WITH LIGHTWEIGHT PAPERBOARD
The bending stiffness of paperboard greatly affects how the consumer
experiences the package. It is also of vital importance to compression
strength, which ensures that the packaging as well as the product within
stay intact through transportation, storage and shelving.
Metsä Board’s fresh forest fibre based lightweight paperboards provide
the requisite stiffness and bulk at lower basis weights, which makes it
possible to use lighter board without compromising on quality and
performance. This provides significant savings through a yield advantage.
Further, lightweight boards advance sustainability throughout the supply
chain as they consume less raw material, decrease transport volumes and
produce less waste.

SECURE STRENGTH
TO IMPROVE LOGISTIC PERFORMANCE
Packaging has three main challenges in its lengthy (and sometimes rough)
passage through the logistic chain:
• to protect the product all the way from the packing line
to the consumer
• to stay in shape in order to attract the consumers at
the point-of-sale
• to work efficiently as a logistic unit
Increasingly, packaging and retail solutions require stacking, which puts
cartons under considerable forces of compression and can result in bulging
and cracking. Damaged packaging causes additional costs, produces waste
and undermines brand identity.
Stacking performance can be improved by using paperboard with high
bending stiffness and compression strength. The greater rigidity helps keep
the product unblemished and the packaging in its original shape. Packaging
of high quality also tends to be handled more carefully in the supply chain.
