Letters
from the editor
iIn 2005, through the generosity of the Roosevelt
Family, the St. Mark’s bell tower was outfitted
with a Carillon. Today, we enjoy the ringing of
the bells on a daily basis, as they mark the
passage of the day at 10600 Preston Road. In
1964, a young Renaissance man biked onto the
St. Mark’s campus to teach drama, and would
go on to recruit legendary faculty members,
inspire hundreds of young artists, and spawn a
world-class Fine Arts program.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the many
people whose talent, careful planning, and foresight
have brought us to the place where we are
today. It’s hard to imagine St. Mark’s without a
fine arts program. It’s hard to imagine a day
without the sound of music from the bell tower.
So much of what we take for granted was carefully
planted by those with vision, passion,
generosity, and a deep and abiding care for
this School.
When I arrived as Director of Communications
in the fall of 2009, I jumped right into
the planning for the public launch of The
Centennial Challenge, one of the most ambitious
fundraising campaigns among secondary
schools in the country— certainly the most
comprehensive in the history of our School.
It’s hard to believe that we have less than three
months until its completion and our goal of
$110 Million is realized.
There have been many great moments to
celebrate along the way; objectives have been
accomplished, and thousands of alumni,
parents, and friends of the School have come
together to make sure that excellence
continues at St. Mark’s for decades to come.
The Centennial Challenge is our opportunity to
be a part of something greater than ourselves.
This is our time to
plant the seeds for
future generations
of Marksmen and
their families, and
I, for one, am
grateful and
humbled to have
had a small part in doing so.
I hope you all enjoy this issue and take PRIDE
in what we have accomplished and what we will
continue to accomplish together.
oOne of the many hidden benefits of a St. Mark’s
education is the chance to hear and visit with
unique speakers who, one way or another,
make their way to 10600 Preston Road. This
year alone, more than a half-dozen individuals
have enlightened boys and their parents with
unique experiences and insights.
Harry Lynch ’84
Documentary filmmaker and environmental
educator Harry Lynch ’84 returned to campus
while promoting his new documentary Switch,
which takes an agenda-free look at the energy
debate. Lynch visited the AP Environmental
Science class, taught by fellow Marksman Dan
Northcut ’81, and discussed some of the themes
in his documentary, such as the pros and cons
of nuclear energy, coal, and fossil fuels. He
also screened videos from the Switch Energy
Project, an educational website he co-created.
While Harry co-produced the film, another
Marksman was also on the crew: frequent
collaborator Wilson Waggoner ’90 served as
the cinematographer.
Rorke Denver
Lieutenant Commander Rorke
Denver knows a thing or two about
courage and honor. As a Navy
SEAL, those words are part of a
creed he has lived by as a member
of the most elite fighting force
in history. As a SEAL, Denver
traveled across the globe, pursuing
America’s enemies and putting
his life on the line to keep our
country safe. In December, he
came to St. Mark’s and spoke
with Upper and Middle School boys about his
experiences and thoughts on being a man.
Denver opened with a fe w practical suggestions
for the boys before diving into the time
he spent in Bravo Platoon at SEAL Team 3,
operating in Central and South America and
then in Iraq’s combat-heavy Al Anbar Province.
Denver passed along the phrase, “Calm is contagious,”
which he learned in his SEAL training
and implemented throughout his 13-year career
as an active-duty SEAL. To illustrate some of his
points, Denver showed scenes from the feature
film Act of Valor, in which he starred with other
real-life Navy SEALs.
Michael Thompson
The trials and tribulations of raising boys is
a topic all St. Mark’s parents can relate to, and
is the specialty of New York Times best-selling
author Dr. Michael Thompson. The psychologist
and school consultant spoke to a packed house of
parents about how to raise responsible children.
Mixing clinical experience and anecdotes,
Thompson offered advice on raising socially
Lee Berger
In conjunction with the newly opened Perot
Museum of Nature and Science, author and
renowned paleoanthropologist Lee Berger spent
a day on campus sharing his adventures and
experiences. Eugene McDermott Master Teacher
John Mead, a Facebook friend of Berger, asked
him if he would be interested in speaking about
his discovery at the School. Berger graciously
accepted and, with some help from the Perot
Museum, arrived on campus one November day.
He spoke to sixth- and ninth-grade students and
autographed copies of his book. Berger and
Mead then went to the Perot Museum and
hosted a webcast for more than 600 students
across Texas. Berger dined with the science
faculty, then spoke to a packed audience in the
Player of the Week. The award was presented by Fortunes O’Neal and
Angela Enright of Park Cities Ford, who also presented a trophy to
Head Coach Bart Epperson. With half of the season yet to be played,
John had already
amassed more than
2,000 passing yards
and completed
20 touchdowns.
“John is an
amazing student
Coach Epperson.
“He’s a fierce
also a quiet leader.
John is the type
The Player of the Week award singles out student-athletes who
excel in athletic achievement, leadership within the team, and
success in academics and citizenship. Each week, Ford names five
Texas students from each of the public school classifications and one
private school student.
Volleyball
Everyone loves a great comeback story, and
Varsity Volleyball experienced one for the books
this year. After a close defeat at the hands of
Greenhill in 2011 in the final Championship game,
the Lions came back hard this season, sweeping
an early tournament in September. The next
month, they beat both Greenhill and Trinity
Valley to become the #1 seed in the North Zone.
Finally, St. Mark’s made it all the way to the
SPC Championship and had no intention of
going home early. The Lions blew their way
through the bracket, not dropping a single game
against Trinity Valley or Episcopal High School,
before meeting defending champion Greenhill in
the final game. The Lions ran over the Hornets,
3– 0, clinching the SPC title.
Fencing
Several Varsity fencers finished high in the
Texas State Fencing Championships, including
Akshay Malhotra ’16, who finished first in foil. In
addition, Mitchell So ’16 traveled to Louisville,
Crew Christening Honors Former Coach Will Forteith ’96
Thanks to the continuing generosity of an anonymous donor, St. Mark’s
christened the newest scull in its rowing fleet, the William Forteith ’96,
named in honor of the former student, crew coach, and faculty member.
Standing before a crowd of family, friends, students, and alumni, Will offered
his thanks and gratitude to the anonymous donor who has continued to
support and strengthen the rowing program at St. Mark’s. He also challenged
the current team attending the christening to row true and push themselves
to become better men both on and off the water.
After graduating from St. Mark’s, Will rowed for Cornell University’s Lightweight
Crew. After earning his master’s in English and teaching for several
years, he returned to 10600 Preston Road and eventually became Assistant
Head of Middle School. During Will’s tenure as crew coach, the team won
several state championship titles and competed in the U.S. Rowing Youth
National Championship, finishing sixth in the nation.
Kentucky, where he won the Gold Medal for
Men’s Saber (Y14) at USA Fencing’s North
American Cup, rising above 122 competitors
from around the continent.
Soccer
The Varsity Soccer team returned to the
Winter SPC Championships in February as the
defending champions and upheld their title in
a 3–1 final game against Houston Kinkaid. This
was their fourth straight appearance in the finals
and second SPC Championship in a row.
Swimming
The conclusion of the Winter SPC games
found the Varsity Swim Team a full 100 points
ahead of their competition as they secured the
SPC Championship title once again. New SPC
records were set by the Lions for each of the
three relay events. The swimmers also set new
School Records in the 200 Free Relay with a time
of 1:29.65 and the 200 Medley Relay, with a time
of 1:39.95.
fFormer Poet Laureate of the United States
Billy Collins joined international journalist
Sid Balman ’76, noted novelist Curtis Sittenfeld,
and essayist Marion Winik for the sixth annual
Literary Festival. The four guests visited classes
and interacted with students in both an assembly
and a reception.
Victor F. White Master Teacher David Brown,
who worked with Festival Chair Ryan O’Meara ’14
and William Sydney ’15 to coordinate and carry
out the festival, was pleased with the outcome.
“We got writers who not only educated but
also entertained,” Brown said. “The combination
of genders and genres was a success.”
For Brown, it was special to have as notable a
poet as Billy Collins visit the School. Collins, who
was also the Robert E. Dennard Visiting Scholar,
helped to bring a new level of accomplishment
and wit to the walls of Decherd Performance Hall.
“It was surreal at times,” Brown said. “We had
a literary celebrity here. His poetry is easier for
students to understand than the usual poetry
they are assigned. Combining his intelligence
and humor really entertained our students.”
Collins, who led a poetry reading as part of
the Dennard Visiting Scholars Program, started
studying poetry as a teenager.
“When I was in high school, to write poetry
was to become unpopular,” Collins said. “Poetry
was something that didn’t have value.”
His father brought home poetry magazines,
and Collins’s initial forays into poetry blossomed
into one of the most successful poetry careers in
modern history. Still, being named United States
Poet Laureate in 2001 came as a huge shock.
Collins’s triumphs in poetry may go unmatched
in the near future, but anyone can aspire to
relate real life as effortlessly as Collins seems to.
“Poems are a reminder of how amazing it is
to be alive and how fleeting that is,” he said. “It
says, ‘I’m here, I find myself at the conjunction
of these events, and that’s special.’ Poems are a
declaration of presence.”
Debate Team Finishes Strong
St. Mark’s Debate Team members Zach
Burdette ’13 and Charlie Marshall ’14 started the
year off in fine fashion by finishing second at the
prestigious Montgomery Bell Academy Southern
Bell Forum debate tournament in Nashville. MBA
is smaller but more competitive than many Tier 1
tournaments because they allow each school to
bring only its top team. En route to the finals,
Burdette and Marshall compiled a 5 –1 record
in primary rounds with victories over five other
schools from across the nation. Their only preliminary
loss was to Pace Academy, which entered
the tournament as the first-ranked team in the
country. After preliminary competition, Burdette
was recognized as the 17th-best speaker and
Marshall was recognized as the 25th-best speaker.
In elimination rounds, Burdette and Marshall
won a series of decisions, defeating Berkeley
Prep and Greenhill School, and avenging their
preliminary-round loss to Pace Academy. In
finals, they were defeated by Stratford Academy,
the number-one preseason team that won the
first two major tournaments of the year.
This was the School’s fifth appearance at the
finals of the MBA tournament. St. Mark’s won
the tournament in 1989, 1990, 2002, and 2011.
Weaving history, biology, ethics, and
romance into a page-turning thriller is no easy
task, but John Sellars ’89 has done just that in
his new book The Dark Rift. Though the story is
set in the near future, the plot pulls from the
Spanish conquistadors to the Mayan prophets.
But beyond a stirring narrative, the very presentation
of the book is something unique. Symbols
take the place of character names in dialogue
and ancient maps and symbols dot each page.
John co-wrote the book with Christopher
Haines, whom he met at Dartmouth College.
Alumni Continue to Lead the Way on Campus
Members of the
Class of 2003 at their
5th Reunion Party.
Focused on a Fifth Year
Alumni participation in the St. Mark’s Fund
reached 53 percent last year, surpassing the
50 percent mark for the fourth year in a row.
This year will make five, and the Alumni Board
is ready to partner with the Alumni Association
to make sure their goal is achieved.
The Alumni Board believes that Marksmen
love their School and want to maintain their
connections because they understand the lifelong
impact that St. Mark’s has on their lives. In
searching for different metrics, it became clear
that Alumni giving is one equitable measurement
that allows us to compare the effectiveness
of the Alumni Program each year. Since 2007,
the Alumni Board has used Alumni participation
in the St. Mark’s Fund as a measurement of how
engaged the Association is with the School.
Since taking on the participation challenge,
the St. Mark’s Alumni Association has been able
to boast the highest rates in the nation. Few
colleges and very few independent schools can
claim to reach the 50 percent mark year in and
year out. This new normal has been an exciting
point of pride for Marksmen young and old. As
2012–2013 comes to a close in June, the Alumni
Board and a dedicated group of Class Agents
and other volunteers will work to move the
needle toward 50 percent.
St. Mark’s Alumni are at the top of their
fields across the globe, leading companies and
changing the world. Alumni Participation is just
one more way in which our Association is
leading the way.
Reunion Program and Alumni Weekend
This year marks the first that a reunion cycle
will celebrate its second Alumni Weekend, and
the Classes of 3’s & 8’s have their sights set on
making it a weekend to remember.
Beginning in October, the 10 Class Reunion
Committees met to begin planning for the April
weekend and their Reunion festivities. Each
Committee was focused on several key goals:
first, to plan the best series of events possible;
second, to spread the word to their classmates
and ensure record-setting attendance; third,
to plan a Reunion Gift that would challenge
their class and the classes that will follow them
in the coming years. Those early ideas are now
in motion, and this April looks to be one of the
best 10600 Preston Road has seen.
Alumni Weekend Chairman Carl Sewell ’02
and his Committee members are also hard at
work planning for the Weekend. Partnered with
the Alumni Office, their mission is to ensure a
great series of popular events. This year’s lineup
will include the Alumni Golf Tournament at
Alumni Dinner honoring 40-year faculty
members John Stutsman, Bobbi Mailer, and
Alice Oltrogge and Distinguished Alumnus Kurt
Eichenwald ’79, the Family Cookout, and much
more. As always, Alumni Weekend will have
something for everyone.
As stated in their early planning, the Reunion
Committees will help drive a majority of the
traffic for the Weekend. As we enter the last few
months of planning, Committee members will
be reaching out to every single classmate,
making sure they know about the weekend and
encouraging them to join old friends and faculty
members back home on campus.
Committees will also continue to encourage
participation in the Reunion Class Gift program.
Since 2007, Reunion classes have done their part
to build excitement around giving to the School
and to grow the St. Mark’s Fund. With their help,
total Alumni giving to the St. Mark’s Fund
continues to eclipse $1 million each year, and
for the past several, Alumni have given more
than current parents. The 10 Reunion Classes
also account for nearly 40 percent of total
Alumni giving to the St. Mark’s Fund each year.
The work of the Reunion Committees is
invaluable to the School. They challenge themselves
and other classes by raising expectations.
They ask every member of the Alumni Association,
in a Reunion year, to pay tribute to the impact
that St. Mark’s had in their own life and to help
strengthen the School for generations to come.
This year, several classes have their sights set
on breaking Reunion records. The Class of 2008
is working tirelessly to set a 5th Reunion Record
for participation. The Class of 2003 has already
set a 10th Reunion Record for giving and is
planning to raise the bar even further.
As Alumni Weekend and the Reunions
approach, the Classes of 3’s & 8’s will continue to
do their part to drive attendance and participation.
Their shared mission will certainly leave a mark
on campus to challenge future generations.
aAs the new School year began last September, the
Executive Committee of the Alumni Board sat
down to focus on the coming year. Their objective
was clear, to support the mission of the School
by building the best Alumni Association in the
nation, as demonstrated by engagement and
giving. Their goal was bold, and to execute their
plan, the Alumni Board, partnered with the Office
of Development & Alumni Relations, will target
four specific areas: (1) the continued growth of
the Alumni Weekend and Reunion Programs,
(2) events that allow alumni, of all ages, to connect
with fellow Marksmen, the faculty, and the
School, (3) to maintain more than 50 percent
Alumni giving in the St. Mark’s Fund, and
(4) to strategically grow the Alumni Network.
Each year, these goals are met with an
extraordinarily responsive and supportive
Alumni Community. Marksmen young and old
continue to engage with the School and spend
their time and resources to ensure a viable
Alumni Association that strengthens the School.
Alumni Leadership Speaker Series
The ALSS is a major focus for the Alumni
Board each year, with the goal of engaging
community members in social, business, and
cultural settings. The Speaker Series launched
several years ago as a way to provide more educational
Speakers include visiting scholars, faculty
members, and alumni. This year’s program kicked
off in December with Arnie Holtberg and more
than 130 guests enjoying the Holiday Luncheon
at a new location in Arlington Hall at Lee Park.
On the evening of February 25, more than 250
their 15th Reunion) a priority, by hosting
events and communicating the importance
of engagement before they ever leave campus.
This year at Thanksgiving, the Young Alumni
Holiday Party saw increased attendance, as did
the College-Age Holiday Luncheon in December.
Both events brought together almost 200 alumni
and guests to reconnect. The on-campus Student
Alumni Association also continues to flourish
under the strong Class of 2013 leadership of
Parker Matthews and Umang Shah. This group
has already spent meetings focused on learning
about philanthropy and the Alumni Network,
meeting with Alumni Board leaders, and sending
care packages to College-Age Alumni.
tThe Centennial Challenge continues to transform
the campus and strengthen the overall St. Mark’s
experience. A recent gift was announced that
has paved the way for the acquisition of a new
pipe organ for the St. Mark’s Chapel.
On February 26, 2013, St. Mark’s recognized
many of its most generous donors at the annual
Headmaster’s Council Dinner, graciously hosted
by current parents Harlan and Kathy Crow.
Kathy Crow is a member of the Executive
Committee of the Board of Trustees and serves
as Co-Chair of The Centennial Challenge. After a
warm welcome from Mrs. Crow, Board of
Trustees President Randall Fojtasek ’81 thanked
the many alumni, parents, and friends in attendance
and expressed his enthusiasm about the
continuing progress of the Campaign, highlighting
several important achievements. He
noted that more than 250 donors have made
gifts of $25,000 or more, including 30 donors
who’ve given $1 million or more. Mr. Fojtasek
highlighted the success of the Alumni Financial
Aid Challenge, the impact of the new buildings,
the addition of newly endowed faculty positions,
and that nearly $80 million of the more
than $100 million in commitments had already
been collected. “The final few months,” said
Mr. Fojtasek, “will be the most important and
possibly the most challenging,” and he stressed
that more work remains as we near the $110
million goal. After concluding his remarks, he
introduced Eugene McDermott Headmaster
Arnie Holtberg.
Mr. Holtberg echoed his personal thanks to
the assembled crowd for their individual and
collective generosity and then made a very
special announcement. He introduced and
recognized Life Trustee and former Board of
Trustees President Elliott “Tony” Roosevelt and
noted that Mr. Roosevelt and his wife, JoAnne,
have committed $2 million to support the acquisition
of a new pipe organ for the St. Mark’s
Chapel. Arnie thanked the couple for their leadership
and acknowledged other members of the
Roosevelt family in attendance. The Roosevelts
have four children, including two sons who
attended the School, Toby ’81 and David ’89.
Their daughter, Liz, is married to a St. Mark’s
graduate, Seth Kelly ’84, a former Alumni
Association President. Mr. Holtberg noted the
Roosevelts’s longstanding support of the Chapel
program, having been major contributors to the
construction of the building more than 20 years
ago, having funded the installation of the
This new custom instrument is being designed
and built in Quebec, Canada by the worldrenowned
Letourneau Organ Company. It is
expected to be completed within two years and
will be installed in the St. Mark’s Chapel and
fine-tuned “voiced” to fit the acoustic surroundings.
The organ will not only support daily
Chapel services but many special events,
including a variety of choral services such as
Evensong, Lessons & Carols, Baccalaureate,
weddings, and choir concerts.
A new pipe organ was one of the specific
campus priorities identified at the outset of The
Centennial Challenge. The existing organ served
the School well for many decades but has experienced
significant deterioration over time and
has been failing for a number of years. In addition,
the instrument lacks the range and capacity
to adequately support the musical repertoire of
the St. Mark’s Choir. The new organ will provide
tremendous breadth and range and will be
perfectly suited to our specific needs and space.
A Planning Committee consisting of faculty,
administrators, and volunteers was assembled
several years ago and has worked consistently to
determine exactly what the School’s need would
be for the next 50 –100 years and to make sure the
instrument is ideally designed for the St. Mark’s
Chapel program. The School hired David Heller
of Trinity University, a noted pipe organ expert,
to serve as a consultant during this process.
Mr. Heller helped the committee evaluate the
size, scope, usage, and potential cost of the
project, a task similar to the process of planning
for a new building. Organs are tailor-made to fit
the space in which they reside, so this new organ
would be custom-built to the exact specifications
of the St. Mark’s Chapel.
The Committee then went through an
exhaustive process of evaluating a variety of
organ builders from around the world. Members
of the Committee visited a wide variety of facilities
to hear instruments that had been installed
by different builders in different venues. After
months of careful review, three builders were
selected to come to campus for a full day of
interviews with the entire Committee and
present their concepts for the new organ. Once
the Committee agreed on the selection of
Letourneau, the School moved the process
forward to ensure completion of the project
in a timely fashion.
This exciting project would not have come to
fruition without the tireless efforts of many
volunteers, nor without the financial generosity
of several donors, including the Roosevelt family,
whose ongoing commitment to the School will
impact students for generations to come.
Alumni Meet Financial Aid Challenge
In April 2009, the Alumni Financial
Aid Challenge was initiated by two graduates
as a way to encourage alumni to
participate in The Centennial Challenge
by making new gifts to support student
financial aid. These two donors offered
to match dollar-for-dollar all new gifts
from alumni for financial aid up to a
total of $5 million. The response to
this initiative has been simply overwhelming.
Alumni from classes as early
as the 1930s and as recent as the Class
of 2012 have made new commitments
in support of the Challenge. In
December 2012, it was announced
that alumni giving to financial aid had
officially surpassed the $5 million goal.
The Alumni Financial Aid Challenge
was started by Casey McManemin ’79
(and his wife Megan) and Bob Roberts ’64
(and his wife Eveline), who each
pledged $2.5 million to establish the
Challenge, with an ultimate goal of
raising $10 million for the Financial
Aid Endowment. These two principal
gifts represented the two largest
single commitments to financial aid
in the School’s history, but more important,
they set in motion the opportunity
for all alumni to participate in
one of the cornerstone priorities of
The Centennial Challenge.
Casey McManemin ’79 commented,
opportunity to make a difference in
hundreds and thousands of boys’ lives.”
Bob Roberts ’64 added, “St. Mark’s
yourself and to excel. My St. Mark’s
experience enabled me to welcome
challenges in business and contributed
significantly to my success in life.
to deserving students.”
Eugene McDermott Headmaster
Arnie Holtberg remarked, “Ensuring that
St. Mark’s is accessible to the boys who
will both contribute to our community
and benefit from our education is
among the School’s highest priorities.
This challenge will result in a nearly
25 percent increase in the School’s
financial aid resources. Its impact
will be felt by every boy who attends
this School.”
Mr. Holtberg added, “I am deeply
grateful to Casey, Megan, Bob, and
Eveline for their extraordinary support
of and commitment to St. Mark’s. The
kind of financial leadership they are
providing supports excellence on our
campus each and every day. These gifts
will bring us one step closer toward our
goal of making St. Mark’s accessible
Faculty Support Continues to Grow
Another pillar of The Centennial
Challenge, faculty support, continues
to receive unprecedented levels of
affirmation from donors to the School.
Thanks to The Centennial Challenge,
Master Teaching Chairs have been
added, professional development
opportunities have expanded, and
endowed funds for faculty support
have been created.
In October 2012, Tamara and
David Campbell ’86, surprised the
Lower School faculty at their weekly
meeting by announcing the endowment
of the Campbell Lower School
Faculty Support Fund.
The Campbells read the following
statement during the announcement
of their gift: “It is with great admiration
for your dedication and hard work and
immense gratitude for its impact on
our son, Colin, that we wish to share
with you this Fund. All of you have
devoted your careers to developing
the unlimited potential of the very
youngest Marksmen. It is truly amazing
to witness those high expectations come
to fruition over the four years of Lower
School. St. Mark’s has an incredible
Lower School because of your efforts
and your commitment to excellence
for its youngest students. For that,
we are most grateful.”
“Joe was a natural leader that did
community service because it really
mattered to him. He made real lasting
Supporting Today’s Needs
Through the St. Mark’s Fund
The St. Mark’s Fund, the School’s
annual and most important fundraising
campaign, is a critical component of
The Centennial Challenge, and the
ongoing success of this initiative has
been key to the overall success of
The Campaign. Throughout the
duration of The Centennial Challenge,
the goal for the St. Mark’s Fund has
increased every year, and every year
that heightened goal has been met.
Tuition and fees pay roughly
68 percent of the cost of a St. Mark’s
education, with St. Mark’s Fund contributions
and endowments making up
the difference. St. Mark’s is fortunate
to benefit from alumni and parent
participation rates that are among the
highest in the country. Last year,
88 percent of parents and 53 percent
of alumni participated.
The St. Mark’s Fund is a meaningful
way for every member of our community
to participate in The Centennial
Challenge, and this annual show of
support ensures excellence across
our campus and affirms the good
CURTAIN CALL
Revival and Tribute to Beloved Director
It is hard to imagine St. Mark’s without a Fine Arts Program. Today, the campus is filled with
young Marksmen sketching charcoal drawings of the Chapel, rehearsing Shakespeare in the amphitheater,
and practicing violin outside the band hall. But there was a time when music, theater, and art were not
components of a Marksman education.
That all changed on one fateful day in February 1964, when a young artist and scholar named Tony
Vintcent bicycled into Dallas. His bicycle gave out in front of an all-boys prep school at 10600 Preston
Road. He parked his bike, and for nearly a decade, Vintcent called St. Mark’s his home.
As Vintcent settled into campus as a teacher and the “Pied Piper of Davis Hall,” he approached St. Mark’s
Headmaster Chris Berrisford with a simple and somewhat theatrical request: “Please, sir, I want some
more.” But unlike the cruel cook in Oliver Twist, Mr. Berrisford saw the vision that Tony had for the School
and offered Mr. Vintcent far more than just another spoonful of gruel. From that conversation, the modern
Fine Arts Department was born. Vintcent was later named the School’s first Fine Arts Department Chair
and under his reign the arts became a
central pillar of the St. Mark’s education.
During his years, numerous legendary
teachers found a home at 10600 Preston
Road. Some, including Alice Oltrogge,
Bill Kysor, and Mary Ann Livengood,
are still at St. Mark’s, teaching boys how
to draw, sculpt, and sing. More than
that, the boys learned how to dream.
During his nearly 10 years at St. Mark’s,
Vintcent’s teaching and passion inspired
hundreds of young men.
Vintcent’s lasting impression was also
felt by an intimate group of 200 student
actors and actresses who comprised the
Harlequin Players. From 1965 to 1972,
the Harlequin Players, under Vintcent’s
direction, produced summer stock
theater. The company put on a wide
range of productions, from musicals
and comedies, to Shakespearean
classics and historical dramas. One
special rule of the Harlequins was that
every student had to rotate roles after
each play, from actor, to stagehand,
to publicity, and so on. As a result,
at the end of each summer, the
Harlequin Players produced a solid
stock of well-rounded thespians.
www.smtexas.org/HarlequinPlayers
During their eight-season run, the Harlequin Players produced dozens
of plays with the help of hundreds of students. When you consider all of the
photos, playbills, newspaper reviews, rosters, and reunions, it adds up to a lot
of media. In 2012, as the Harlequins prepared their reunion to honor Tony
Vintcent, member Michael Jung ’72 conceived a plan to organize and curate all
of the media surrounding the company and their performances. Working with
Michael, St. Mark’s Office of Development & Alumni Relations created a special
page on the School’s website dedicated to the Harlequin Players.
Users can now browse through each season and view photos, programs,
news clippings, and summaries of each production, as well as the four reunions
held since 1985. A full roster also lists every member of the company, with
special pages dedicated to Tony Vintcent and Bill Hootkins ’66, who went on to
big-screen fame, appearing in Indiana Jones, Batman, and Star Wars.
Exactly 40 years after their final
performance, the Harlequin Players
returned to St. Mark’s for one more
curtain call, and to give recognition to
the man who started it all. On Friday,
singing in harmony, and prepared for
their big premiere of Under Milk Wood,
a play by Dylan Thomas, which the
Harlequins last performed in 1968.
Performing to a full house, the lights
finally dimmed and Vintcent welcomed
the audience, noting, “This was a hell
of a lot easier when they were 16.” As
Vintcent set the poetic tone of the play
with his opening narration, the cast on
stage seemed to be transported back in
time and, for a few hours, the Harlequin
Players were in their prime.
Mike Shampain ’61:
Menter B. Terrill Society
Mike “Mickey” Shampain ’61 has fond memories of
his time at 10600 Preston Road. “I greatly enjoyed the
fellowship with classmates, friends, and with teachers,”
Mike recalls. “The structure, the classes, the opportunity
to participate in a range of activities, not to mention
the effect that St. Mark’s had on my spiritual side — the
School did a great deal for me, and I appreciate the
philosophy of building the boy into a complete man.”
Since Mike graduated in 1961, he has enjoyed staying connected to his classmates
through events and reunions, particularly his 50th Reunion. “The Reunion just felt
like we picked up where we left off. The fellowship and camaraderie that our class felt
while we were in school was still present, 50 years later. I think coming back together
gave us all an even greater appreciation for our time at St. Mark’s,” Mike says.
He decided to honor his father’s and mother’s memory by creating the Shampain
Family Scholarship in 1998 with an outright gift to the Campaign for St. Mark’s.
Through their many volunteer efforts in the Nashville community, Mike and his wife,
Pam, saw many bright students who never received the opportunities to advance their
education, so they wanted to provide those opportunities for students at St. Mark’s.
“Pam and I came to realize just how much St. Mark’s does to shape lives, and we wanted
to be a part of that process,” Mike says. As members of the Menter B. Terrill Society, Mike
and Pam have included St. Mark’s in their estate plans, ensuring that the School will
continue to benefit from their generosity and that the Shampain Family Scholarship
will continue to grow.
St. Mark’s has established the Menter B. Terrill Society to honor alumni and friends
who have included St. Mark’s in their long-term estate planning. Terrill Society members
who are at least 65 years of age will be recognized in The Centennial Challenge if they
notify the School of their intentions. If you have included St. Mark’s in your estate plans or
would like more information about the Menter B. Terrill Society, please contact Scott Jolly
in the Office of Development at 214.346.8123 or jollys@smtexas.org.
