MOOSE. We are planning to use Angus Air’s new super cub to fly
into some areas we have been unable to hunt. The West Coal and
can still fit a couple hunters in for next fall.
GRIZZLY. I am looking for two hunters who are willing to camp
out, hike and generally enjoy a tough hunt. Dates are approximately
April 26 to May 5 and May 8 to 18. I will be personally guiding these
hunts.
WOLF AND LYNX. We still have a few openings in Feb for those
who want both wolf and lynx and in March for those who just
need a wolf. We have built some new cabins so will be going into
It seems a bit early to start writing this newsletter but we will be taking
part of the crew hunting in early November so I sit looking out our window at an
unfrozen lake with a beautiful sunrise instead of one with ice and snow.
2004 was a good year overall, no major mishaps, good hunters and average
game. The exception was sheep. We had our best ever year for sheep. All four
were tremendous rams with a 39 5/8 and a 42 2/8 taking the top spots. There
was an even longer horned ram with the 42 but he had less than 14
inch bases so we let him go. More on him later.
Our winter wolf hunts were a great
success. Up first was Leonard Weigan.
On day one we were following wolf
tracks near Bobs Canyon and then
we were after them. The deep
snow made it hard running
and also hard shooting but
a big black bit the snow.
Next up was Joe Greenhaw
and Kevin Weidner. Joel and
Kevin had a couple close calls
but the wolves won. Joe and I had
machine trouble and were working
on them when a wolf howled. We took
off on my “cat” and caught two wolves on the
river one of which is now in Joe’s trophy room. The
last wolf hunter was Don Hipzer. We hunted hard but
were not able to shot one though we did pick up four in
snares and traps. All told we took 7 wolves and 5 lynx.
The rest of March and April was spent cutting
firewood, building and fixing up cabins including one
on the Rock which was used for hunting this fall and
another on the mid Coal which will be used for wolf
hunting this winter and moose next fall.
May 13 th had Bruce Dunbar and Robbie out after grizzly. They got to
see 4 but none were quite big enough so were left to grow. I then took John
Malloy into Wolf Dens camp. This is normally a high density area but we hunted
for 10 days and never seen a bear on the river. This was their breeding time so
they were up in the mountains but we were unable to walk up after them.
After Joel returned from New Zealand in June we went way up the
Rock and built him a cabin. We are looking to get an air strip up there so we
can moose hunt it. We also finished the cabin at Lotz Creek and got it all set up
for the fall hunt.
We trailed horses in in early July but I didn’t even get out to Ceaser till the
19 th . Michael, Jim Ross (our new wrangler) and I took Robert Strebel, Christine,
Yves and Wolf into the Luxury Camp country and made a trail over a pass so we
can now hunt a whole new area. It will be great for goat, caribou, moose, grizzly
and hopefully sheep. Wanna be the first, book now for the second hunt in 05.
Ralph Mersdorf, Paul Malisky and Jean and Yves Queau were the
first hunters. Jean was first with a nice goat. Ralph and Paul were
a day late getting their gear to Watson so spent
Aug 1 st moving to camp. 10 minutes into the
hunt Ralph and I had our ram spotted.
10 hours later most of which was
spent stalking in the drifting fog
Ralph took a 175 yard shot and
had his ram. It was 42 2/8 by
40 2/8 with 14 ½ inch bases
and scored 172. There were
7 rams in the group, 3 others
were legal including one that
I think would go 43 or 44 but
with 13 inch basis. Michael then
got Yves a nice 10 ½ year old ram
and a caribou. Donn and Paul took a
heavily broomed ram as well.
Joel, Michael and Brian teamed up next to
get Bo Torrino an nice goat while Donn, Jim and I worked
on a sheep for Ritchie Terranova. We were hoping to find
the 43 inch ram from the first hunt but found a 39 7/8
ram instead. It took us two days to move the ram to a
place where we could get Ritchie and then one good
shot. Ritchie also took the only wolverine of the year.
Next up were Richard and Oliver Daly with Donn
and Brian and John van Eton with Joel and Michael. John
took a beautiful 449 SCI point caribou with his bow the first day and our biggest
goat of the year a couple days later. Oliver nailed a nice billy the first clear day of
his hunt and his dad took a bigger one on day 7. We all moved to Wolf Dens and
unsuccessfully hunted moose to kill some time till they flew out early.
Donn and Brian then moved to Twin Lakes where Mark Stevens and
Allan Wigand joined them for caribou. They both were successful and caught an
early plane out. Joel and Michael were guiding Brian Parrish and Ken Lande at
this time. They took a 387 and 400 point caribou, the biggest of the season in
the B&C scoring system.
Adolfo Cordova and Mark George then joined Donn and Brian. The weather
turned bad forcing them to move down to Wolf Dens where Adolfo took an old
58 inch bull. Mark and Brian got snowed out of the caribou country and couldn’t
come up with a moose.
Richard Petrinni and Ken Lanier took the last horse hunt. Michael
and Brian worked their butts off but couldn’t come up with a
decent moose. We moved to the Coal River cabin which
normally has lots of moose but hardly found a fresh track
so we moved to Ceaser and could only find a couple
small bulls and very few caribou. We obviously had
moved the wrong direction but I guess that’s hunting.
Not what I wanted but it does happen.
The horses were trailed out on the 28 th and they
were all in winter pasture by the 30 th .
BOAT HUNTS
The moose decided to play hard to find
this year. Some bulls even ran from a cow
call on the 2 nd hunt which is highly unusual
and quite embarrassing to the guide. We did
manage 100% in spite of this and all but one
animal was trophy sized.
PHYLLIS’S CABIN, Robbie took 3 moose
for three hunters here this fall. JoAnne Ulick
was up first and not only took the biggest
moose but also the first wolf a female which
is even better. Bill Mackay was next with a nice bull
and Tyler Pearson took the last one.(Craig brought
his son and daughter hunting. Robbie was the
privileged guide helped out by James, Dave
O’Farrell’s son)
JOEL CREEK, Walter hunted Joel Creek for two
hunts taking a beautiful 55 inch bull for John Penek .
John Maul was next taking by mistake a 45 inch bull but
then was able to take a big boar grizzly and a wolf. Robbie then
guided Brianna Pierson the youngest hunter(13) of the year to a huge old 59
½ inch bull.
ROCK RIVER, We have been hunting wolves in this area for several years and
finally put a cabin up so we could hunt moose. Dave was the priviledged person
taking George Faigle and Ernest Skaggs in. Both took nice bulls and saw quite
a few others.
We will probably hunt it again next year with even better results as we know
more about the area.
TAMARACK LAKE. Joel took two hunters there this fall. First up was Tom and
Linda Veurink and he took a beauty on the first day. They spent the rest of the
hunt watching many bulls and have a huge bull on video. Dennis Reiman
was the second hunter. The weather turned cool so Joel had to
break ice up to the moose kill but the grizzly that had taken
over the carcass had left. They got back just in time to
catch a plane back to town and then went up to Joel
creek where Dennis got the second biggest bull of the
year. We are going to hunt Tamarack Lake earlier next
year plus cut trails to other lakes in the area. This will
make it a hot spot.
GUSTY LAKES. Donn got to try out this
lake for the first time this year. For his first
boat hunt Donn had tried to get a huge bull
on the upper Hyland but got caught in the
middle of a dry (as in no moose) spell so
had headed down to Taffie Creek where Jeff
Sangster took the wrong bull. Fresh from this
he flew into Lotz with David Koening. They
got a nice 53 inch bull the second day.
LOTZ LAKE. Michael and Richard hunted
this lake taking a bull on the first day. We
will have to cut trail into some swamp and
meadows for next year. This will turn this
area into a great moose camp.
BEAVER RIVER, Hurricane Ivan caused the first
hunter to cancel leaving Ralph with only a father
and son. David Jr. took a very heavy bull the first
day and then David senior took over. They saw
over 50 bulls but were having too much fun to end
it with a dead moose. They took a bull on the last day
which they are getting Ralph to carve the antlers for a
very unique trophy.
TOOBALLY LAKES. Dave and Walter took Steve Rider and Tom Benson into
our bow only area. Dave and Steve took the best scoring bull of the season while
fighting with another bull. Once it was down the 2 nd bull charged Dave and Steve.
It was a very tense few minutes with a big bull 5 yards away and only a bow for
protection. Walter and Tom hunted hard for many days with no luck finally taking
a 56 inch bull that had been all beat up on the 5 th day. Thus ending 2004.
