Upon the previous UML model, the designer visually specifies the design of both the Web application functionalities, and the knowledge repository (holding the semantics during the application execution) using the framework components. Once the application model has been created, the CASE tool supporting the framework provides automatic generation of the application code (on the J2EE platform). At runtime the knowledge developer inserts the knowledge (specified as XMI representation of the UML models) in the repository, and eventually the final user will be able to browse the application hypertexts. The implementation experience comprises: • the specification and implementation of the WebML primitives corresponding to the framework components • the specification of the patterns in WebML • the code generation with the WebRatio CASE tool [55] integrated with the Pellet reasoner. 8
This approach overcomes the developers’ resistance to the new knowledge-oriented and semantics-oriented paradigm thanks to the adoption of the widely accepted UML notation and to its immediate applicability to design and development of applications. Using this framework, we have developed a web application. 9
