NEW JERSEY STATION AGENT (Ticketdater) POSTMARKS<br />

This type of marking when used as a postmark was used mostly in small towns where<br />

the postmaster was also the railroad station agent. Since the Post Office Department<br />

only provided handstamp postmarks at larger post offices, small town postmasters had<br />

to fend for thenselves, using either manuscript or purchasing a commercially available<br />

type with their own funds. The postmasters who were also employed by the railroads<br />

as station agents, made do with the ticketdaters provided by the railroads, saving<br />

themselves the effort associated with manuscript or the expence of purchasing a handstamp<br />

Catalog numbers listed here are those assigned by Charles Towle in the MPOS book<br />

"US Route b Station Agents Postmarks", but as can be seen here, many types are known<br />

that have not as yet been recognized.<br />

This compiler hopes that this dissemination of tracings and information will result<br />

in additional reports of uses of these markings, along with the reporting of any new<br />

types.<br />
