Eureka Freshman Basketball - The Future Looks Bright!
Eureka High School has enjoyed a lot of success this year with their freshmen
basketball program, setting the stage for a strong Junior Varsity and Varsity
program for years to come.
The Eureka Freshman Girls' basketball team finished with an impressive 18-2
record. The girls were second place in the Lindbergh Tournament and first place
in the Park/Rock Tournament.
“This was really a special group of girls. I knew from watching and working with
them this summer that they were going to be a talented team. The girls played
for one another, they understood what it means to play as a team. Our success
this season was a team effort. First place in the Park/Rock Tournament playing a tough Marquette team was the
perfect ending to a perfect season, “ shared Zach Crow, Freshman Girls Basketball Coach for Eureka.
The 2012/2013 team includes: Katie Adams, Jade Sterling, Madison Taggart, Madison Schaffer, Collin Pattion, Erin
Roth, Liz McNair, Clair McCrimmon, Ainsley McCrimmon, Darcee Zeiser, Katelyn Massa, Hailey Wilson and Olivia
Oesterhage.
The Eureka Freshman Boys’ Basketball team celebrated a 17-4 record this season. With numerous illnesses and
injuries throughout the year, it was a total team effort as they took on a next man up mentality. Injuries including
two back injuries, one broken ankle, three ankle sprains, one concussion, and more created an environment where
many guys had to step up and fill the void. As the year went on, the team was best described as a scrappy group
who rarely let any team outplay them. The year culminated with a Championship in an end of the year tournament
where all the Parkway and Rockwood Schools were represented boding well for the future of the Eureka Boys’
Basketball Program.
Players include: Collin Fuqua, Nick Hillyer, Leon Hale, Trevor Heersink, Zach Husman, Drew Albert, Luke Orso, Joey
Owens, Cole Reat, Drew Carter, Tanner Sobotka, Sam Oligschlaeger, Kyle McGeehan, Sean Markley, Jordan Clark,
Austin Crump. Managers: CJ Goebel and Josh Rolfe.

Eureka Rental & Outdoor Power Sales & Service
P A G E 5
Scott Nelson, owner of Eureka Rental, was originally a home builder. Through his experience in that trade he saw
the need for an equipment rental business and took the initiative in 2004 to open Eureka Rental, then located at
the corner of 4th Street and Central Avenue. Business took off from the moment he opened his doors and he
relocated to a space three times larger just behind the Eureka Post Office off of Thresher Drive in Old Town.
Eureka Rental provides almost any piece of outdoor power equipment that you can think of, from large items like
Bobcats, stump grinders, mini excavators and chippers to smaller equipment like lawn mowers (push and riding),
leaf blowers, generators, power washers and chainsaws. Eureka Rental also has ladders for rent. The benefits to
renting a piece of equipment rather than buying are considerable; cost savings on maintenance as well as usage
(the cost of purchasing a log splitter is $2,000 and most people only use them at most twice a year) and it saves on
storage space. Eureka Rental rents items for half days, full days, weeks and for the month. Costs vary, but you
receive a price break the longer you rent the item. Pricing is listed on the company’s website:
www.eurekarental.com or you can call them at 636-938-5533. They will also deliver equipment for a small fee.
Scott has expanded his business from just rentals to include sales and service. He has hired a full-time salesperson
to grow his commercial retail business. Scott shared, “I originally started the business with a primary goal of
providing homeowners with rental equipment, but the outdoor power market has really taken off.” Almost 60% of
his business comes from commercial sales now. He plans to hire three more full-time staff before the summer.
Eureka Rental also provides service for all outdoor power equipment. One of his most popular services is blade
sharpening for lawn mowers and chainsaws. Scott made a considerable investment in an automated sharpener
that sharpens blades perfectly every time. If you own your own lawn care equipment, Scott shared this service
advice: 1) Use a fuel additive and empty the piece of equipment of gasoline before you store it for the winter
2) Use a mid-grade gasoline, the cheap stuff tears away at the engine and drastically reduces the life of your
equipment, and 3) Get a tune-up once a year to take care of your engine and prolong the life of your equipment.
Scott has a database of 15,000 customers and loves to hear that new customers were referred by previous and
current customers. He hopes that you will consider using Eureka Rental for your outdoor needs.
Earthbound Recycling
Earthbound Recycling is located in Eureka just off of Highway 109, but serves the greater
West County area. St. Louis has various companies that accept metals, appliances, electronics and
single-stream items, but Earthbound is the only one that accepts all of these things at one location.
For many business owners and for those who live in apartments who can't get
curb-side recycling, Earthbound Recycling is the only single-stream resource for items
such as paper, chipboard, and tin, plastic and glass containers.
Earthbound is one of the few recycling centers in the region to accept unwanted paint six days a week. There is a
small charge per pound for interior/exterior paint. The center gives away all usable paint to anyone that needs it.
Earthbound Recycling purchases metals to be recycled. "We buy from 1 to 1,000 lbs. of almost any metal a magnet
won't stick to." Recycled metals start getting dismantled in St. Louis, then go to other states.
The center is a free drop-off for computer towers, large metal items, computers, water heaters, cast iron or
galvanized pipe, lawn mowers, bicycles, old cell phones, rechargeable batteries, corrugated cardboard and vinyl
siding. There is a small fee for refrigerators, microwaves, computer monitors and TVs (no charge for flat panel TVs).
Bob Moore, the owner, started Earthbound Recycling after remodeling homes and seeing the enormous amount of
construction waste. "I thought, somebody needs to help out," Moore said. "Then I decided that could be me."
Do your part to help the planet. Earthbound Recycling is located at 25 Truitt Drive, across from Rockwood Bank on
Hwy 109. The center is open from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Saturday, closed only on Sundays; however
single-stream drop-off is available 24 hours a day, year-round. Find out more information online at
Parks Employee Receives Prestigious Award
The Eureka Parks and Recreation Department’s Administrative Assistant, Ann Moore, was
recently awarded the prestigious Musco Give Back Award at the Missouri Park and Recreation
Association Conference. The award is presented to only one individual each year to recognize
“noteworthy contributions in the area of serving the underserved in the community.” Ann
was selected for her selfless service to countless groups in the Eureka community. The
following narrative was read when Ann was presented her award:
“Ann Moore has dedicated her life to serving one undeserved group after another - from
children and the disabled to senior citizens. Ann served the Eureka youth in a myriad of roles
and positions on the school PTO and the Eureka Sports Association for more than a decade
each. She has also volunteered her time with the young women in the Job's Daughters and
Girl Scouts even though her own daughters have outgrown the program.
Ann has been a constant fixture with Eureka Parks and Recreation, volunteering for programs
From left to right: Kristin
Christenson, Ann Moore
and Michael Biedenstein
and events even before the City officially had a department. She served on the Park Board from 1998 to 2012 and only
left when the City offered her a full-time position.
As a volunteer, part-time worker and now full-time Administrative Assistant, she has constantly fought for disabled
individuals in the community. Driven by her passion caring for her husband who has Muscular Dystrophy, she does
everything possible to make certain that all events and construction projects are not just legally accessible, but also
friendly and inviting to all participants.
When Ann took over the struggling Senior Citizen program, the one lunch a month was attracting a mere 20
participants. Less than two years later, 50+ seniors attend lunches twice a month and scores more travel on bus trips
all over the region. Ann was even highlighted in the May 2012 NRPA Magazine for her work with the senior programs.
Ann Moore is the quintessential model employee, generous volunteer, caring friend and active citizen that is a perfect
fit for the Musco Give Back Award.
From all those you have so selflessly helped, Thank You Ann!”
Eureka Competes in Washington, D.C.
Not many people can say they have been directly involved in the excitement
surrounding a Presidential Inauguration. But Eureka High School Band
members can say they have been a part of the celebration in our Nation's
Capitol.
The EHS combined bands went to Washington, DC to participate in the
Heritage Presidential Inauguration Festival at the Chesapeake Performing Arts
Center in Baltimore, Maryland. 121 Eureka High School band students performed along with 40 schools and 2,500
students.
The band left after school on Thursday, January 17th and got back in the afternoon on January 22nd. The Eureka Band
takes a major trip each year to compete and this competition allowed students to not only perform and compete, but
witness a part of our national history as it was being made.
Band Director, John Arata, shared, “We were very fortunate to be able to take the students on a trip where we could
combine music with such a significant event in our Nation’s Capitol. The kids were able to attend the inauguration,
visit Fort McHenry where the Star Spangled Banner was composed and enjoy other great venues. It was a total
educational experience.”
Those attending the festival also went to an awards dinner and ceremony. The Symphonic Band received a gold rating
and also finished 2nd place overall. The combined Concert and Freshman Band received a silver rating. Two students,
Trumpeter, Andy Cox and Flautist, Jessica Bloomrosen, received outstanding soloist awards.
"It was a fantastic trip!" said Nedra Conrad Music Teacher at Geggie Elementary School and mom of a current EHS
band student. "I have gone as chaperone on all of the EHS band trips since my son Matt was a freshman. It is so much
fun to reconnect with my music students from Geggie, now all are grown up and doing so well in high school. I am
proud of them all."

Tara McLain Fine Art Portraiture
Tara was always interested in art in high school. Her favorite subject was pointillism and drawing. After the
birth of her oldest daughter she knew she had to be home with her. Prior to that she worked as a manager
running a retail optical chain.
One day Tara was on the phone doodling and recalled an old drawing book she had. She dug the book out of
storage and opened up a page and started looking at it and recreating the image on a plain piece of printer
paper. Tara’s husband saw the picture and asked her why she never pursued art. Tara explained that her father
discouraged her from pursuing a job in the creative industry, saying there was a reason they called them
"starving artists".
After that day, Tara began researching drawing sites on the Internet. She had always been drawn to black and white photos,
and realism art. This began her passion to draw people. Through her research she came across an artist who wrote a book on
"How to draw Lifelike pencil portraits from Photographs". In the back of the book it had her name and where she was from. It
turned out she was from a town 30 minutes away from Tara. She contacted the author and found out she offered classes. Tara
started going every Tuesday and did a lot of practicing of drawing for other people.
“She was a great inspiration to me as she was licensed with NASCAR to draw their drivers, and on call with America’s Most
Wanted as their lead artist to draw suspects based on witnesses,” Tara shared. This passion streamed into a long list of clients
all over the US who now have Tara’s art of their family hanging on their walls.
A good friend encouraged Tara to get into digital art and through that she needed digital photographs to draw from. She
already had an interest in photography because she was learning to capture her own artwork with a digital camera so she could
start uploading her art to a website. From there, she began offering digital photographs so that she could draw from her own
photos. After realizing with photography she could create her own image and turn that into art, she has traveled down that
path and hasn't looked back!
Tara really loves what she does. She is now a portrait photographer providing photography for seniors, families, children and
real estate. She has also done weddings and commercial work. To view her work please visit www.TaraMcLain.com

Loving Hearts Pet Memorial Opening Soon in Eureka
Pet owners seeking aftercare options in St. Louis will have new choices by this summer. Loving Hearts Pet Memorial Services
is erecting their new building just west of Applebee’s at 1631 West Fifth Street.
Hinsdale Animal Cemetery, owners of an animal crematorium in suburban Chicago along with a family from the Kansas City
area operating a business called Rolling Acres Memory Gardens for Pets, are establishing a location in Eureka to provide
comprehensive services for local pet owners.
Jon Remkus, with Hinsdale Animal Cemetery in Willowbrook, IL, said their family and Nancy and Gary Piper, northwest of
Kansas City, both received requests from pet owners and veterinarians in St. Louis to offer compassionate pet crematory
services. "So we decided to meet in the middle and do this together."
After Eureka was settled on as the location, they went to work on designs for a new retail building, which will offer at-home
memorial items such as engraved river rocks. The new location will not include an actual cemetery, however. Owners said they
plan to look for a more rural setting in the future for a cemetery.
Loving Hearts Pet Memorial Services will be able to handle all pets up to the size of large dogs, including cats, birds, pocket pets
and exotics.
"We are excited to come to Eureka. We intend to be good neighbors, and will run the cleanest, most dignified pet crematorium in
the nation," said Remkus. "We have an open door policy, so if anyone has questions, they can stop by and learn about us, or take
a tour."
To find out more about this new business, please visit their website at www.lovingheartspet.com
Red Door Liquor & Cigars - Update
Red Door Liquor and Cigars will be opening soon in Old Town Eureka. The new building features 2,800 sq.ft. of
retail space that will feature an array of liquors, beers and wine. One of the most unique elements of the space
will be a Cigar Tasting Bar complete with a humidor. The second floor of the building includes two 1,300 sq.ft.
apartments. Each apartment has two bedrooms, a full bath and kitchen as well as separate living rooms. Each
apartment has all new appliances and includes a washer and dryer. If you are interested in finding out more about
the apartments or taking a tour, please call 314-280-4858.
Jimmy John’s - Update
The building is in the middle of a complete transformation. It was literally gutted from floor to roof and
everything is brand new except the building shell and roof joists. Customers will enjoy a clean, bright,
friendly dining experience or a quick order thru the updated drive -through window. The owners think
construction will be completed in March and will be ready, operationally speaking, to open after that. They have
hired their management staff and expect to hire the worker base soon. Jimmy John’s anticipates hiring
approximately 20 people to serve the Eureka Community with "Freaky Fast Gourmet Sandwiches."
The Endangered Wolf Center– You Need to See This Place!
In 1971 the Endangered Wolf
Center was founded when
world-renowned zoologist and star
of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild
Kingdom, Dr. Marlin Perkins, his
wife Carol, and a group of
individuals banded together to
address the plight of endangered
wolves. Today, their nonprofit
organization is considered the
cornerstone of wolf conservation in
America, providing a real
alternative to extinction for
hundreds of wolves and other
canid populations through a
comprehensive program of
e d ucation, beh avioral and
reproductive research and carefully
managed breeding.
Thirty three animals live at the
Center located in Washington
University's Tyson Research Center
just off Interstate 44 at the
Beaumont/Antire Exit, just outside
of Eureka.
Perkins offered some insight into the
site's location in his 1982
a u t o b i o g r a p h y " M y W i l d
Kingdom." He wrote, "We decided
to set up our wolf sanctuary and
study unit in the Tyson Research
Center near St. Louis. The Center
comprises 2,500 acres of rolling,
wooded hills about 30 minutes drive
from St. Louis. During World War
II, it was an army ammunitions
dump, and it has bunkers and some
old railroad tracks. It was and still is
well fenced around the entire
perimeter....It was important for us
to have a secluded place for their
(wolves) protection."
The isolation allows the wolves and
other canids the opportunity to
b e c o m e c a n d i d a t e s f o r
reintroduction into their native
habitats through the coordinated
efforts of the US Fish & Wildlife
Service. The premier facility has
been responsible for successful
m a n a g e d b r e e d i n g a n d
reintroduction programs for the
Mexican Gray Wolf and the Red
Wolf. There are close to 75 Mexican
Gray Wolves in the wild, at one time
there was only five. The Center also
breeds the African Painted Dog,
Maned Wolves and Swift Foxes.
Wolves have puppies at most once a
year, usually in April and May. The
Center is closed these months to
ensure the wolves are not disturbed
during breeding. Four to six
puppies is a common litter for a
wolf.
When the Center was first founded
the focus was on preservation and
outsid e visito rs w ere not
encouraged. With the support of
her Board of Directors, Director,
Jenny Bush, has changed that.
The Center receives no government
funding. Their budget is made up of
donations, membership and
programming. The Center employs
15 staff and has over 100 volunteers.
The Center offers five “Endangered
Preda-Tours’” every weekend , you
need only call ahead (636-938-5900)
to make reservations.
These 90-minute tours are offered at
9:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays,
and at 1 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays
and Sundays.
They also host two evening events:
Wine and Cheese Twilight Howl
This adults-only evening begins at 7
p.m. with a welcome social featuring
a selection of cheese and wine to
help wet your whistle. This program
is offered year-round (except for
April and May) on the first Friday
and third Thursday of each month
at 7 p.m.
Campfire Wolf Howl
This wildly popular all-ages event
offers a howling good time for the
whole family. Gather around a
campfire for some entertaining and
inspiring stories about the legends
and lore of the mysterious wolf.
Afterward, your guide will lead you
on a short walk to an area near the
wolf habitats for the evening's
highlight, our wolf howl! Refer to
the Event Calendar online for dates.
Summer Camps are another way the
Center serves the community.
C a m p e r s w i l l e x p l o r e t h e
misunderstood world of wolves. They
will hike to a cave, learn how to track
a wolf, participate in a creek walk,
cool off on water day, and much more.
In September the Center hosts Wolf
Fest. This year’s event is on
September 28th. The event serves as
an open house for the Center. The
charge is $25 a car load.
Tours and events range in prices,
but all are very affordable and
worth the cost to see such amazing
animals in a natural setting.

HOLIDAY INN-6 FLAGS
The Holiday Inn has a long history of being a stopping place for weary travelers.
At the turn of the 19th century, Native Americans wanted a stable source of water in times
of drought. They dug deep springs on the present siteof the Holiday Inn at Six Flags.
Over the next fifty years, as stagecoach travel increased, the land became known as the
Deep Springs Stage Stop. It was an oasis, literally, a welcome, restful spot on the road.
Travelers enjoyed their first “good water” after leaving the city of St. Louis.
In the meantime, St. Louis’ population grew and many impoverished people began to
move West. To help ease some of the problems, the county purchased the land and laid it
out to build the “St. Louis County Poor Farm”. Irish stone masons were employed to
build a large rock building intended for a dormitory. The original structure, a two story
L-shaped barn with handcrafted limestone walls up to 36 inches thick, still stands today
and serves as the center of the complex, housing the HayMarket Restaurant, and spacious
meeting, convention and banquet facilities.
The construction of the building progressed slowly and then stopped altogether during the Civil War. In 1894, an eminent St. Louis
veterinarian, Dr. Charles Crowley, bought the land and converted the barn into an up-to-date “horse hospital”, boarding stables and a
horse stock farm which bred many fine race horses.
After Dr. Crowley’s death in the 1930’s, the land changed hands several
times. For a period the barn housed the champion sire Bar Money. Horse
enthusiasts still visit the hotel to this day to see where this magnificent
animal spent time.
The Deep Springs site was purchased by the Eckelkamp family in 1975
because of its proximity to Six Flags-St. Louis. At that time there were
very few hotels in the area and with the success of the theme park they
deemed this a great location for a new hotel. The Ecklelkamps also own
the Diamond Inn in Gray Summit. Construction completed on the resort
facility that we now know in 1981 and the hotel opened first as a Ramada
Inn and then underwent a complete property renovation in 2003 and
changed to a Holiday Inn.
With the loss of industry, such as the Chrysler Plant, and the addition of
theme parks and attractions such as Branson, hotel staff have worked to
find additional revenue streams. The hotel added an outdoor dog show
arena and converted an existing building into a dog grooming facility. Shows make use of the designated dog show site and dog
grooming facility, then host the after-show banquet in one of the spacious banquet rooms.
Mike Klenke, Holiday Inn General Manager, said, “Adding the show arena and making the hotel a dog friendly venue has been a
tremendous success for us. We have hosted more than 60 dog shows in the past 15 years. We also enjoy an extremely close working
relationship with Purina Farms who recently completed a state-of-the-art indoor facility for dog sports. We are listed as Purina’s
preferred host hotel for every show.”
Dog shows are big business. Every breed has a National Specialty Show.
The associations used to host shows alternating venues on the East Coast,
Central US and then West Coast, but now book shows at locations for three
years in a row. These groups typically stay for four or more days. Purina
recently hosted the Golden Retriever Show and booked every room in the
hotel.
The hotel also works closely with local tourist attractions such as the Hidden
Valley Ski Resort, which draws a huge following from the Memphis area,
and Six Flags-St. Louis. The hotel is very family friendly, especially to its
youngest guests. Kids under 19 stay free with a paying adult and they eat
free (up to three with a paying adult) at the HayMarket restaurant located in
the hotel. If that wasn’t enough, the hotel features a 60,000 gallon heated
swimming pool and kiddie pool, a 5,000 gallon whirlpool, sauna, Terrace
Bar, Pizza Corner and an arcade with video games, a pool table and shuffleboard.
The next time you have out of town guests, are planning an event or need a ‘stay’cation, consider the Holiday Inn at Six Flags...with
over 200 years of experience of taking care of travelers, you know you’ll be in good hands.

Eureka’s Good Earth Garden Club
Ralph Samples, a member of the Eureka Garden Club, was once asked to
describe the Club’s demographics and he simply said, “Old”. This was a few
years back and the Club’s membership was dwindling due to an aging
membership base and lackluster programming...but Doris Samples couldn’t let
the Club fold.
“Ralph and I are passionate about gardening and nature. We love Eureka and
felt like the Club could be a great service to the community.”
This “can do” attitude landed Doris the role of club President and she along
with the other Club members, have worked hard to revive the Club and beautify the City through their gardening efforts.
The Club maintains one of the Old Town Gardens (their garden is directly in front of Dr. Boschert’s office on Central
Avenue). They are also working to renovate and maintain the Linda Crawford Memorial garden located in the Elk Trail
Subdivision; Linda was a founding member of the Club which began in 1977.
Doris shared three goals she has for the Club: Increase membership, increase the Club’s visibility around Eureka and create
more dynamic programming for the members.
The Club began working with the City for its annual Easter Egg Hunt. They also built, painted and installed five bluebird
houses along the Berry Park Trail. They are increasing efforts to make their meetings more informational and fun for the
members. In February they held an English Tea Party which attracted three new members, possibly a fourth. Twice a year
they have meetings at the library that are open to the public. In June, they host a garden tour and salad supper where
members bring vegetables from their respective gardens to create the main course.
The Garden Club’s annual membership dues are $20.00 and half of those dues go to two National Garden Clubs of which the
Club is a member. The Club also receives some funding from the City of Eureka through the Old Town Garden project.
Every other year they host a plant sale that coincides with The Legends Subdivision garage sale.
The Club does their part to give back to the community. Club members bring food items to meetings to donate to the Eureka
Food Pantry. They also use some of their dues to make a cash donation. Doris shared, “We have a tight budget, but there is
a lot of need in these times. We want to give back as much as we can.”
If you would like more information about the Eureka Good Earth Garden Club please send an email to
goodearthgdnclub-eureka@yahoo.com or call Doris or Ralph Samples at 636-938-7400. Beware, their love for gardening
and nature is infectious...don’t be surprised if your “green thumb” starts twitching!
