(a) would the Minister indicate what sum of money was committed<br />

to the Emancipation Support Committee to cover the expenses<br />

incurred;<br />

(b) has this sum been paid; and<br />

(c) if not, why not and when will the payment be made?<br />

Thank you, Mr. President. On behalf of my colleague the Minister of<br />

Education, the reply to question No. 76 is as follows in reply to part (a):<br />

The estimated cost of hosting the African History quiz competition was<br />

$207,700;<br />

Answer to parts (b) and (c):<br />

The Ministry is presently processing the payment in the name of the<br />

Emancipation Support Committee. In accordance with the financial<br />

regulations, the Ministry of Education requested and received on April18,<br />

2012 the final document required to effect the payment from the<br />

Emancipation Support Committee. To date the Emancipation Support<br />

Committee has received $25,000; a total of $182,700 will be paid by Friday<br />

May 11, 2012.<br />

Sen. Hinds: By way of supplemental, is the Minister able to demonstrate<br />

to this Senate and the country, the effectiveness and the worthwhile of the<br />

effect of the history competition in the context of emancipation celebrations,<br />

and the celebration of the United Nations International Year of People of<br />

African Descent?<br />
