WORTH NOTING<br />

Oncology Research Initiatives<br />

In the strategic planning work done by U.Va.<br />

faculty in recent years, the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong><br />

identified oncology as one area where investments<br />

would be made to grow viable and<br />

productive research and education programs,<br />

especially in light <strong>of</strong> the disease demographics<br />

and given the existing strengths for<br />

this important field at U.Va.<br />

Recent select achievements show the<br />

range <strong>of</strong> work conducted by faculty in<br />

oncology.<br />

Patricia Hollen, the Malvina Yuille Boyd<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Oncology <strong>Nursing</strong>, recently<br />

received a $455,000 grant from the NINR for a<br />

two-year study on “A Decision-Making Aid for<br />

Patients with Advanced Lung Cancer.” That is<br />

just one <strong>of</strong> many grants she has received for<br />

cancer treatment.<br />

In the Rural Health Care Research Center,<br />

Bonnie Jerome D’Emilia is leading a pilot<br />

study called “Mammography Screening in<br />

Rural African-American Populations.”<br />

Drs. Barbara Parker, Rick Steeves, and<br />

Kathryn Laughon are conducting a study<br />

called the “Breast Cancer Survivor Study.” Their<br />

focus is on women in abusive relationships<br />

who are diagnosed with breast cancer as they<br />

examine the intertwined effects <strong>of</strong> one issue<br />

upon the other.<br />

Jeanne Erickson, a clinical instructor who<br />

is working on her doctorate in oncology at<br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Utah, is involved in a study<br />

called MoST (a Month <strong>of</strong> Symptoms in Teens)<br />

to learn more about symptoms <strong>of</strong> fatigue and<br />

sleep disturbances in teenagers receiving<br />

chemotherapy.<br />

Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Susan Kennel has a<br />

small grant subcontracted from the National<br />

Cancer Institute to study “Cranial Stimulation<br />

for Chemotherapy Symptoms in Breast<br />

Cancer.”<br />

Faculty Achievements<br />

Burns<br />

Suzanne Burns (BSN ’85, MSN ’88, FNP<br />

’96) was inducted as a fellow <strong>of</strong> the<br />

American Academy <strong>of</strong> Nurse<br />

Practitioners (AANP). The fellows <strong>of</strong> the<br />

AANP are a distinct group <strong>of</strong> nurse practitioner<br />

leaders who have contributed to<br />

health care through clinical practice,<br />

research, education, or policy.<br />

Burns, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> nursing<br />

and Clinician 5 in the medical center, is<br />

an expert in critical care and the care <strong>of</strong><br />

patients with pulmonary diseases. She is<br />

known for her work in the area <strong>of</strong><br />

mechanical ventilation and weaning and<br />

she has published and lectured widely on<br />

those and other related topics.<br />

Dorothy Tullmann was a scholar in the<br />

2005 Geriatric <strong>Nursing</strong> Research<br />

Scholars Program funded by the John<br />

A. Hartford Foundation Institute for<br />

Geriatric <strong>Nursing</strong>, part <strong>of</strong> the New<br />

York <strong>University</strong> Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>.<br />

Selected for both her significant<br />

research in gerontologic nursing and for<br />

her strong leadership potential, she is<br />

one <strong>of</strong> eleven nurses selected from a<br />

national pool <strong>of</strong> outstanding candidates.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Mikel Gray was appointed editorin-chief<br />

for the Journal <strong>of</strong> Wound, Ostomy<br />

and Continence <strong>Nursing</strong>. He has also been<br />

appointed to the Scope and Severity<br />

Panel for Urinary Incontinence for the<br />

Center for Medicare and Medicaid<br />

Service.<br />

At the 2005 conference <strong>of</strong> the International<br />

Society <strong>of</strong> Psychiatric Nurses,<br />

Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Catherine Kane received<br />

the prestigious Melva Jo Hendrix<br />

Lectureship Award. The award was established<br />

to “recognize psychiatric-mental<br />

health nurses whose careers exemplify<br />

Dr. Hendrix’s values and principles, her<br />

unswerving commitment to improving<br />

care for the underserved, stigmatized, or<br />

disenfranchised, and her dedication to<br />

mentoring others.”<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Barbara Parker, director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

doctoral program, now holds the Theresa<br />

A. Thomas Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship.<br />
