Situation 

Ave Maria, a planned community located in Florida, was 

developed to complement one of the first major Catholic 

universities built in the country in decades. The City of 

Ave Maria features a mixture of retail stores, schools, office 

buildings, restaurants, recreational facilities and six distinct 

neighborhoods. 

While planning for Ave Maria, it was important that the 

environment be welcoming, warm and appealing to 

consumers. It was critical for the lighting fixtures to be at the 

appropriate light levels, addressed the issue of light trespass 

and light pollution, and offered the aesthetic appeal needed 

to complement Ave Maria’s unique Italian charm. 

Product Recommendation 

Due to its versatility and aesthetic appeal, AAL’s Spectra 

series was selected for the downtown area, while the 

Universe series was used for upgraded parkway areas. 

The tandem provided a clean and contemporary elegance 

with illumination levels that provided safety for patrons 

and residents, plus the desired ambiance for this new 

streetscape concept.

Situation 

Legacy Town Center, located in Plano, Texas, is a pioneer of 

the new “urban town center” concept. Their challenge was to 

encourage pedestrian life through standardized lighting that 

would fit within its European old world feel and eclectic mixeduse 

architecture. 

The site required high performance luminaires featuring optical 

performance and cost effective ease of maintenance with the 

critical priorities of safety, security and well-lit areas to protect 

visitors, residents and businesses. 


Town planners chose Kim Lighting’s Era ® fixture with advanced 

metal halide technology. Era was the perfect union of 

performance and heritage aesthetics that seamlessly melded 

into the feel of the trailblazing new town. Due to its precise 

illumination spread and superior product life, Kim Lighting Era 

luminaires provide the maximum safety and longevity critical to 

the project’s sustainability goals.

Situation 

Greenville Spartanburg International Airport, located in 

upstate South Carolina, needed to widen and improve the 

airport entrance road to accommodate additional growth. 

Their challenge was to find a landscape lighting solution 

sustainable for a cold environment that would attractively 

illuminate the interstate entranceway while reducing spill 

light for safe vehicular and aircraft traffic. 


GSP Airport authorities chose Kim’s Scarab ® landscape 

accent light with Kim’s new 6W LED system. Due to recent 

technological advancements of LEDs, this was an obvious 

choice because the outdoor installation demanded 

minimal maintenance and reduced electrical consumption. 

Additionally LEDs do not have a filament so they are more 

durable and respond well as the temperature gets cooler.

Situation 

The Gate Riverplace Tower is a 35 story office building, which 

is prominently located in the downtown Jacksonville, Florida 

skyline. The building was originally illuminated by 48 - 1000 

watt mercury vapor fixtures, which happened to have been 

made by Sterner Lighting in the late 1960’s. To conserve energy, 

the owner/engineer decided to upgrade the current lighting 

system with a more efficient system consisting of 40 - 400 watt 

pulse start metal halide Sterner 595 fixtures. Due to the high 

quality and long life of the original Sterner Lighting fixtures, the 

replacement product was an easy choice. 


Sterner Lighting’s products stood the test of time, as they 

had been working well since the 1960’s. The only reason the 

lighting system was replaced was to upgrade to a newer, more 

energy efficient system. The Sterner 595 fixtures not only saved 

energy, but were able to improve the light levels on the building, 

providing more drama, and did so at a lower wattage and with 

fewer fixtures.
