Evergreen Hospital Medical Center’s nationally-recognized Family 

Maternity Center. They each share our commitment to quality, 

family-centered maternity care. 

You’ll find the providers grouped by practice. Since you may 

periodically see other members of your provider’s practice during 

your pregnancy, this will give you a feel for the entire staff. 

Practice listings do not include information about office hours 

and insurance coverage, as both frequently change in response 

to patient needs. For the most current information regarding 

office hours and insurance coverage, we encourage you to contact 

the practice.

Pondering Parenthood | For those thinking about starting a family, this two-hour program will 

help you consider the option of pregnancy and provide tips for selecting a provider and birthing 

center that meet your expectations. Includes a brief tour of the Family Maternity Center. 

Celebrating Your Pregnancy | Once you’re pregnant, learn how to grow a healthy baby and 

have a healthy pregnancy. This two-hour program focuses on fetal growth and development, 

optimal lifestyle choices for pregnancy, and common changes in family relationships during 

pregnancy. 

Complete Birthing Suite Tour | Receive a complete overview of the full range of services 

offered by the Family Maternity Center, and a firsthand look at amenities provided in our 

“home-away-from-home” birthing suites.

Tips for Selecting a Provider 

Childbirth is a very special time, so it’s important the chemistry be right between 

you and your care provider. 

Most providers offer “meet and greet” visits at no charge. This is a good opportunity 

to ask questions about the provider’s philosophy and practices, and to see if the “fit” is 

right between you and the provider. 

Family Maternity Center experts suggest these questions about the provider’s 

qualifications, routine practices, accessibility and harmony with your feelings 

about childbirth and medical care.

Qualifications | Are you board certified or credentialed? 

| How long have you been in practice? 

| How many babies do you deliver in a month? 

Routine Practices | What are your fees for office visits and delivery? 

| What are your views on weight gain, nutrition and exercise during pregnancy? 

| What prenatal tests do you do routinely, and why? 

| What kinds of procedures do you routinely order for women in labor 

(IV’s, medications, etc.)? 

| What percentage of your patients are induced, and what are the main reasons? 

| What percentage of your patients are delivered by cesarean section? 

The cesarean section rate in the Pacific Northwest is 16-20%; if the provider’s 

rate is significantly higher, you’ll want to know why. 

| How do you feel about birth plans, and do you follow them? 

Accessibility | What is the scheduled length of your office visits? 

| To whom should I address questions between office visits? 

| At what point during my labor will you arrive? 

| How likely is it that you will be there for my birth? 

| May I meet the others who may be there if you’re not? 

Harmony | What is your philosophy about childbearing and birth? 

| What role do your patients play in making decisions about their own care? 

| (If this applies to you) How do you care for a woman who has had a traumatic 

birth experience, or a history of sexual abuse? 

| How do you feel about family visits during pregnancy, the role of the partner 

and the presence of older children during a birth? 

Ask open-ended questions to get the most informative answers about a provider’s 

philosophy. 

Family Maternity Center experts also recommend not making the provider’s gender 

an issue. There are a lot of wonderful providers – male and female. A provider’s philosophy 

of care should be more important than gender.

Beth Skrypzak, MD

Dr. Skrypzak wants her patients to have an active voice in their health care, from minor treatment options to preventive 

medicine. She believes her role is to inform and guide them in their personal choices. Dr. Skrypzak supports less

Maternal-Fetal Medicine, part of Evergreen’s Women's and Children's Services continuum, offers high-risk 

OB services. The staff of perinatologists are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of problems that 

sometimes occur during pregnancy. The team of doctors, nurses, genetic counselors and sonographers 

assist your care provider in managing pre-term labor, diabetes, multiple gestations and hypertension. They 

also provide leading-edge diagnostic and monitoring services such as high resolution ultrasound, nuchal 

translucency screening, amniocentesis, chorionic villous sampling, biophysical profiles and antepartum fetal 

surveillance (NST). 

MFMC also offers complete OB care to patients with a high degree of complexity and risk, or when very 

close pregnancy supervision is required. 

Patients should have a referral from their healthcare provider to be seen by Maternal-Fetal Medicine. 

Robin Haynes de Regt, MD 

Born: 1954

Board Certification: Obstetrics & Gynecology; Maternal Fetal Medicine 

Medical Education: Brown University (Rhode Island) 

Dr. de Regt primarily sees patients referred from other obstetricians, though occasionally she accepts a patient who is 

clearly “high risk” as a private patient. Dr. de Regt is committed to using the best technology available to manage 

a pregnancy in a caring and empathetic way. She views her role as a means of making a difficult situation easier 

for a patient. She provides fetal diagnostic services including nuchal translucency screening, early amniocentesis, 

amniocentesis, fetal umbilical cord sampling and targeted ultrasound as well as formal consultations. 

Carolyn Kline, MD 

Born: 1958

Board certification: Board eligible (passed written boards for Maternal-Fetal Medicine 1999) 

Medical education: Stanford University Medical School; Harvard School of Medicine 

Dr. Kline specializes in high risk pregnancies, providing care to mothers and babies with specific health problems, risks 

or concerns. Although most of her patients are referred from other obstetrical care providers, Dr. Kline gladly accepts 

patients who have complications or risks in their pregnancy. Dr. Kline is committed to providing care that combines 

the latest technological advances with a genuine caring for families and their needs.

Susan E. Rutherford, MD 

Born: 1953 



Board Certification: Obstetrics & Gynecology; Maternal Fetal Medicine 


Dr. Rutherford acts as a consultant to assist a patient’s doctor in the evaluation or treatment of problems in 

pregnancy. In her practice, she strives to create an environment that combines information and technology with a 

genuine caring for families. Her aim is to enable families to be full partners in their own health care. Dr. Rutherford 

has publications on ultrasound, thromboembolism and exercise in pregnancy. She has a special interest in ultrasound 

and provides fetal diagnostic services including amniocentesis. 

Martin Walker, MD 

Born: 1960

Medical Education: Nottingham University School of Medicine 

Dr. Walker practices in the area of high-risk pregnancy – mothers and babies with specific health problems, concerns 

or risks. His patients are primarily referred from other providers of maternity care, but he is happy to see private 

patients who have a clear risk in their pregnancy. His special interests include ultrasound nuchal translucency 

screening, chronic villous sampling, amniocentesis and fetal diagnosis and therapy. Dr. Walker believes in care that 

mixes current knowledge and techniques with the time-honored skills of listening and compassion.

Dr. Morell’s birth philosophy is one of inclusion: he’s interested in family-centered birth, and he developed a specialized 

drape with a viewing window that allows a mother to see her baby while having a cesarean birth. He believes his role as a 

physician is to empower patients by providing medical information that allows them to make the best possible decisions.

Medical Education: Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing (Hull, England); Simpson Memorial Maternity 

Pavilion (Edinburgh, Scotland) 

Ms. Howarth educates her patients about how to live a healthy lifestyle, with emphasis on personal care, preventive 

medicine, and treating the patient as a whole person. She was a midwife in England, Scotland and Wales 

before moving to the U.S. 


Barbara Plovie, ARNP

Credentials: Certified Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner 


Ms. Plovie maintains that women of all ages experience unique anatomical, physical and emotional transitions. Her 

aim is to listen to patients, to meet their health care needs and requests, and to empower women to make health care 

related choices. Ms. Plovie is the author of several publications about diabetes in pregnancy.

Mrs. McEachern serves as a women’s health and primary care provider for numerous insurance plans. She enjoys all

Ms. Schubert recognizes in each woman the interplay of physical, psychosocial, cultural, social and economic
