Dear Friends:<br />

Partnership is a word we hear a lot these days in<br />

the not-for-profit world. We all are working together<br />

more closely than ever; hard economic times bring us<br />

more people in need, and oftentimes fewer resources<br />

with which to serve them.<br />

To us, partnership means all of us working together<br />

to make an impact on hunger and poverty in Greater<br />

Indianapolis. The past year was one in which we<br />

stretched our resources, knowledge, and expertise,<br />

and, in the true spirit of partnership, helped our<br />

hungriest neighbors get through the toughest times<br />

of their lives.<br />

Who do we serve? Children—many of whom<br />

wouldn’t have a nutritious meal today if <strong>Second</strong><br />

<strong>Helpings</strong> didn’t provide it. The homeless—sadly, a<br />

growing demographic in our city. The elderly. People<br />

struggling to afford to heat their homes. Through<br />

our partnerships with community centers, daycares,<br />

missions, and others—not to mention all of our<br />

wonderful donor and volunteers—we feed more<br />

than 2,500 of our hungriest neighbors, six days a<br />

week. In fact: We all did our part in <strong>2010</strong>—donors,<br />

volunteers, employees, agencies, all of us together.<br />

Every agency that needed meals from us got them.<br />

The <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> Culinary Job Training Program<br />

has been granted the American Culinary Federation<br />

Education Foundation (ACFEF) Quality Program<br />

Certificate for quah the mayor’s office has asked<br />

the Food Resource Network to convene a small<br />

group (our Food Resource Network partners and<br />

an additional 10-12) to have a conversation about<br />

childhood hunger. This meeting/conversation is<br />

scheduled for June 30th.<br />

Finally, I’d like once again to thank all of our partners.<br />

We’ve forged many wonderful partnerships over the<br />

years—with business, agencies, and individuals. The<br />

need for <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>’ services may be greater<br />

than ever. It’s a challenge we’re prepared to meet—<br />

<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>, Inc. accepts donated perishable<br />

and overstocked food to prepare nutritious meals for<br />

thousands of hungry children and adults every day,<br />

and distributes them free of charge through local<br />

social service agencies in Greater Indianapolis. <strong>Second</strong><br />

<strong>Helpings</strong> also trains unemployed and underemployed<br />

adults for meaningful careers in the culinary industry.<br />

Dear Friends:<br />

Partnership is a word we hear a lot these days in the not-for-profit<br />

world. We all are working together more closely than ever; hard<br />

economic times bring us more people in need, and oftentimes<br />

fewer resources with which to serve them.<br />

To us, partnership means all of us working together<br />

to make an impact on hunger and poverty in greater<br />

Indianapolis. The past year was one in which we<br />

stretched our resources, knowledge, and expertise,<br />

and, in the true spirit of partnership, helped our<br />

hungriest neighbors get through the toughest times<br />

of their lives.<br />

Who do we serve? Children — many of whom<br />

wouldn’t have a nutritious meal today if <strong>Second</strong><br />

<strong>Helpings</strong> didn’t provide it. The homeless — sadly,<br />

a growing demographic in our city. The elderly<br />

— struggling to balance buying groceries or<br />

buying medicine. Through our partnerships with<br />

community centers, daycares, missions, and others<br />

— not to mention all of our wonderful donors<br />

and volunteers — we feed more than 2,900 of our<br />

hungriest neighbors, six days a week. In fact:<br />

• <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> provides food to 74 social<br />

service agency partners, saving these agencies<br />

$2 million a year.<br />

• We partner with over 600 volunteers, who worked<br />

for us a record-breaking 30,628 hours in <strong>2010</strong> —<br />

equal to 15 full-time employees.<br />

• The Culinary Job Training program partners with<br />

instructors, chefs, businesses, and community<br />

organizations to make sure our students learn<br />

great culinary skills — and life skills.<br />

• <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> had a 20% increase in meal<br />

production in <strong>2010</strong>. Our food donors stepped up.<br />

At a time when they could have pulled back, they<br />

kept giving.<br />

We all did our part in <strong>2010</strong> — donors, volunteers,<br />

employees, agencies — all of us together. Every<br />

agency that needed meals from us got them.<br />

The <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> Culinary Job-Training Program<br />

has been granted the American Culinary Federation<br />

Education Foundation (ACFEF) Quality Program<br />

Certificate for quality culinary art programs. We are<br />

the only training school our size in the country to<br />

be awarded this prestigious certificate. Thanks to all<br />

who made this happen for our graduates, including<br />

our friends at Ivy Tech and the local chapter of the<br />

American Culinary Federation, who sponsored our<br />

application.<br />

We’re also pleased to report that <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong><br />

received an “Exceeds Standards” rating as an<br />

Excellent Agency from United Way during the

biennial evaluation. These results will positively<br />

impact our base allocation funding starting in the<br />

2011 funding cycle and beyond.<br />

Media continued to play a big part in spreading<br />

the word about <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>, expanding our<br />

awareness and helping us cultivate new donors.<br />

We used a paid media plan that coincided with<br />

normal marketing and fundraising activities; we<br />

also were recognized in many publications and<br />

events, including: NUVO, The Indianapolis Star,<br />

Indianapolis Business Journal, Urban Times, NCAA<br />

Final Four, Art of the Matter, and many others.<br />

In the past year, our outreach included a broader<br />

relationship with St. Vincent dePaul Client Choice<br />

Pantry. We invited Pete Withey to speak to our board<br />

and included St. Vincent dePaul in our board retreat<br />

agency visits. A mutually beneficial partnership exists<br />

with this tremendous volunteer-driven organization.<br />

We also continued to pursue our interests in<br />

truly eliminating hunger in our community. We<br />

participated with Elders at the Table (EAT), a<br />

consortium of providers, stakeholders, and funders<br />

who are identifying the needs, opportunities, and<br />

challenges to feed and advocate for the seniors within<br />

our community. We also took steps to identify ways<br />

we can support hunger relief efforts in the counties<br />

surrounding Indianapolis. Working with United Way<br />

and a group of Hamilton County nonprofit leaders,<br />

we launched two pilot programs in Noblesville: one<br />

through First United Methodist Church, and the<br />

other through the Boys and Girls Club. In addition,<br />

we began a relationship supporting the Lebanon<br />

Boys & Girls Club through their Kids Care Program.<br />

Also, we continue to meet with Douglas Hairston<br />

in the mayor’s office and the Indianapolis Food<br />

Resource Network group to address hunger in our<br />

city. We have reported back to the participants in our<br />

fall summit with our lessons learned. The Network<br />

leaders held neighborhood meetings within the<br />

townships to continue conversations about how<br />

local pantries can work together to facilitate feeding<br />

more people.<br />

Finally, I’d like once again to thank all of our partners.<br />

The need for <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>’ services may be<br />

In the fiscal year of July 1, <strong>2009</strong> through June 30, <strong>2010</strong>, <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>:<br />

Agency Overview<br />

The <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> Culinary Job-Training<br />

Program was honored as a “Program of Excellence”<br />

by the American Culinary Federation Education<br />

Foundation. Additionally the ACFEF recognized it as<br />

a “Quality Program.” Quality Program status is no<br />

small feat; it’s awarded to programs that require fewer<br />

than 1,000 hours, but whose mission, curriculum,<br />

teaching methods, and outcomes match the quality<br />

standards of the American Culinary Federation.<br />

“This verifies what we’ve always believed,” <strong>Second</strong><br />

<strong>Helpings</strong> Chef Carl Conway said. “This endorsement<br />

will allow our graduates to go into the culinary<br />

workforce with another stamp of approval.”<br />

This past year, students in our Culinary Job-Training<br />

Program were treated to guest lectures from some of<br />

the best in the business. Chef Jeff Bricker, Program<br />

Chair of Hospitality Administration at Ivy Tech,<br />

shared his knowledge of classical French cuisine<br />

with students. And Chef Roger Duran of BARcelona<br />

Tapas imparted wisdom gleaned from many years of<br />

fine dining experience – both in Indianapolis and in<br />

other parts of the country.<br />

Awards and recognition.<br />

Thanks to the outstanding work of our volunteers,<br />

<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> won the Jefferson Award for<br />

Nonprofit Volunteer Program of the Year in <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

The award is presented annually to an agency that<br />

effectively uses volunteers to further their mission<br />

and help the community.<br />

<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> volunteer Hal Cole was presented<br />

with the Mayor’s Community Service Award in <strong>2010</strong><br />

— an award that recognizes Indianapolis citizens<br />

who make notable contributions and commitments<br />

to community service. Hal’s work has made a major<br />

impact — not only at <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>, but also in<br />

the Indianapolis community at large.<br />

“Best of the Best.”<br />

For the past 10 years, the Indiana Achievement<br />

Awards has recognized Indiana’s best-run, mosteffective<br />

nonprofits. The IAA recognized <strong>Second</strong><br />

<strong>Helpings</strong> for being among the “Best of the Best”<br />

nonprofits in the Indiana, citing its “innovation,<br />

sustainability and impact.” <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> is the<br />

only three-time winner of this prestigious award.<br />

Harvest comes home.<br />

In an effort to bring people closer to the front lines<br />

at <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>, we hosted our popular food<br />

and wine fundraiser, Harvest, in our own facility.<br />

“Harvest at Home” gave visitors a first-hand look<br />

at how <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> sends out approximately<br />

2,900 meals a day while helping disadvantaged<br />

adults work for a new shot at life.<br />

Less than a year after graduating from the<br />

Culinary Job-Training Program, Cornelius Cooper<br />

wasted no time making a good impression. He<br />

was nominated for a ROSE Award (Recognition<br />

of Service Excellence) by one of his customers at<br />

Levy Restaurants at Conseco Fieldhouse. ROSE<br />

Awards honor hospitality employees or volunteers<br />

who exemplify excellent customer service. These<br />

are industry champions who, through one-on-one<br />

or behind-the-scenes contact, positively influence a<br />

visitor’s experience in Indianapolis.<br />

<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> has been meeting with Douglas<br />

Hairston of the Mayor’s Front Porch Alliance and<br />

the Indianapolis Food Resource Network to address<br />

hunger in our city. The objective: To meet the needs<br />

of hungry neighbors by bringing more than 200<br />

hunger-fighting groups in Indianapolis together in a<br />

collaborative effort. By sharing ideas and resources,<br />

IFRN aims to improve overall hunger relief efforts<br />

in Indianapolis. We will continue to be a key partner<br />

in the IFRN, focusing on issues that are critical<br />

to our mission, such as ending childhood hunger,<br />

meeting the needs of the elderly, and expanding the<br />

availability of congregant meals to those in need.<br />

Employees from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police<br />

Department, the Indianapolis Fire Department, and<br />

the Indiana State Police challenged their friends in<br />

the local media to a chili cook-off. The winning<br />

recipe was served during the first-annual Chili on<br />

the Circle – a new benefit for <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>. And<br />

with the generous support of Kroger, it has become<br />

an annual event, strengthening our community<br />

partnerships and raising awareness of our mission<br />

throughout Indianapolis.<br />

<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> teamed up with local web<br />

developers SmallBox for a unique challenge: Design,<br />

develop, and launch a new <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> website<br />

in under 24 hours. The new website featured<br />

streamlined navigation, photo galleries, a blog, and<br />

a Twitter feed, providing various mediums to tell the<br />

many stories of <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong>. “This project was<br />

the perfect opportunity to spread the word about a<br />

great organization, while creating a website that will<br />

build awareness,” SmallBox CEO Jeb Banner said.<br />

For the second straight year, <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Helpings</strong> awarded<br />

the Time, Talent and Treasure Award to a supporter<br />

who embodies those three qualities: A person who<br />

volunteers, gives knowledge and skill, and offers<br />

generous financial support. This year’s award was<br />

presented to Jennifer Vigran, a longtime <strong>Second</strong><br />

<strong>Helpings</strong> volunteer, donor, and board member.<br />

charge through local social service<br />

agencies in greater Indianapolis.<br />
