<strong>Short</strong> <strong>CV</strong><br />
<strong>Gerhard</strong> <strong>Bud<strong>in</strong></strong><br />
<strong>Gerhard</strong> <strong>Bud<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>holds</strong> a <strong>PhD</strong> <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>guistics and Master’s degree <strong>in</strong> translation studies. He has<br />
also studied economics and philosophy.<br />
<strong>Gerhard</strong> <strong>Bud<strong>in</strong></strong> is full professor for term<strong>in</strong>ology studies and translation technologies at the<br />
Centre of Translation Studies (CTS) at the University of Vienna (s<strong>in</strong>ce 1 st of January, 2005).<br />
He is director of the Institute for Corpus L<strong>in</strong>guistics and Text Technology (ICLTT) at the<br />
Austrian Academy of Sciences (s<strong>in</strong>ce 1 st of April, 2010) and a member (kM) of the Austrian<br />
Academy of Sciences. He is Chair holder of the UNESCO Chair for Multil<strong>in</strong>gual,<br />
Transcultural Communication <strong>in</strong> the Digital Age.<br />
From 2004 to 2006 and s<strong>in</strong>ce 2008 he has been the deputy director/vice-dean<br />
(Stellvertretender Zentrumsleiter) of the CTS, between 2006 and 2008 he was the<br />
director/dean (Zentrumsleiter) of this unit, which is one of the 18 scientific units of the<br />
University of Vienna (15 Faculties and 3 Centres). The CTS has about 2800 students and<br />
about 150 staff members <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g external teachers.<br />
Research <strong>in</strong>terests and research activities:<br />
His research <strong>in</strong>terests are language technologies, corpus l<strong>in</strong>guistics, and knowledge<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, E-Learn<strong>in</strong>g technologies and collaborative work systems, distributed digital<br />
research environments, term<strong>in</strong>ology studies, ontology eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, cognitive systems, crosscultural<br />
knowledge communication and knowledge organization, philosophy of science, and<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation science. His relevant research priority at the CTS is called “Translation –<br />
Cognition – Technologies” that is also part of the trans-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary Research Platform<br />
“Cognitive Science” at the University of Vienna. For the last 25 years <strong>Gerhard</strong> <strong>Bud<strong>in</strong></strong> has<br />
been active <strong>in</strong> national, European, and <strong>in</strong>ternational research projects <strong>in</strong> the areas mentioned<br />
above (see separate list for projects s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005).<br />
Other activities<br />
<strong>Gerhard</strong> <strong>Bud<strong>in</strong></strong> is vice-president of the International Institute for Term<strong>in</strong>ology Research and<br />
Chair of a technical sub-committee <strong>in</strong> the International Standards Organization (ISO) focus<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on term<strong>in</strong>ology and language resources (ISO/TC 37/SC 2 2001-2009, SC 1 2009-present),<br />
manag<strong>in</strong>g pre-normative research. He is member of scientific advisory boards at various<br />
research organisations and of editorial boards of several scientific journals. For many years he<br />
has been active as evaluator of research proposals as well as of ongo<strong>in</strong>g research projects for<br />
the European Commission (DG INFSO) <strong>in</strong> the fields of language eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, multimedia<br />
semantics, ontology eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, as well as for DFG, NSF, and other comparable national<br />
research fund<strong>in</strong>g agencies (Canada, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany,<br />
Croatia, France, Hong Kong, etc.).

Teach<strong>in</strong>g activities<br />
<strong>Gerhard</strong> <strong>Bud<strong>in</strong></strong> has been supervis<strong>in</strong>g Master theses (about 400) and doctoral dissertations (15<br />
completed, 15 ongo<strong>in</strong>g) s<strong>in</strong>ce January 1997 (Habilitation). The topics of teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
term<strong>in</strong>ology studies, term<strong>in</strong>ology management, corpus l<strong>in</strong>guistics, multil<strong>in</strong>gualism,<br />
specialized communication, language technologies, mach<strong>in</strong>e translation, localisation,<br />
technical writ<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>formation science, philosophy of science, etc.<br />
