FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL<br />

How fast is Term 3 flying by!!! We have a number of school events<br />

happening over <strong>th</strong>e next few weeks. Students have begun preparing<br />

<strong>th</strong>eir acts for our famous <strong>Brigidine</strong> Has Talent which happens on <strong>th</strong>e<br />

last day of <strong>th</strong>is term.<br />

Preparations are well and truly under way for Year 12 and <strong>th</strong>eir final<br />

week of school. Even <strong>th</strong>ough <strong>th</strong>is is exciting, it is a little sad as well.<br />

The Year 11 students will begin <strong>th</strong>eir exams for <strong>th</strong>e end of <strong>th</strong>eir<br />

Preliminary HSC course. Year 10 will have Trial School Certificate tests.<br />

This will be <strong>th</strong>e last year of <strong>th</strong>e School Certificate. We are still waiting<br />

to learn what <strong>th</strong>e alternate credential will be. Our Year 9 and 10<br />

leaders will be taking part in <strong>th</strong>e Sydney Alliance Forum which is all<br />

about building a strong civil society. This will be a great experience for<br />

<strong>th</strong>e girls.<br />

As you can see it certainly is a busy time and amidst all of <strong>th</strong>is<br />

busyness I encourage all <strong>th</strong>e students to remain focussed on <strong>th</strong>eir<br />

work and continue to do <strong>th</strong>eir best in all <strong>th</strong>ey do. Students must<br />

always work to achieve <strong>th</strong>eir full potential. Realistic high expectations<br />

always need to be supported by positive reinforcement if we are to<br />

keep all our students motivated to continue to strive for <strong>th</strong>eir personal<br />

best (PB) in all <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>ey do.<br />

Managing Challenging Behaviours<br />

Managing challenging behaviours as parents and as teachers can be<br />

demanding and difficult at <strong>th</strong>e best of times. There are many <strong>th</strong>eories<br />

and models around <strong>th</strong>at can offer constructive recommendations and<br />

assistance. One such model is using <strong>th</strong>e restorative principles and<br />

practices. The principles guide how you speak and how you act<br />

towards o<strong>th</strong>ers.


Ted Watchel, President of <strong>th</strong>e International Institute for Restorative Practices, Pennsylvannia states: “The<br />

fundamental unifying hypo<strong>th</strong>esis of restorative practices is disarmingly simple: <strong>th</strong>at human beings are<br />

happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes in behaviour when<br />

<strong>th</strong>ose in positions of au<strong>th</strong>ority do <strong>th</strong>ings wi<strong>th</strong> <strong>th</strong>em, ra<strong>th</strong>er <strong>th</strong>an to <strong>th</strong>em or for <strong>th</strong>em. This hypo<strong>th</strong>esis<br />

maintains <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>e punitive and au<strong>th</strong>oritarian to mode and <strong>th</strong>e permissive and paternalistic for mode are<br />

not as effective as <strong>th</strong>e restorative, participatory, engaging wi<strong>th</strong> mode. If <strong>th</strong>is restorative hypo<strong>th</strong>esis is valid,<br />

<strong>th</strong>en it has significant implications for many disciplines.”<br />

The restorative principles emphasise <strong>th</strong>ree principles of fair process:<br />

Engagement – involving individuals in decisions <strong>th</strong>at affect <strong>th</strong>em by listening to <strong>th</strong>eir views and genuinely<br />

taking <strong>th</strong>eir opinions into account.<br />

Explanation – explaining <strong>th</strong>e reasoning behind a decision to everyone who has been involved or who is<br />

affected by it.<br />

Expectation clarity – making sure <strong>th</strong>at everyone clearly understands a decision and what is expected of<br />

<strong>th</strong>em in <strong>th</strong>e future.<br />

Using <strong>th</strong>e restorative principles can provide <strong>th</strong>e motivation to make relationships work, a fundamental<br />

requirement of building and maintaining a safe and caring environment at home and at school. The use of<br />

<strong>th</strong>e restorative affective questions can contribute towards a common language and practice in everyday<br />

interactions, not just to challenge behaviour. This practice is respectful and inclusive, wi<strong>th</strong> a focus on<br />

fostering heal<strong>th</strong>y relationships at home and at school.<br />

These affective questions are:<br />

What happened?<br />

How did it happen?<br />

How did you act in <strong>th</strong>is situation?<br />

Who do you <strong>th</strong>ink was affected?<br />

How were <strong>th</strong>ey affected?<br />

How were you affected?<br />

What needs to happen to make <strong>th</strong>ings right?<br />

If <strong>th</strong>e same situation happens again how could you behave differently?<br />

The aim of using <strong>th</strong>ese questions is to<br />

Focus on <strong>th</strong>e specific behaviour or incident wi<strong>th</strong>out blaming;<br />

Draw out who was affected and how <strong>th</strong>ey were affected; and<br />

Direct questions toward problem solving.<br />

Uniform<br />

The girls look very smart in <strong>th</strong>eir Winter Uniform when worn correctly. Some of <strong>th</strong>e girls need to be<br />

reminded <strong>th</strong>at make-up is not to be worn wi<strong>th</strong> <strong>th</strong>e school uniform, and <strong>th</strong>at excess jewellery (beyond <strong>th</strong>at<br />

permitted in <strong>th</strong>e <strong>College</strong> Diary) will be confiscated. When travelling to and from school <strong>th</strong>e blazer<br />

must be worn. The navy blue <strong>College</strong> jumper is not worn to and from school unless it is<br />

under <strong>th</strong>e blazer during winter.


Finally as our next newsletter is not until <strong>th</strong>e end of week 8, I would like to take <strong>th</strong>is opportunity to wish all<br />

our fa<strong>th</strong>ers a very HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.<br />

Wi<strong>th</strong> many <strong>th</strong>anks to all parents for <strong>th</strong>e support you give to your daughter’s education at <strong>Brigidine</strong>.<br />

NSW SCHOOLS’ TITRATION COMPETITION<br />

The final results have come in from <strong>th</strong>e NSW Titration Competition, which was held in May <strong>th</strong>is year. We<br />

entered 7 teams of 3 at <strong>th</strong>e Moriah <strong>College</strong> venue.<br />

Our most successful team was Anjali Thakur, Alex Svejkar, and Chanelle Whitty, wi<strong>th</strong> a combined error<br />

score of 100. This earned <strong>th</strong>is team a Certificate of Excellence. Congratulations and well done!<br />

Two teams gained Certificates of Merit: Bronte Courtney, Rebecca Lockett and Suzy Ihar (score 114) and<br />

Caroline Cham, Jessica Chan and Claire Mahendradatta (score 171).<br />

Unfortunately, none of our teams made it into <strong>th</strong>e National Titration Championships <strong>th</strong>is year.<br />

However, <strong>th</strong>ree of our girls achieved very well individually.<br />

Rebecca Lockett had a perfect score of zero – in o<strong>th</strong>er words, her analysis of <strong>th</strong>e unknown solution was<br />

perfectly accurate – no error! What a fantastic achievement!<br />

Jessica Chan had an error score of 1, and Bella Poidevin’s error score was only 16. Congratulations on<br />

your great work!<br />

The challenge is now out for next year’s Titration competition. Year 11 chemists take note!!<br />

YEARS 9-12 NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS<br />

It has become apparent <strong>th</strong>at a significant number of students are not exercising <strong>th</strong>e full duty of care<br />

expected when using <strong>th</strong>e notebook computers issued as part of <strong>th</strong>e Government's "Education Revolution"<br />

roll out.<br />

Students are expected to keep <strong>th</strong>eir laptop secure when at school, making sure it is locked in <strong>th</strong>eir locker<br />

when not in use and not leave it in <strong>th</strong>e yard unattended. All students have a school locker and are expected<br />

to have a school issued combination lock on <strong>th</strong>at locker. Unfortunately some<br />

notebook computers have been found recently left at risk of <strong>th</strong>eft and damage, left out of <strong>th</strong>e locker or in<br />

an unlocked locker.<br />

Teachers report <strong>th</strong>at some students are not bo<strong>th</strong>ering to bring <strong>th</strong>eir notebook to school when it is<br />

required for use in various lessons. Some are not using <strong>th</strong>e hard shell protective case as<br />

advised, wi<strong>th</strong> <strong>th</strong>e result <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>ere have recently been many cracked screens, which<br />

are a costly and inconvenient to replace.


As most parents of students in Years 9-12 signed an agreement indicating <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>ey would ensure <strong>th</strong>eir<br />

daughter used and cared for <strong>th</strong>e notebooks properly, we would be grateful if parents and guardians could<br />

support <strong>th</strong>e <strong>College</strong> by regularly reviewing <strong>th</strong>e care and use of machine(s) allotted to <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Brigidine</strong><br />

student(s) in <strong>th</strong>eir family. Please make sure <strong>th</strong>at cases are used, no unau<strong>th</strong>orised stickers or graffiti deface<br />

<strong>th</strong>e machine and <strong>th</strong>at it is kept secure.<br />

Earlier <strong>th</strong>is year new batteries were ordered so <strong>th</strong>at all Year 12s could swap exhausted batteries for a new<br />

one at no charge. It is most disappointing <strong>th</strong>at almost half <strong>th</strong>e batteries are still waiting to be<br />

claimed.<br />

We have found <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>e students who do <strong>th</strong>e right <strong>th</strong>ing; use <strong>th</strong>eir case and proper charging procedures;<br />

bring <strong>th</strong>eir notebook each day; get a relatively trouble free life from it and benefit greatly from <strong>th</strong>is useful<br />

study tool.<br />

The Annual Art Exhibition is on again. Opening is next Wednesday night so dress up and enjoy a special<br />

evening on <strong>th</strong>e school calendar. Entry is free so families can attend. The Lateens provide musical<br />

entertainment <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>e night and <strong>th</strong>ere is food and drink available. Parking is FREE in <strong>th</strong>e car park if<br />

tickets are validated by Mrs McGahan during <strong>th</strong>e evening. As <strong>th</strong>ere is no parking on school grounds nor is<br />

<strong>th</strong>ere access to <strong>th</strong>e school <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>e car park, parents will need to walk around via <strong>th</strong>e shops and enter<br />

<strong>th</strong>e school <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>e small lane (Brigid Lane) parallel to Synan hall.<br />

The visual achievers of <strong>th</strong>e school look forward to your attendance. There will be a message board for you<br />

to express your ideas about <strong>th</strong>eir artwork. Everyone is a critic so please support <strong>th</strong>is wonderful night.<br />

YEAR 9 MADNESS DAY<br />

Madness day <strong>2011</strong> was an enjoyable experience for <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Brigidine</strong> girls as we learned so much about ourselves<br />

and each o<strong>th</strong>er. It was a truly eye opening experience full of inspiring speakers, new friends and solutions to<br />

<strong>th</strong>e problems which are facing our generation.<br />

We learnt <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>ere is no need <strong>th</strong>at should be ignored and how working as a community can achieve much<br />

more <strong>th</strong>an as individuals. The ga<strong>th</strong>ering of bo<strong>th</strong> Eastern and Western schools made us recognise <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>e<br />

Ca<strong>th</strong>olic community is strong and we can rely on one and o<strong>th</strong>er despite our postcodes.<br />

YEAR 11 BUSINESS SERVICES<br />

Congratulations to all of <strong>th</strong>e year 11 Business Services students who have just completed <strong>th</strong>eir week out on<br />

work placement at a variety of business enterprises bo<strong>th</strong> in <strong>th</strong>e local area as well as in <strong>th</strong>e city. Some of<br />

our students also backed up after completing a week doing <strong>th</strong>eir Hospitality work placement as well.<br />

Thank you so much to all of <strong>th</strong>e employers for mentoring our students and to all of <strong>th</strong>e students who<br />

represented <strong>th</strong>e college so well wi<strong>th</strong> many glowing reports coming back from <strong>th</strong>eir employers. Some of our<br />

students liked work placement so much <strong>th</strong>ey weren’t looking forward to coming back to school but o<strong>th</strong>ers<br />

couldn’t wait to be back wi<strong>th</strong> <strong>th</strong>eir friends.<br />

Overall, it is a learning experience for all of <strong>th</strong>ese students and has built upon <strong>th</strong>e skills <strong>th</strong>at <strong>th</strong>ey learn here<br />

at school and has built <strong>th</strong>eir confidence about <strong>th</strong>eir skills and abilities in <strong>th</strong>e practical aspects of <strong>th</strong>e course.<br />

CGSSSA DANCE<br />

This year we will be entering <strong>th</strong>ree teams in <strong>th</strong>e CGSSSA Dance Championships; in Jazz, Tap and Hip Hop. In<br />

order to raise money for <strong>th</strong>e costumes, we will be holding a cake stall on Tuesday 30 <strong>Aug</strong>ust, so please<br />

bring along some extra money on <strong>th</strong>is day to help support <strong>th</strong>e girls.<br />

SPORTS AWARDS<br />

The Annual Sport Awards will be held on Tuesday 6 September at 11.45amd to 12.45pm in <strong>th</strong>e Cullen<br />

Centre.<br />

Students who have represented <strong>th</strong>e school in CGSSSA Teams <strong>th</strong>at have successfully gained a place in <strong>th</strong>e<br />

Championships will be recognised for <strong>th</strong>eir achievements along wi<strong>th</strong> <strong>th</strong>e Outstanding Team Members for<br />

each sport and <strong>th</strong>e Junior and Senior Sports Champions. All students are expected to wear correct school<br />

uniform or sport uniform if <strong>th</strong>ey are receiving an award. Parents are most welcome to attend <strong>th</strong>is Awards<br />

Ceremony<br />

SYDNEY KINGS VISIT BRIGIDINE<br />

On Monday 19 September <strong>th</strong>e Sydney Kings Basketball Team will be visiting <strong>Brigidine</strong> to play against our<br />

team <strong>th</strong>at will be competing in <strong>th</strong>e National Basketball Championships in December at Bendigo. The event<br />

is called “So You Think You Can Play” and it will be used as a fundraiser to assist <strong>th</strong>e team wi<strong>th</strong> travel<br />

expenses. The game will be played from 2pm to 3pm and all Year 7 and &ear 8 are invited to attend.<br />

Students who are attending are asked to donate a Gold Coin on <strong>th</strong>e day. So make sure you remember to<br />

bring your coin along so you can support <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Brigidine</strong> Team and cheer <strong>th</strong>em along to hopefully give <strong>th</strong>e<br />

Kings a run for <strong>th</strong>eir money.<br />

Congratulations to Hannah Denney who competed in <strong>th</strong>e Australian Road Walking Championships in<br />

Canberra. She came 8 <strong>th</strong> in <strong>th</strong>e U18 5km road walk. What an incredible achievement for a young girl in Year<br />

10.<br />

Congratulations to Rachel Howard Year 12, who competed in <strong>th</strong>e Australian Cross Country Championships<br />

in Canberra.<br />

CGSSSA ATHLETICS <strong>2011</strong><br />

On Friday 19 <strong>Aug</strong>ust, 33 <strong>Brigidine</strong> students participated in <strong>th</strong>e CGSSSA A<strong>th</strong>letics Carnival held at Sydney<br />

International A<strong>th</strong>letics Centre, Homebush. We entered in bo<strong>th</strong> Track and Field events and achieved<br />

fantastic results as well as gaining 3 rd overall in division 1 for <strong>th</strong>e second year in a row!<br />

The standard at <strong>th</strong>e Carnival was very high. On <strong>th</strong>e day <strong>th</strong>e girls were energetic and showed great<br />

sportsmanship and encouragement to all team competitors. Despite <strong>th</strong>e tough competition, many girls<br />

managed to still place in various events and came home wi<strong>th</strong> many ribbons and medals.<br />
