County's history recorded in book
PATERSON - The history of
Passaic County and its principal
city is inextricably woven into
the text of the United States'
economic and social development.
In this year of the county's
sesquicentennial, the Great Paterson
Chamber of Commerce is
introducing the product of two
years' research and writing by
the late J. Palmer Murphy. It
was completed by his daughter
Margaret.
"Paterson and Passaic County:
An Illustrated History" is a
handsomely bound book, published
by Windsor Publications
of Northridge, California. It contains
information about the origins
of the city, conceived by
Alexander Hamilton as the first
planned industrial center of the
new nation, as well as the
progress of individual communities
throughout the county.
The book traces the recurring
economic rises and falls of the
struggling city until it hit its
stride as the locomotive capital
of the United States during the
second half of the 19th century,
before attaining a world reputation
as the "Silk City" at the
turn of this century.
The lavishly illustrated work
features material about the formation
of Passaic County from
parts of Bergen and Essex counties,
as well as interesting facts
about the lives and enterprises
of the people of what is now 16
communities within the county.
- Palmer Murphy had a
unique sense of the history of
this county," said Vincent J.
Cortese, president of the
Greater Paterson Chamber.
"He was actively involved in
public and community life,
while maintaining a genuine
curiosity about the development
of the city and county."
Also featured in the book is a
section entitled "Partners in
Progress" outlining the contributions
and growth of approximately
SO local enterprises -
large and small - de. monstrating
the continued vitality and attraction
of the city and its surroundings
for businesses.
