PACKAGING
EFFICIENT
INCREASE SALES AND REDUCE COSTS THROUGHOUT
THE VALUE CHAIN WITH EFFICIENT PACKAGING
As competition and profit margins get tighter, businesses keep fine-tuning
every part of their operations. At each stage of the packaging supply chain
there are opportunities to enhance profitability by:
• increasing sales revenue
(sales uplift and/or higher margins through meeting consumer
preferences)
• decreasing operating costs
(lower raw material expenses and savings in the supply chain)
The purpose of packaging is to protect and promote the product. Packaging
is efficient when it performs all these functions effectively and economically
throughout its lifecycle, from making to disposal.
This requires up-to-date methods and advanced raw materials such as
lightweight high-performance boards with strength and printability equal
to those of heavier grades. In return, efficient packaging provides:
MAKE THE BRAND SHINE
AT THE POINT-OF-SALE
The ultimate success or failure of a brand depends on just a few seconds at
the point-of-sale, where most purchasing decisions are made. The role of
packaging in that moment of truth is crucial. Consumers quickly notice if
the packaging does not match the carefully built brand identity.
With the consumer market growing more fragmented and media outlets
increasing, advertisers no longer reach all relevant groups through a few
focused channels. However, at the point-of-sale it is still possible to reach
everyone. Eye-catching packaging helps make the most of that window of
opportunity.
Studies reveal that consumers are prepared to
pay more for products with innovative packaging
and a board grade that provides an attractive visual
appearance. Learn more about the research:
IN RETAIL, LASTING IMPRESSIONS ARE MADE
AT FIRST SIGHT AND TOUCH, WHICH SETS
A VARIETY OF DEMANDS ON PAPERBOARD
Good visual appearance on
the reverse side to maintain
the quality impression when
the packaging is opened.
Good absorption and
ink-setting properties
to help achieve small
dot gain and sharp images.
High brightness to provide
a fresh and clean look
– detected in both printed
and unprinted areas.
High stiffness to make the
product appear trustworthy
and substantial as well as
to give the packaging the
strength to make it through
the supply chain in pristine
condition.
High smoothness and
an even surface to give an
impression of premium
quality – the board structure
is seen “under the print”.
Suitability for special effects
and high-quality images,
GET A BETTER YIELD
WITH LIGHTWEIGHT PAPERBOARD
The bending stiffness of paperboard greatly affects how the consumer
experiences the package. It is also of vital importance to compression
strength, which ensures that the packaging as well as the product within
stay intact through transportation, storage and shelving.
Metsä Board’s fresh forest fibre based lightweight paperboards provide
the requisite stiffness and bulk at lower basis weights, which makes it
possible to use lighter board without compromising on quality and
performance. This provides significant savings through a yield advantage.
Further, lightweight boards advance sustainability throughout the supply
chain as they consume less raw material, decrease transport volumes and
produce less waste.
MORE CARTONS WITH
THE SAME WEIGHT
For an order of 50,000 sheets (520 x 720 mm) you will need
18,720 m 2 of board (~13 mNm CD stiffness, ~500 µm thickness).
SAVE TIME AND MONEY
WITH TROUBLE-FREE RUNNABILITY
Time is money – and in high-speed industrial processes
run on tight deadlines a little time can quickly add
up to a lot of money. Paperboard with enhanced
runnability improves productivity and profitability in
converting processes (such as printing, die-cutting and
glueing) and on packing lines thanks to:
Alongside stiffness, quality consistency is
the key parameter in runnability issues.
That is why Metsä Board has introduced
ever tighter tolerances to its paperboards.
Excellent consistency helps keep the machines
running smoothly.
• faster machine speeds
• quicker make-ready times
• fewer interruptions
• fewer product and carton losses
SECURE STRENGTH
TO IMPROVE LOGISTIC PERFORMANCE
Packaging has three main challenges in its lengthy (and sometimes rough)
passage through the logistic chain:
• to protect the product all the way from the packing line
to the consumer
• to stay in shape in order to attract the consumers at
the point-of-sale
• to work efficiently as a logistic unit
Increasingly, packaging and retail solutions require stacking, which puts
cartons under considerable forces of compression and can result in bulging
and cracking. Damaged packaging causes additional costs, produces waste
and undermines brand identity.
Stacking performance can be improved by using paperboard with high
bending stiffness and compression strength. The greater rigidity helps keep
the product unblemished and the packaging in its original shape. Packaging
of high quality also tends to be handled more carefully in the supply chain.
ENHANCE SUSTAINABILITY
BY ENHANCING EFFICIENCY
The role of sustainability in our daily decision-making
will keep growing as consumers and businesses alike
become increasingly aware of issues such as climate
change, biodiversity and management of natural
resources. In packaging, economic and environmental
goals actually converge: improving efficiency improves
sustainability as well. Efficient packaging has a positive
impact on the sustainability of the entire supply chain.
...and less packaging
waste and lower disposal
fees at the end of the
chain.
Reduction in total
weight means less
transported material...
Using lightweight paperboard reduces
the total amount of packaging material.
Excellent board consistency
reduces waste in converting
and packing processes.
Lightweight paperboards
use less raw material.
Efficient and well-managed
production saves environment.
Research reveals that using lightweight paperboards reduces the carbon
footprint at least in proportion to the reduction in weight. Learn more
