The Family of Herba Devynia
The secrets of nature. Bottled and served

The Legend
Bitter “Herba Devynia” is one of the most mysterious drinks made in
Lithuania. Some historic sources explain this by a legend that reaches
as far ago as the middle ages and triggers the imagination of nowadays
consumer.
The legend tells about the ancient priests that used to gather specific
sort of herbs, desiccate them in a special manner and keep them within
spirit for three weeks. The interesting fact is that the first day was
necessarily chosen to be the longest day of the year, and the drink was
kept only outside in the nature. This was the way to gather as much of
natural powers as possible – not only from the herbs, but also the fresh
vital air and the ever-shining Sun.
The drink that was produced was known for its special powers – the
healing characteristics and the strength it provided. Therefore it was
mainly consumed by the great warriors that the Baltic lands needed a
lot back in those days.

The Legend
Only later, after the secret of the recipe has been revealed by others, it appeared that
there was no coincidence in the supernatural features of the drink. Apparently, what
is made in a special way, gives a special outcome.
The uniqueness of this drink lays in the so-called “rhythm of three”. It originates
from the division of the world into three elements: water, sky and earth. Apart from
the number of the weeks the drink used to be matured for (three, of course), the
mostly surprising thing is the composition of ingredients. It is undoubtedly related
to the pagan image of the world, as the drink contains elements corresponding the
three spheres of the mythological world: roots (the Underground), bark and herbs
(the Ground), and leaves, blossoms and fruits (the Sky).
And who knows what kind of spells where used to make the “Herba Devynia” so
magical, and what kind of fairies and elves used to help the ancient priests…
And where else could have probably the oldest bitter in the world been created?
Only in the country known for persistence of keeping paganism for the longest in
Europe. In Lithuania.
