ceduna and learn
how to dot paint. The
paintings there on sale were amazing and extremely detailed and it
was all only done with dots, so that made it even more astonishing.
Some of the woman painters related the stories behind their
paintings to us. We also got to meet the famous aboriginal painter
Beaver Lennon who has been likened to Albert Namatjira as he was
painting at the back of the centre. After painting our dot paintings
we drove a few kilometres out of Ceduna to the Smokey Bay
Oyster Farm. Here we learnt all about how the oysters are
produced. This was fascinating to learn about because its not
something many people get the chance to do and you would not
believe the
process these
oysters go through ready to be ready to be sold. From the
oyster farm we went to the Smokey Bay jetty and went
fishing and squiding. This time three people caught squid.
We also saw a pod of dolphins and a seal. The sun set
here was magnificent, and the water was clear and
calm. This was nice because we had had a long day
and this was peaceful and relaxing.

On Tuesday we left early and drove for four hours to the Great Australian Bight. Here we went to the whale
centre and spent the day looking at whales. They were Southern Wright whales and they were big. At first
they looked like piles of rocks in the water but after a while they started to move and play. The whales would
lie in their back, flip their tails out of the water or poke their heads out of the water, which is called spy
hopping. This was a great experience for everyone, one that we will never forget.
Wednesday was probably the best day on the trip; this was when we went to the aboriginal community at
Koonibba which is 40km west of Ceduna, to a school called Koonibba. This is the only school in the
community; it’s from kindergarten to year 7. When we first arrived we were put into groups and had to set
up the nets. The children then lined up and got split into groups. Some of the groups had older children and
other groups had 2-3 year olds. We found the kids could not get the ball over the net and so we dropped the
net to it looked like a tennis net, this worked extremely well because they could now get a rally going and
they became a lot more confidant. We taught them basic volleyball skills and played games with them. After
playing volleyball with them or just mucking around they wanted us to help them in their classroom, here we
read to them and helped them with their work. When it was time to go we all felt sad to say goodbye. They
had started out scared and by the end some were crying not wanting us to leave and hugging and laughing.
This was an unbelievable experience for all of us. They continued to smile throughout the whole day, which
made us smile. We both got so much out of this day. We made new friends, they learnt new volleyball skills
and we got to see a completely different life style to our own and that was an incredible experience.

Stuart High School was our last stop before home. We had a coaching session here with year 9 and
10 students. We taught them basic volleyball skills and then got into games. After coaching them,
they wanted to show us what their school specialises in, which is Aquiculture. Some teachers and
students took us to their fish farm where they farm King fish and Barramundi. They have a whole
shed filled with tanks containing different sizes fish. The fish get sized regularly and once they reach
a certain size they go into the next size tank. Once the fish is in the last tank reach a certain size, they
then can go on the market to get sold. They told us all about how they breed them and sell them
and their plan to further extend their fish farm with wetlands.
On the way home we stopped at Kimba where Tour de Crawf had just happened to arrive and we got
to be on television and have photos with him. This was great because he was riding to raise money
for breast cancer nurses and doing his part to contribute to society and we had just done something
great in helping local communities as well.
This whole trip was an experience none of us will ever forget. We got the chance to see and do
things others wont ever get to do in their lifetime.
Eyre Peninsula Tour - Koonibba Aboriginal School Visit
On Wednesday the 26 th of June, Brighton Secondary School visited Koonibba Aboriginal
School for a Volleyball training day. Brighton Secondary School is a sport and music focus
school; they arrived with 43 students who all did Volleyball as a subject for the whole
year. I would like to congratulate all the students who came, they quickly got to know
students and had them highly engaged in learning the strategies and techniques involved
with volleyball. Koonibba students were very receptive and immediately showed some
natural flair for the sport. It was fantastic to see how quickly students from Brighton
made solid relationships with students and had them doing numerous activities to help
their hand-eye co-ordination. The Koonibba children rose to the challenge and had a great
time playing and learning with Brighton students.
After the volleyball session, the Koonibba students invited the Brighton students to listen
to them read and then read to them. Our students had a great time and it has been one
of the best days at school this year! On behalf of the school we would like to give a huge
thank you to the staff and students at Brighton Secondary School! Can’t wait for next
year!
Year 12 Aquatics
On the July the 4 th , 5th and 26 th both Year 12 volleyball classes participated in aquatics held at West Lakes.
Due to the weather being miserable this created rough waves so we were only given the choice of
kayaking. Usually students can choose between kayaking, sailing and windsurfing. Each group consisted of
5 students and an instructor. The first day we learnt the basic techniques of how to hold the paddle, sit in
the kayak and strokes such as the front, back and sweep stroke. After lunch we all got to perform deepwater
rescues. This involves one person flipping their boat upside-down, getting out of it and using their
partner to tip water out and get back in. This was a freezing task but was very fun and exciting once done.
The second day was much nicer weather. A few groups joined together as we did a 7km kayak. It was a
nice day as we all were able to chat and have a laugh as we kayaked around Delfin Island. After lunch we
did another form of rescue called the eskimo rescue. This rescue sounded even colder than the first one but
in fact it was a lot better because we had a special skirt on. This skirt kept our legs warm as it trapped the
water from entering out boat when we flipped upside-down. Next we tapped on the side of our boat and
our partner’s front of the boat came in contact so we were able to grab it with our hands. Now we were
leaning half in the water and half out the water, using our hands to push ourselves back up along with a
flick of the hips our boat was upright again.
The last day, which was two weeks later, was assessment day. We all went through the skills again and got
some last minute help with adjusting out techniques then we spent the day performing each skill that was
on the checklist.
Overall this was a very fun and different experience, not many people would get to learn how to properly
kayak and do deep water and eskimo rescues without an experience like this. I think most students enjoyed
this component to Year 12 volleyball because it was something new and exciting to try out, the instructors
were great and overall it was a rewarding fun yet tiring three days.
