The course consists of 8 modules total<strong>in</strong>g 180<br />

hours, lead<strong>in</strong>g to a Certificate of <strong>Vet</strong>er<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>Herbal</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e from <strong>IVAS</strong>, the College<br />

of Integrative <strong>Vet</strong>er<strong>in</strong>ary Therapeutics and the<br />

Sydney Institute of Traditional Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

You can complete the course as quickly as you<br />

want or take up to 2 years - you set your own pace.<br />

Learn<strong>in</strong>g materials <strong>in</strong>clude pr<strong>in</strong>ted study guides,<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g material, lecture notes, herb samples,<br />

CD ROMs, DVDs, as well as other <strong>in</strong>teractive<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g methods. These allow you to study from<br />

home or work. You can choose when and where<br />

you study <strong>in</strong> order to accommodate your work and<br />

family commitments. Support and communication<br />

between you and your personal tutor is available<br />

Faculty<br />

Steve Marsden DVM, ND, MSOM, L.Ac, Dipl.C.H., RH (AGH)<br />

Dr. Steve Marsden received his doctorate <strong>in</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>ary medic<strong>in</strong>e at the University of<br />

Saskatchewan <strong>in</strong> 1988. At the National College of Naturopathic Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> Portland,<br />

Oregon he obta<strong>in</strong>ed a doctorate <strong>in</strong> Naturapathic medic<strong>in</strong>e, a Master’s of Science<br />

<strong>in</strong> Oriental Medic<strong>in</strong>e, and his licensure <strong>in</strong> acupuncture and Diplomat status<br />

<strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese herbology. He treats both pets and people <strong>in</strong> his Edmonton, Alberta<br />

practice. He has <strong>in</strong>structed veter<strong>in</strong>arians <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Medic<strong>in</strong>e at <strong>IVAS</strong>, Tufts and<br />

AVAC. He is a member of the American <strong>Herbal</strong>ists Guild. He is the co-author of<br />

several texts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Manual of Natural <strong>Vet</strong>er<strong>in</strong>ary Medic<strong>in</strong>e & <strong>Vet</strong>er<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>Herbal</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Barbara Fougere BSc BVMS (Hons) MODT MHSc (Herb Med) CVA CVBM CVCP<br />

Dr. Barbara Fougere has facilitated tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>Herbal</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> Australia s<strong>in</strong>ce 2006. She<br />

graduated from Murdoch Univerity <strong>in</strong> 1986 and is certified <strong>in</strong> <strong>Vet</strong>er<strong>in</strong>ary Botanical Medic<strong>in</strong>e and has a<br />

Masters degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>Herbal</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e. She has worked with Steve to develop a distance education course<br />

that is engag<strong>in</strong>g, stimulat<strong>in</strong>g and provides the equivalent learn<strong>in</strong>g experience for veter<strong>in</strong>arians as a face-toface<br />

course. She is the coauthor and author of several books <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the text <strong>Vet</strong>er<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>Herbal</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />

The registration form <strong>in</strong> this brochure is also available on the <strong>IVAS</strong> website (www.ivas.org). Return the<br />

completed form to <strong>IVAS</strong> together with your course fees and a copy of your veter<strong>in</strong>ary license renewal.<br />

Enrollment deadl<strong>in</strong>es are February 28th, May 31st, August 31st and November 30th each year. Seats <strong>in</strong><br />

the course are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Class size is restricted and your enrollment<br />

may be delayed to a future start date, so please apply early! The course is only open to licensed graduate<br />

veter<strong>in</strong>arians. A confirmation package, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g confirmation of your enrollment, your receipt, your course<br />

curriculum and text requirements, will be sent to you after we receive your registration form and payment. All<br />

other materials will be shipped to you with<strong>in</strong> 30 days after the registration deadl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Fees<br />

Full course fee is US$3,950.00 and can be paid via VISA, MasterCard, AMEX or by check (checks must be<br />

Prerequisite Module: Introduction to TCM<br />

If you have never studied TCM before, you will need to complete the prerequisite module Introduction to<br />

TCM. This is sent at the same time as the <strong>Vet</strong>er<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>Herbal</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Course</strong> and will provide you with the<br />

basic concepts that will enable you to complete the whole course with ease. This module is an additional<br />

US$250.00.<br />

Requirements to Complete the <strong>Course</strong><br />

There are 8 modules and 30 units with lessons to complete. Each unit has learn<strong>in</strong>g objectives, exercises and<br />

self-assessments. Most have DVD lectures to view. Each module has an exercise and/or guided case study<br />

to be completed and assessed as competent or not by your tutor.<br />

• You will need to complete 2 case studies and an assignment, both of which are graded. A score of 70% or<br />

higher is a pass<strong>in</strong>g score.<br />

• An attendance log with 20 hours of TCM Cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g Education is required. This may be veter<strong>in</strong>ary or human,<br />

and is <strong>in</strong>tended to broaden your exposure to TCM theory, therapeutics, diagnosis, different philosophies<br />

and approaches - a broader view than the one we provide just with this course. You will need to keep an<br />

attendance log at sem<strong>in</strong>ars, web<strong>in</strong>ars or of journals you’ve read. This activity will help you develop networks<br />

and exposure that can spark new ideas and perspectives.<br />

• A case log book of 30 cases must be submitted to your tutor.<br />

It is expected that you will need to allow 180 hours to complete the course — additional hours may be<br />

required to complete the certification process.<br />

REFUND POLICY:<br />

For cancellations prior to shipment of course materials, tuition is fully refundable m<strong>in</strong>us a $300.00 enrollment and<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration fee. No refund will be available after the materials are dispatched for any reason, as this course has a<br />

flexible completion period.
