RACING IS VITAL TO THE CONTINUED DE- 

VELOPMENT OF THE S 1000 RR AND HOW 

PROUD HE IS OF THE WHOLE TEAM BEHIND 

THE “RR” PROJECT… 

What have been the major learning points for 

you in your debut year as BMW Motorrad’s 

Motorsport Director? 

We are all learning together. We have two very different 

riders who demand different things in order 

to get the best performance on track, so we work 

very hard to give them the tools they need to do the 

job. We are also constantly striving to become more 

competitive, but the problem is that everybody is attempting 

to do the same thing, so it’s a real race 

in terms of development and a matter of who can 

develop the fastest and move to the front. 

How proud is everyone at BMW of the 

success of the RR in the marketplace? 

Everyone at BMW is very proud of what we have 

created. The RR was a step into an unknown area 

for us – sports bikes – where the likes of Honda, 

Yamaha, Suzuki and Ducati have dominated for 

the last 20 years. We wanted to build a bike that 

you could instantly ride – regardless of your ability 

– and feel comfortable doing so. This motorcycle 

incorporates all the technological ingredients like 

traction control and ABS to make you feel at ease 

with the machine, despite the engine power, while 

still appealing to advanced riders purely because of 

its performance. In my opinion, BMW has created a 

very special motorcycle. 

What has been your measure of just how good 

the RR series production actually is? 

We assess the success of the RR on the basis of 

both sales figures and track performance. In its first 

year on sale the RR won 14 national championships, 

which is a truly amazing feat. We also entered the 

WSBK championship as it is the ultimate test for any 

production motorcycle and it is important that RR 

customers see their bike being tested and developed 

on track. In terms of sales figures, we knew we 

were stepping into a new segment and one which 

has been decreasing in size over recent years, but 

we still managed to become market leader in most 

countries around the world. 

Is there a more competitive racing series on 

the planet than WSBK? 

This series is undoubtedly tough. We stepped in 

three years ago with a brand new machine and 

team, to try to challenge manufacturers and teams 

that have been in this paddock for the last 20 years. 

We are definitely still playing catch-up and have 

made good progress, but so has everybody else. We 

need to continue working to improve the package 

we have and develop our knowledge so we can be 

out there winning races. 

But you must be pleased at how quickly the 

BMW teams have become competitive? 

Everyone involved with this project has been working 

very hard to try to develop and progress at a 

good rate so we can challenge at the highest level, 

but every other team is also raising its game, so it’s 

not easy. We have found that our bike and riders 

seem to adapt better to some tracks than others and 

now we are looking at making the bike work regardless 

of the track layout or rider preference. So yes, 

we have done a good job, but we have big expectations 

from this project, so I am pushing to ensure 

we continue to work harder than ever until we reach 

our goals. 

Will future RR owners benefit from direct 

improvements due to racing activities? 

We work with all areas of the series development 

team and always feed back detailed information. For 

example, we often speak with project managers and 

those responsible for the chassis, engine, electronics 

and ignition, and relay our findings so the next 

generation of products benefit from what we have 

discovered. The racing environment naturally tests 

all our components to extremes, so this information 

gets funnelled back into the team. It is our job to ensure 

that the RR evolves, and passing on information 

is key to ensuring that happens. 

An RR is a serious track tool. Would you 

advise owners to consider training to get the 

most from their machines? 

The RR is designed to be very forgiving and safe, 

but in order to enhance your own personal performance 

I think advanced training can be beneficial. If 

you go to a school and learn how to develop your 

current level of riding ability, then you will unlock so 

much more potential in yourself and the bike. Tuition 

and practice will definitely make for a more satisfying 

RR experience.

When it comes to enjoyment of your motorcycle, 

other than the actual machine itself, nothing is more 

important than wearing the right helmet. Fortunately, 

the latest System 6 from BMW Motorrad has been 

30 years in the making and is therefore one of the 

most advanced helmets ever produced. 

This sixth-generation System is the latest in a long 

line of motorcycle helmets that can trace its history 

back to 1981 and the first “System” produced by 

BMW. During the past three decades, thousands of 

customers have discovered the benefits of the BMW 

flip-front helmet. Over the course of its development, 

advances in materials technology, crash test 

data collection and changing consumer requirements 

have brought about significant innovations in 

the helmet’s design. 

Once you’ve tried a flip-front helmet, it’s unlikely that 

you’ll go back to a full-face helmet, as the benefits 

are numerous. Being able to lift up (rather than 

remove) the helmet to talk to others – for example 

when paying a road toll or filling up on fuel at a 

service station – or being able to eat, drink or smoke 

without having to unfasten, take off, and then put the 

helmet on again, are all luxuries that flip-front helmet 

users enjoy. 

The latest System 6 is one of the quietest flip-fronts 

on the market and comes with a drop-down, integral 

sun visor, which is simply activated by a slider on the 

left side. This was requested by many customers, 

as this quick, effective solution does away with the 

need for sunglasses or having to carry a spare, tinted 

visor for use in bright conditions. 

Importantly, the System 6 is light, with excellent 

aeroacoustics, and therefore places less strain on 

its wearer. BMW Motorrad has placed a strong 

emphasis on safety and the System 6 possesses 

exceptionally high standards of impact absorption, 

including an extra neck band to prevent the helmet 

from twisting on impact, ensuring it remains in the 

best possible position on the rider’s head. 

Furthermore, during development it underwent 

intensive testing to ensure its integrity. The visor, 

for example, was lifted up and down 25,000 times, 

while the chin-bar mechanism (opened by means of 

a central button) was tested 10,000 times in order to 

recreate the everyday strains it was bound to experience 

in the real world. 

The helmet’s interior is made of Alcantara ® and 

breathable DuPont Coolmax ® , which is removable 

and washable, the chin strap fastens with a push-fit 

buckle, and there is naturally provision for installation 

of an in-helmet communication system, such as the 

BMW Motorrad communication system. 

The use of Bluetooth ® technology seamlessly connects 

the Navigator IV to the System 6’s in-helmet 

communication system, allowing clear route guidance 

through high-quality speakers. This doesn’t 

mean that you can’t enjoy music from your iPod, 

MP3 player or your own motorcycle’s sound system, 

as all of these devices will work together simultaneously 

with the Navigator IV. When route guidance is 

necessary, your music is paused automatically, then 

restarted afterwards.

BEEN PRODUCED IN THIS SPECIAL 

FACTORY FOR EXPORT ALL OVER THE

TO AROUND 130 COUNTRIES ACROSS THE

ASSEMBLED, IS A STORY IN ITSELF … 

With around 1,900 employees, the BMW factory in 

Berlin produces up to 510 motorcycles a day from 

the entire model range, as well as about 24,000 

brake discs for the car division. Annual motorcycle 

output is now around eight times higher than when 

production first started in 1969, when 12,000 

motorcycles were assembled in Berlin. 

The foundation of every motorcycle is laid in the 

machining shop, where core parts such as engine 

cases, cylinder heads, crankshafts and connecting 

rods, as well as frame elements, tanks and chassis 

components, are produced. Computer-controlled 

machining centres process components with high 

precision, ensuring the first-class quality that BMW 

bikes are renowned for, thanks to state-of-the-art 

machining and measuring technologies, as well as 

the highly-qualified associates who operate them. 

For BMW engine assembly, around 150 technicians 

working in two shifts build up to 450 highperformance 

engines every day, from Boxer twins 

and “fours” up to the magnificent inline six-cylinder 

engines found on the K 1600 GT and GTL machines. 

Using more than 600 different small parts 

and components, technicians are supported by 21 

automatic workstations. It takes around 90 minutes 

to assemble a Boxer engine and around 160 minutes 

to put together the new six-cylinder engine. 

In the paint shop, five computer-controlled robots 

apply paint to several thousand motorcycle components 

a day. These components come in more than 

70 different shapes and sizes, and are coated with 

water-based paint in more than 30 shades. However, 

in many cases, the skill and dexterity of experienced 

human painters is still required. For example, a 

steady hand is imperative when it comes to applying 

the traditional trim lines as well as tape applications 

to the tanks and side panels. 

A complex supply network is essential to a smooth 

production process, with the logistics department 

coordinating the material flow and ensuring that the 

components are available in the right amount and 

quality, in the right place at the right time. Almost 

10,000 different components, delivered by 500 

external partners from 33 countries, are fitted into 

the right sequence for the production process. 

Thanks to process coordination, painted components, 

groups of parts tailored for order from the preassembly 

and the pre-fitted components all arrive at 

the conveyor belt on time. 

The assembly lines are where the motorcycles are 

actually put together. They are fixed on mounting 

hangers on 300 rotating “hooks” moving in a flexible 

conveyor system. In this system, the machines are 

automatically transported through a 500-metre-long 

assembly line. Each mounting hook automatically 

rises to the most favourable working height at almost 

150 assembly stations, where all order-related data, 

as well as fastening torques and default settings, are 

communicated automatically to the relevant station. 

Depending on the model, it takes from 220 to 360 

minutes before the 2,000 parts and components 

are built into a complete and customer-ready BMW 

motorcycle. 

By the time BMW motorcycles reach the end of the 

assembly line, preparations have already taken place 

in the finishing shop for their dispatch to customers 

all over the world. Recyclable and foldable steel 

packing is used for deliveries to the main European 

markets, while solid containers made of wood and 

cardboard are used to transport motorcycles to overseas 

markets. Sustainability and logistical efficiency 

are paramount, so the end products are transported 

from the plant and further afield by truck, train and 

cargo ship. 

On 6 May 2011, a significant milestone in the company’s 

history was celebrated when the two millionth 

motorcycle left the assembly line at the BMW plant 

in Berlin Spandau. It was a proud moment for everyone 

involved in this ultra-modern vehicle production 

plant, where man and machine build two-wheeled 

dreams for customers to enjoy all over the world. 

BMW bikes are exported from the German capital 

to 130 countries and, with an annual investment of 

around 30 million euros in the factory, this innovative 

plant at Berlin Spandau will remain at the heart of 

BMW motorcycle manufacture for the foreseeable 

future. Rest assured it won’t be long until BMW 

employees are celebrating the production of the 

three millionth motorcycle in Berlin.

markets thanks to its high tensile strength, low 

weight and low thermal expansion. 

THESE FEATURES make the use of carbon-fibre 

very popular in aerospace, civil engineering, the military 

and especially the motorsports industry, where 

it can be found in a wide range of performance 

vehicles including sports cars and superbikes, as 

well as racing bicycle frames, powerboats and even 

safety helmets. Because this composite material is 

so easy on the eye, it is often used in the tuning and 

customizing industry, where the woven panels are 

left unpainted for maximum effect. 

Of course, carbon-fibre doesn’t only look great, 

its use is also becoming increasingly important in 

vehicle production in terms of weight savings, and 

therefore lower emissions, with a potential weight 

reduction of 50 per cent compared to steel or 

approximately 30 per cent compared to aluminium. 

Simple and instant weight savings for interchangeable 

parts then; but its production process is 

anything but simple. 

BMW ONLY USES PAN (polyacrylonitrile-based) 

high-quality fibres in the spinning process to create 

the precursor monofilament yarn, which is then 

“carbonized” at a high temperature (more than 

1000 degrees Celsius).The exclusion of air oxygen 

means that the fibre yarn carbonizes, rather than 

burns. For the carbonization of the precursor yarn 

into carbon-fibre, the yarn passes through several 

ovens set at different temperatures, and then runs 

through a “sizing bath”, which assures the perfect 

fibre-matrix adhesion needed for the lamination 

process. The yarn is then wound onto carbon-fibre 

spools for further textile processes such as weaving 

or multiaxial production. 

AS COOL 

AS CARBON. 

It’s all incredibly complicated – but the end result is 

an incredibly strong, yet flexible and lightweight material 

that has many uses and looks great. You’ll see 

it on BMW sports cars, such as the high-performance 

M3 and M6 models, which use carbon-fibre 

roofs that offer substantial weight savings over the 

standard items. Of course, when carbon-fibre was 

introduced into FORMULA ONE RACING, it revolutionized 

the sport, and just about everything on F1 

cars except the engine is now made of carbon-fibre, 

resulting in stiffer, lighter and even faster cars. 

Ultimately though, this amazing composite material 

is just a man-made fabric that comes on a roll and 

can be manipulated for a variety of different applica- 

tions. Because its structures behave differently to 

steel or aluminium, it can be perfectly customized 

by BMW engineers to suit the PERFORMANCE 

OF A PARTICULAR COMPONENT, whether it 

is flexibility in a certain direction, or high stiffness in 

another direction. 

For motorcycles such as the S 1000 RR and 

K 1300 R, a wide-range of carbon-fibre 

HIGH-PERFORMANCE PARTS have been 

designed so that owners can customize their own 

machines and give them an even more sporty look. 

The parts include: HP Carbon front wheel cover; rear 

wheel cover; badge carrier; tank cover; tail-hump 

cover; chain guard; heel guard; and engine spoiler. 

BMW Motorrad is the only manufacturer to offer 

its carbon parts with a high-quality, three-coat, 

high-gloss lacquer finish, which is UV-resistant and 

offers outstanding impact resistance and protection 

against discolouration. With the exception of the 

HP Carbon heel guard, all parts come with fitting 

instructions and can be easily installed by owners. 

According to Johann Sievers-Paulsen, who is one 

of the BMW Group’s experts within this field, the 

synergy with the company’s car division in terms 

of research and development has allowed 

BMW to develop and offer very high-quality, direct 

carbon-fibre replacements for standard plastic parts. 

“BMW Motorrad has several highly skilled EXPERTS 

ON CARBON-FIBRE STRUCTURES, who are 

involved in the development process right from the 

beginning of the design of the individual components. 

There is also a lot of synergy with the automotive 

division and we are in continuous discussions with 

them. This means that our high-performance carbonfibre 

parts mostly have the same requirements as the 

exterior automotive parts, resulting in extremely high 

quality and engineering levels.” 

So, thanks to a combination of in-house technical 

expertise and a desire to offer the highest levels of 

quality and customization, exclusive HP carbonmounted 

parts are available for bikes like the BMW 

S 1000 RR and the K 1300 R. Just how far you go

MAKE NO MISTAKE, THE ROADS ARE GET-

HAS BEEN A LEADER IN MOTORCYCLING 

SAFETY FOR DECADES, WITH A LONG 

LIST OF DEVELOPMENTS DEDICATED TO 

IMPROVING RIDER SAFETY. 

BMW Motorrad’s previous achievements in the field 

of rider safety are almost too numerous to mention. 

They include the world’s first ever motorcycle ABS, 

tyre pressure control, auto stability control, electronically 

adjustable suspension, adaptive headlight 

technology, Race ABS, and traction control with a 

choice of riding modes that offer different throttle 

response and torque characteristics. In the area of 

rider equipment, the NP Protectors developed by 

BMW Motorrad for motorcycle suits contribute to 

passive safety, as does the Neck Brace System 

introduced in 2007 and decades of helmet 

development. 

There are of course many technical solutions 

being developed that will find their way onto serial 

production machines in the years to come. Here is a 

summary of the latest innovations that will give future 

generations of motorcyclists a chance to enjoy and 

share our love of two wheels. 

ECALL WITH ACN 

In the aftermath of a serious road accident, every 

second is vital. Already available on BMW cars, a 

BMW Motorrad Emergency Call/Automatic Collision 

Notification system is currently being worked on. 

If the rider arrives at an accident on a bike fitted 

with eCall, he can use the eCall button to trigger a 

manual emergency call, which transmits the accident 

details and exact location to a BMW Call Centre 

to relay to the nearest rescue coordination centre. 

If the rider of a BMW motorcycle fitted with eCall is 

involved in an accident himself, this is registered by 

means of the ACN sensor system and an automatic 

emergency call is triggered with the BMW Call 

Centre, enabling transmission of the required data, 

such as the location and detailed information on the 

nature of the accident. 

RIDER INFORMATION AND 

ASSISTANCE SYSTEM 

Work is currently underway on an adaptation of a 

camera-based rider information and assistance 

system that can actively contribute to preventing 

dangerous situations from arising in the first place. 

The system provides feedback on speed limits by 

means of road sign detection and graphic display on 

the instrument panel. The camera is also capable of 

automatic detection of obstacles on the road, and a 

warning is given if there is a risk of collision. The system 

actively detects danger and is capable of generating 

a visual signal which draws the motorcyclist’s 

attention to the object detected, as well as preparing 

the brake system for imminent intervention. 

BMW MOTORRAD CONNECTEDRIDE 

Assistance systems based on vehicle-to-vehicle 

communication make motorcycling even safer and 

many of the projects in development featured below 

will be installed in serial production BMW motorcycles 

of the future. 

THE CROSS-TRAFFIC ASSISTANT analyzes 

road users approaching a junction, the priority 

situation and the probability of a collision. A cockpit 

display indicates traffic regulations to waiting 

drivers, who, in the case of a potential failure to give 

way, would be warned of the risk of collision in three 

stages. To protect the rider, the motorcycle headlight 

intensity is increased and additional LED strobes 

at the side of the machine are activated to increase 

visibility in case of an increasing risk of collision. 

If a collision is imminent, the motorcycle horn is 

sounded automatically. 

THE TRAFFIC LIGHT PHASE ASSISTANT 

allows the traffic light system to communicate with 

the motorcycle so that if the lights are due to be on 

red when the rider arrives at an intersection at an 

unchanged speed, he would receive this information 

early enough via the instrument panel to be able to 

brake gently. The assistant is also able to display the 

speed at which he could reach the traffic lights during 

the green cycle. 

A VIEW TO 

THE FUTURE. 

THE BAD WEATHER WARNING gives motorcyclists 

early warning of fog, rain, snow or black ice, 

shown by a visual indication in the instrument 

panel – optionally also a voice message in the 

BMW Motorrad Communication System. The 

assistant also gives details of approximately 

when the rider can be expected to encounter 

these conditions. 

THE OBSTACLE WARNING advises riders of 

obstacles ahead, such as oil or chippings on the 

surface, or a broken-down vehicle at the roadside. 

This is indicated by a signal on the instrument panel 

– also with optional voice message – with details 

of approximately how far away the obstacle is. The 

warning and location of the danger could also be 

transmitted from vehicle to vehicle. 

THE EMERGENCY VEHICLE WARNING 

SYSTEM provides a visual display in the instrument 

panel of an approaching emergency vehicle. A clear 

symbol and a voice message warn the rider, also 

providing details of how far away the vehicle is. 

THE ELECTRONIC BRAKE LIGHT SYSTEM 

helps prevent rear-end collisions in heavy traffi c by 

informing vehicles as early as possible that a series 

of brake manoeuvres have been carried out ahead. 

By receiving this information via the instrument 

panel and communication system, riders and 

drivers are able to react sooner and avoid rear-end 

collisions that can be caused by a chain reaction of 

late braking. 

THE OVERTAKING ASSISTANT uses a system 

of sensors (already in serial production in conjunction 

with Race ABS and DTC) to make an overtaking 

motorcycle more visible to other road users. If the 

vehicle ahead moves out to overtake at the same 

time as the motorcycle (because the driver has 

not seen the motorcyclist or wrongly estimated his 

speed), then the motorcyclist is in danger. Additional 

LEDs in the turn indicator then intensify the signalling 

effect, making the motorcycle more visible to 

the car driver and making it more likely the driver will 

notice the motorcycle before it disappears into the 

blind spot.

Riding solo around the world is hard enough, but 

imagine the challenge of taking 30 riders on an epic 

40,000-mile, 248-day motorcycle adventure through 

27 countries and across six continents? That’s just 

what GS fanatic Kevin Sanders did on his recent 

record-breaking, eight-month ride around the globe. 

Knowing that there were plenty of riders who wanted 

to explore the world on their GS, but didn’t feel confident 

enough to venture out alone, Kevin decided 

that there was sufficient demand for an organized 

and guided journey-of-a-lifetime. The “Discover 

Our Earth” trip took 18 months to plan and was put 

together by Kevin and the team at Globe Busters 

Motorcycle Expeditions, in association with Edelweiss 

Motorcycle Travel. 

It attracted riders from all over the world on a range 

of BMW motorcycles, including the R 1200 GS 

Adventure, F 800 GS and F 650 GS. Starting and 

finishing in the Austrian Alps, “Discover Our Earth” 

lasted around eight months and saw a combined 

total of 1,000,000 miles completed by 30 riders. 

Each motorcycle used around five full sets of tyres 

and around 4,000 litres of fuel during this amazing 

journey through 27 countries, ranging in altitude 

from 27 metres below sea level up to 4,800 metres 

above. On returning safely, expedition Leader Kevin, 

who is the founder of BMW Travel Partner Globe 

Busters, said: “Our epic journey was a truly incredible 

motorcycling experience. Along the way we 

watched the Dakar Rally start in Buenos Aires and 

the sun set over Uluru. We trekked up to Machu 

Picchu and climbed the Great Wall of China. We 

crossed the Andes, the Sahara, the Russian Steppe, 

the Urals, the Carpathians, the Alps, the Equator, 

the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the Golden 

Triangle, and the Panama Canal. We also rode two 

legendary routes – the Silk Road and the Pan 

American Highway.” 

Like the majority of riders on “Discover Our Earth”, 

Kevin relied on a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure and 

has in fact used GS bikes throughout his many years 

of travelling. During this incredible journey, Kevin 

says the bikes performed amazingly, never letting 

their riders down and even managing to convert the 

few motorcyclists who were riding other brands. 

“Over the course of the 40,000 miles, we experienced 

all conditions from -7°C to more than 44°C. 

We rode everywhere from deserts to mountains. 

We had rain, heat, humidity, cold, dust, mud and 

river crossings, but the bikes stood up to every challenge 

we threw at them. We had a mix of R 1200 GS 

machines and R 1200 GS Adventures, as well as 

R 1150 GS, F 800 GS and F 650 GS bikes. 

The majority of models were the R 1200 GS 

Adventures – these always come out top in terms 

of problems or any fixes needed en route. You just 

put fuel in, turn the key and away you go. Every bike 

made it home in one piece! 

“We normally have a couple of non-BMW riders on 

our trips and once they experience first-hand how little 

maintenance the BMWs need compared to other 

bikes, I think they do return home thinking about 

changing brands.” 

Kevin cites this latest journey as his hardest challenge 

to date, which might sound strange coming 

from someone who holds a Guinness World Record 

for riding around the world on a BMW R 1150 GS in 

19 days. 

“This was a totally different challenge. On that 

World Record it was just me and the road, so it was 

quite a selfish exercise. “Discover our Earth” was 

a marathon with a huge team of individual riders 

to manage. That made it very tricky – but very, very 

rewarding, too.” 

With the ambitious trip making headlines wherever 

the riders went, Kevin has already received sufficient 

interest to start planning the next “Discover our 

Earth” journey, which will take place in 2013.

GET OFF 

THE BEATEN TRACK. 

The motorcycle circuit at the Hechlingen Enduro 

Park offers just the right off-road conditions – 

precipices, muddy single trails, bumpy forest tracks, 

narrow beaten tracks, ruts and small but wonderful 

uphill and downhill stretches. Then there is the 

X-Track for Husqvarna riders, with its steep bends, 

tables and jumps that are sure to give even hardened 

off-road fans a powerful rush of adrenaline. 

There are several choices of training programme, 

from those for beginners with limited experience, 

through to programmes for advanced motor- 

cyclists, and even courses for expert riders who wish 

to master every type of terrain. You can ride your own 

motorcycle or choose from one of the school’s 

F 650 GS, F 800 GS, R 1200 GS or 

R 1200 GS Adventure machines, as well as a 

selection of the latest Husqvarna off-road models. 

Here’s a summary of what’s on offer at Hechlingen 

Enduro Park in 2012: 

One-Day Enduro Training 

Practice makes perfect, and on the big training area 

at Hechlingen you will learn the basics of off-road 

riding, such as hill-starts, the correct line of sight and 

performing braking manoeuvres on gravel. Exercises 

on surfaces such as rubble, gravel and forest soil get 

you into shape for your own enduro excursions. The 

techniques you learn will not only help you in riding 

off the beaten track, but also give you more 

performance control. 

Two-Day Enduro Training 

Gravel and rubble tracks, steep slopes – the Enduro 

Park Hechlingen offers lots of variety with many 

different levels of difficulty. Enthusiastic enduro 

riders can undergo intensive training on this two-day 

course and experience riding and braking on 

loose surfaces, dealing with steep slopes and 

picking up a motorcycle on a steep gradient. 

This course provides two days of off-road fun. 

Enduro Training for Women 

There is a growing number of female enduro enthusiasts, 

so if you’re one of them, how about considering 

the Enduro Training for Women courses? The 

programme includes exercises which provide you 

with excellent preparation for the varying challenges 

of rough terrain: basic training in the safe handling of 

the motorcycle; braking exercises; and cornering on 

loose surfaces – all this gets you fit for lengthier 

off-road tours. This one-day course can even 

be specified on a BMW motorcycle with a lowered 

seat height. 

One-Day Sports Training 

Why not get sporty and face some challenging riding 

on Husqvarna machines under the supervision of 

professional instructors? Discover what advanced 

tuition on our circuit and X-Track can do for your 

confidence and riding skills. 

Give free rein to your passion and discover just how 

much fun these dedicated off-road bikes can be in 

the right environment. You may even jump to the 

next level with our two-day advanced sports training 

course, which gives you the chance to experience 

and ride the legendary Erzberg mountain in Austria. 

Enduro Tours 

Of course, once you’ve acquired your off-road skills,

kind of roads and tracks it was designed to be riden 

on? From our extensive experience of adventure 

travel, we have hand-picked a selection of special 

tours for enduro fans to allow you to experience 

some of the most beautiful places to ride in Europe

A BMW Enduro motorcycle will help you get off

we ran tours to Hungary, the Maritime Alps, Tuscany,

THE BMW MOTORRAD COMMUNITY IS A 

SOCIAL NETWORKING TOOL WITH A DIF-

The aim of the community is to provide a platform 

where people who share a love of riding can find each 

other, arrange trips and spend more time than ever 

out on the road. The BMW Motorrad Community is 

split into four main areas and members have access 

to a range of tools: TourFinder, Profile, Photos, and 

Meet and Ride. TourFinder is one of the most exciting 

features, offering huge scope for planning and 

discovering tours lasting anything from a day to more 

than a month, or from one kilometre to more than 

10,000 kilometres. The level can be set at easy, medium 

or hard, with options for Enduro, Roadster, Tour 

and Sport bikes. The simple search tool lets members 

enter a destination country, then adjust duration, difficulty 

and distance with user-friendly sliders. TourFinder 

then suggests routes based on those criteria. 

Alternatively, the tool can be used to design a new 

tour – riders simply click on the interactive map 

to mark out their route, then give it a name and 

description. Riders can rate each other’s tours using 

a star rating or thumbs-up/thumbs-down icon, or can 

leave a comment about a tour, and upload photos 

and videos of themselves. Many users have already 

contributed their favourite rides, with entries across 

the world – giving inside knowledge of the best 

places for visitors and adventure travellers to explore. 

Meet and Ride is another key area within the 

community – it allows users to find each other and 

organize a ride. Members can either plan a trip and 

invite others to join them, or browse requests for 

riding partners and find a trip they would like to join. 

They can then arrange when and where to meet 

using a message system. Meet and Ride is an ideal 

way to get to know new riding companions or to 

arrange to meet up with friends. 

BMW Motorrad Community has also taken care of 

the only potential problem caused by such a packed 

social calendar. The Route Diary, which automatically 

updates when members plan or join a route, makes 

keeping track of plans simple, providing instant 

access to the details of any plans made through 

the site. 

The My Profile section is an opportunity to share 

photos, videos, riding tips and more with friends or 

the whole community. A choice of privacy settings 

means details are only shared with those the user 

chooses. Accounts have the option of adding or 

finding friends. These can be people who become 

acquainted through the Motorrad Community, or 

existing friends whose details can be imported from 

other social networking accounts like Facebook. 

Individuals can also join or create groups, manage 

a newsfeed and, most importantly, add details of 

motorcycles! Weather reports for the user’s local 

area are a handy extra, particularly as they include a 

suggestion for what piece of BMW Riding Apparel 

will suit the conditions outdoors. 

The Photos function provides the opportunity to 

browse other users’ images of their machines or 

sights and scenery from tours they’ve taken. Users 

can contribute their own shots if desired. 

The BMW Motorrad Community is easy to use, and 

while it provides members with an excellent online 

experience, the aim is not to create a virtual world 

with virtual bikers and rides. The network is intended 

to get people out on the road, find them riding 

companions and to help people share their passion 

and knowledge. 

Since the Community launched in 2011, there have 

been thousands of visitors, many of whom have 

created their own profiles, uploaded photos and 

videos, added routes for others to view, and sent 

messages, invitations and friend requests to other 

BMW fans. This dedicated global community of 

riders is growing all the time and already boasts
