1. INTRODUCTION
In order to promote the role of Indonesian students in Tohoku area, Indonesian Student Association in
Japan, Miyagi Chapter (PPI Sendai), collaborating with Indonesian Embassy at Tokyo, also supported by
Garuda Indonesia and Pelita Indonesia Education Fund proudly organized Indonesian Cultural Festival
2012: “Japan, we are with you”, abbreviated as FESTINA 2012. This event was held on April 7 th , 2012. It
provided an opportunity for Japanese and foreign residents in Tohoku area to better know the diversity
of art and culture of Indonesia in the form of cultural presentations and Indonesian arts performances.
It was a great honor for PPI Sendai to hold this event since Japanese people in general have already had
a good perception of Indonesian societies in Japan which have contributed to volunteering activities in
the midst of the disaster that hit Tohoku area on March 2011.
FESTINA 2012 was expected to revive the spirit of Japanese people, especially in Tohoku area, to
overcome any post-disaster problems. By arranging this event, hopefully we are able to open up many
new vistas on the values that can be taken from Indonesian philosophy, in order to be able to build
Japan one more time after the disaster. We would also like to promote our social responsibility
activities by supporting elementary and high school Indonesian students who are suffering from
economic problems in Indonesia. Therefore, we are going to donate half of the profit obtained from this
event to them.
FESTINA 2012 also provided a good opportunity for Indonesian students in the Tohoku region, as
future Indonesian leaders, to improve their leadership skills and international networks, especially in
Japan. We hope that the skills, knowledge, and experiences gained from this event can be beneficial for
Japanese societies which the students are interacting to and have positive impacts for even larger
societies.
This report is intended to summarize the main activities taken place in FESTINA 2012. Our deepest
gratitude to all the sponsors for the cooperation before, during, and after FESTINA 2012, enabling us to
successfully arrange this event. Hopefully, we can always keep our collaboration in the future.
Sincerely,
2. PREPARATIONS
2.1 Sponsorship
We started working on FESTINA 2012 from the end of December 2011 by sending an event proposal to
several potential collaborators and sponsors. Until March 2012, we were able to cooperate with three
sponsors:
• Indonesian Embassy at Tokyo (main sponsor and advisor)
• Garuda Indonesia (on-stage advertisement)
• Pelita Indonesia Education Fund (special sponsorship)
We also cooperated with ENAK restaurant at Natori in arranging the food certification and with Ace
Global Service in providing mineral water packages (AQUASE) to the guests.
2.2 Venue
We booked “Sendai Fukushi Plaza” at 2-12-2 Itsusubashi-Sendai on 7 April 2012, utilizing its three main
halls:
• Fureai Hall: for stage performance
• Tenji Lobby: for photo exhibition
• Plaza Hall: for serving free Indonesian food and cultural expo
2.3 Art Performers
All the performers in FESTINA 2012 were Indonesian students in Tohoku area. We started our
practice from early February 2012 and we ran intensive practice program for almost two months.
Although we were not professional performers, yet we gave our best to the audience.
There were 6 art performances in FESTINA 2012:
(1) Piring dance, (2) Angklung, (3) Maduppa Bosara dance, (4) Pencak Silat, (5) Legong Kraton
Condong/ Bali dance, and (6) Saman dance.
2.4 Foods
We served “Mie Bakso” (meatball soup with noodles) as free dinner for every guests in the festival. As
stated above, we cooperated with Mr. Anang, the owner of ENAK restaurant at Natori, in arranging food

certification. Beside Mie Bakso, we also sold other foods such as “Mie Aceh”, “Kue Lapis”, and “Keripik
Tempe”.
2.4 Publication
In order to advertise the festival and to attract guests, we printed 100 posters and around 1,000 leaflets
(colored and black-white) and distributed them to community centers, schools, and other public areas
around Sendai. We also maintained two websites for FESTINA 2012, starting from early March 2012,
which are http://festina.ppisendai.org (Japanese version) and http://festina.ppijepang.org (English
version)
We launched 300 tickets, priced at 1,000 yen each. Among those tickets, 20 were reserved for our
invited guests (VIP). Through very intensive mouth-to-mouth, posters, leaflets, and online promotions
(including social media and mailing list), we successfully sold 276 tickets.

network.
3.2 Food and Cultural Expo (18:00 – 18-50 JST and 19:47 – 20:10 JST)
about, who the sponsors were, and the contents of the festival.
19:03 – 19:08 Reception of Donation
From the volunteering activities which were managed since the March 2011 earthquake, the Indonesian
student society still has 126,000 yen to be donated. FESTINA 2012 was a good occasion to give the
donation. We also presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Sendai City office as a token of our
appreciation. His excellency Mr. M. Luthfi, the Indonesian ambassador for Japan, became our
representative in this donation reception.
19:33 – 19:37 Angklung: Bengawan Solo
(Performers: Rachmawati – keyboard, Aunuddin S. Vioktalamo, Adam B. Cahaya, Yuni N. Azzizah, Arif
Santoso, Hesky Hasdeo, N. N. Suartini, Muhammad Irka, Abiandini K. Huda, Riyan Budiman, Diptarama,
Martin Sirait)
Angklung is a famous Indonesian traditional music instrument. Being a “traditional” does not mean it
cannot be used to play contemporary music. In the first session, the performers proved this argument
by putting on a great show of angklung in playing the legendary Indonesian song which is also very
famous in Japan, the “Bengawan Solo”.
19:37 – 19:47 Maduppa Bosara Dance
(Performers: Rachmawati, Dian A. Elisabeth, Dini R. Santoso)
Maduppa Bosara is a form of a dance originated from Makassar, South Sulawesi. This dance is usually
performed to entertain guests while providing cakes in the traditional vessel named “Bosara”. This time
in FESTINA 2012, we did not give cakes but souvenirs instead. After the dance, the dancers offered the
souvenirs to the audiences who sat in the front.

20:10 – 20:21 Ibing Pencak Silat
(Performers: Ulya Khalid, Muhammad Irka, Imam Fathoni, Ahmad Ridwan and Prio Agung – kendang)
Ibing Penca is one of the variant of Pencak Silat, the Indonesian traditional martial art originated from
West Java, which focuses on the artistic senses of Pencak Silat’s actions. Ibing literally means “dance”
and Penca means the part of Pencak Silat (“to fight artfully”). The performance of Ibing Penca during
FESTINA 2012 was accompanied by “kendang” (Indonesian traditional instrument) percussion.
20:21 – 20:38 Indonesian Language Crash Course
20:49 – 20:58 Bali Dance: Legong Kraton Condong
(Performer: N. N. Suartini)
Legong Kraton Condong is one type of world-famous Bali dances and is also considered to be the most
complicated. Many guests enjoyed this performance because they knew Bali very well and was really
eager to see the performance.

As the closing performance, Indonesian students affiliated to Saman Sendai Club performed a modified
Likok Pulo dance. This dance is under the same family with Saman dance, Indonesian traditional dance
originated from Aceh. This dance involves quick hand movements and lots of clappings, performed in
beautifully organized movements among the dancers. All the audiences enjoyed this attraction very
much and gave a standing ovation at the end of the performance, which also closed all sessions of
FESTINA 2012.
