Ted Lewis Museum & Theater 65 

Known as “The Jazz King” and recognized as 

“Circleville’s Most Famous Son,” Ted Lewis is 

honored with a museum in his hometown. Located 

in the only remaining building that conformed to 

the original Circle, it houses treasured memorabilia 

of Ted’s musical career. There is also a small 

theatre in which you can view clips of his theatrical 

performances. Enjoy the annual Ted Lewis Music 

Festival in June.

Green’s Heritage Village & Museum 13 

Tour the amazing Heritage Village, a 

collection of 14 restored historic buildings 

that include a blacksmith shop, a 1799 

smokehouse and an original railroad depot 

once owned by Henry Ford. View an 

assortment of antique horse-drawn carriages, 

toy trains, model tractors, antique bikes 

and many other items the Green’s have

Nestled next to the Small Town Museum, this small park was dedicated 

during Ashville’s Centennial Celebration in 1982.

Ohio’s Small Town Museum 36 

This one-of-a-kind museum has been nationally 

recognized on Oprah and in the New York 

Times. Experience unique displays, from the 

world’s smartest rooster to the Ohio-born 

munchkin. Its most notable features include 

the world’s largest scrapbook and the special 

traffic light invented by Ashville’s Teddy Boor.

Underground Railroad Marker 68 

“It is not underground nor a railroad” but a system of locally conducted 

safe houses for assisting escaping slaves. Several local Underground 

Railroad conductors and stations were active from 1835-1860 

including clergymen William Hanby and Immanuel Buchwalter, 

businessman Phillip Doddridge, Black workman George Stanhope, 

Jonathan and George Dreisbach and Col. Samuel Moore.

Building of the courthouse, located at the corner 

of Court and Franklin streets, was begun in the fall of 

1845. It was enlarged by the addition of two wings 

in 1888 and was remodeled in the latter 

part of 1889.

Logan Elm 

Memorial Park 18 

Chief Logan Marker 

It was here under a large elm 

tree that in 1774, Tah-gah-jute, 

the Mingo chief called Logan 

was said to have delivered 

his powerful speech on Indianwhite 

relations, which was 

translated and delivered to 

Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore 

at Camp Charlotte. 

The speech is inscribed on this 

monument at the park, worded 

as it was related to President 

Thomas Jefferson. Once considered to be one of the largest elms 

in the United States, the 65 foot tall elm died in 1964 after being 

stricken with blight and damaged by storms.

Women in history, Indian heritage and the 

history and evolution of different professions 

are just some of what you’ll find at this

Canal Park 5 

This 2.3 mile long section of the Ohio Erie 

Canal has been restored by the Pickaway 

County Historical and Genealogical Society 

as a historical, educational and recreational 

park. Canal Park offers a shelter house and a 

towpath trail along sections of the canal.

Slate Run Living Historical Farm 27 

This historic farm depicts life as it was in the 

1880s. Get a hands-on experience with farm 

chores and family life on this pre-electricity, 

pre-gasoline Ohio farm.

The Castle Inn Bed & Breakfast 43 

Completed in 1899 by Samuel Ruggles, 

the Castle Inn was a wedding gift for his 

new bride. A tour will show architecture 

that is reminiscent of the castles in England 

from which many of the original antiques 

were acquired. The home was designed by 

local architect Charles Stribling. Tours by 

appointment only.

Stage’s Pond State Nature Preserve 29 

This glacial kettle lake is a waterfowl refuge 

and prime observation area for bird life. As 

the glacier receded from this part of Pickaway 

County, an immense chunk of ice broke free 

and remained behind to be covered with 

accumulating sands, gravels and other glacial 

debris washing off the melting glacier. Today 

some 30 acres of this 64-acre depression lie under water surrounded by 

marshy low areas. The rest of the 178-acre land is comprised of field and 

woodland areas with walking paths to explore the habitat.

100th Anniversary 

Pumpkin Show Mural 53 

Located in the heart of the historic downtown Circleville 

business district, this outstanding three-dimensional 

mural was created by internationally acclaimed muralist 

Eric Henn. It was commissioned in 2006 to honor the 

100-year anniversary of the Circleville Pumpkin Show.

The Soldiers Monumental Museum 62 

The area’s Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean 

War and Vietnam war veterans are honored 

at this museum, which includes a fascinating

Forest Cemetery 47 

Established in 1852 in the “forest” north 

of Circleville, this scenic cemetery offers 

numerous walking trails, which mark the final 

resting place for decorated veterans and 

interesting people such as Jazz Legend Ted 

Lewis and “Miss Ellen” Dalton, who worked 

in the White House with Abraham Lincoln. The Soldier at Parade Rest 

monument by the entrance is the likeness of John Groce, a local war hero.

Calamus Swamp 3 

This beautiful, diverse and rare wetland was 

dedicated as a Columbus Audubon Preserve 

on June 3, 2000. Calamus’ 19-acres 

offer a unique glimpse into the glacial past 

that shaped Ohio’s landscape. It is home 

to several distinct plant communities and 

numerous breeding birds and is an appealing 

resting spot for birds migrating through the Scioto River corridor.

Circleville Raceway Park 

This state-of-the-art asphalt course is one of 

the premiere facilities in Ohio and features 

professional kart and motorcycle racing from 

April through October. The track has drivethrough

Pickaway County Welcome Center 59 

When visiting Pickaway County, your first stop should be the new 

Pickaway County Welcome Center located at 325 W. Main Street 

at the entrance to historic downtown Circleville. 

There you will find maps and brochures for many attractions, as

Commercial Point Grand Prix of Karting 

Each August, the streets of Commercial Point are converted into a kart 

track as over 150 entrants join in this annual street race. The village 

welcomes spectators and racers with concessions and cookouts.

Commercial Point Homecoming Festival 

This early June festival is famous for ocean 

perch sandwiches and features a midway 

packed with rides, games, great food, free

or join the party in the beer garden featuring

Treaty of Camp Charlotte Marker 30 

Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore headed to the Shawnee villages to negotiate 

peace and set up camp at this site. The resulting Treaty of Camp Charlotte ended 

“Dunmore’s War” and stipulated that the Indians give up rights to land south of the 

Ohio River and allow boats to travel on the river undisturbed.

Rich in history, Pickaway County was the home of the prehistoric Mound 

Builders several thousand years before the arrival of the later Indian tribes 

and European settlers. 

The first permanent settlers of Pickaway County arrived in late 1796 or 

early 1797 and erected cabins along an old Indian trail that ran between 

Lancaster and Chillicothe. One of the first permanent settlements was 

Newellstown, now known as Tarlton, which was established in 1801 

along the trail called Zane’s Trace. Pickaway County was created by an 

act of the Ohio Legislature in 1810 from three surrounding counties and 

Circleville was designated the County Seat in 1811. 

History of Towns & Villages 

in Pickaway County 

Ashville 

Located nine miles north of Circleville, this quaint 

village is located on land once occupied by 

the Mound Builders and later by Shawnee 

Indians. In the 1830s, a distillery was 

started by Richard Stage and by 1874 

a railroad was being built and was 

completed the next year. The Village 

of Ashville was incorporated in 1882 

and currently has a population of 

approximately 3,174. 

The nationally acclaimed “Ohio’s Small 

Town Museum” is located in the historic 

downtown business district and honors 

Ashville’s heritage. One of the major 

attractions in the museum is the unique traffic 

light, invented by T.A. Boor in the 1930s, 

which hung at the major downtown intersection. 

Ashville also hosts a very large Fourth of July 

celebration, established in 1929, and continues to 

attract large crowds. 

Circleville 

Circleville was unique among early American towns, built to conform to 

a circular prehistoric earthworks. When Pickaway County was formed 

in 1810, the new town was laid out within the ancient Circle on the 

high bank east of the Scioto River. Its streets radiated from an octagonal 

courthouse in the center of the Circle. When the Ohio Erie Canal 

reached Circleville, the shape of the town within the Circle proved to be 

a hindrance and in 1838 a group of enterprising businessmen began to 

“square the Circle.” Over the next 20 years the job was accomplished 

and all traces of the ancient earthworks disappeared. 

The famous Circleville Pumpkin Show recently celebrated its 100-year 

anniversary and is considered to be one of the top festivals in the United 

States. Circleville has always been a diverse community balanced by 

manufacturing, commerce and agriculture and the town still retains its 

charming character. 

Commercial Point 

This village was settled in 1841 as Genoa. In 1843, the nearby town of 

Rome united with Genoa and in 1872 became known as Commercial 

Point. The community holds a Homecoming Celebration each year and is 

hometown to IndyCar driver Sarah Fisher. 

Darbyville 

At one time, the Shawnee Indians had several villages and a large burial 

ground in the vicinity. Darby Creek, which flows along the village, is now 

designated as a National and State Scenic River. Both Darby Creek and 

Darbyville were named for the Shawnee Indian Chief Darby. 

New Holland 

Located on the Pickaway-Fayette County line, the town 

was settled in 1818 as Flemingsburg. The name was 

changed to New Holland and incorporated in 

1835. Deer Creek State Park is located nearby. 

Orient 

The village is located in the northwestern 

part of Pickaway County. Green’s 

Heritage Museum highlights many of 

the historic aspects of the region and 

the Pickaway Correctional Institution is 

located outside the village. 

South Bloomfield 

Originally a stagecoach stop on the 

Columbus-Chillicothe line, the town was 

laid out in 1804 with the hope that it 

might become the county seat; however 

the founders’ dreams were never realized. 

The small village of Millport was established 

near South Bloomfield with the building of the 

Ohio Canal and Lock Number 31 on the canal 

can be seen as well as part of the canal and towpath. 

Also, the engine house of an old gristmill is still standing. 

Millport is now within the municipality of South Bloomfield and 

the area is experiencing rapid growth. 

Tarlton 

Probably the first settlement in Pickaway County, Tarlton was settled in 

1801 as Newellstown. It is thought that the community was later named 

for British Cavalry Commander Sir Banastre Tarleton. Zane’s Trace passed 

through Tarlton and was once the principal route from Kentucky to the East. 

Cross Mound, a remarkable specimen of an ancient mound, is located 

outside Tarlton. 

Williamsport 

Located nine miles west of Circleville on US-22, the village was settled in 

1818. It was noted for many years as a health spa because of 

the mineral spring, which was thought to have medicinal value. The 

community purchased vacated school grounds in the center of town 

for a community park.
