NSDCC – 79 th Annual Report 2005-2006 SEVENTY - EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT PRESIDENTS REPORT The season 2005/2006, Norths 78 th in the Grade Competition, was again an extremely successful year. Both as teams and individuals Norths’ players again achieved success. This year saw 1 st Grade, 2 nd Grade, 3 rd Grade and 4 th Grade reach the semi-finals. Unfortunately due to the weather both 1 st Grade and 4 th Grade failed to play their respective games and as the games were to be against Clubs that finished higher on the ladder than them they were knocked out of their competitions. Congratulations to our 1 st Grade captains Jared Turner and Nathan Hauritz and our 4 th Grade Captain Michael Chambers and their teams on making the Semi Finals. 2 nd Grade and 3 rd Grades made it through to the Final and although they were beaten both showed there is a lot to look forward to with the both of these teams containing a good mix of experience and some very good young players. Congratulations to Ben Torenbeek and Jon Hopes and their teams for making the Final and hopefully we can win next season. 5 th Grade finished the season in 5 th position and very nearly made it 5 teams in the Semi- Finals. Under 18s finished down the ladder as did the Under 16 Lord Taverners. The Over 40s came top in their competition. It is great to see some of the names that played for Norths with distinction in the past still enjoying the game and being around the Club. Our Ladies team won the 2 nd Division Ladies Competition for the second year in a row. Congratulations to Michelle Wielemaker (Coach) and Courtney Jones (Captain) and the players on a great effort. The Final was washed out this year but the Ladies were Minor Premiers and rightly deserved the Premiership. Norths Representative Players list is again outstanding with the following players reaching higher honours: James Hopes continued where he left off last season and played One Day International Cricket. James was part of the successful Australian Team that won the Tri-Series against Sri Lanka and South Africa. James was selected in the Australian One Day Squad to tour Bangladesh. Congratulations James Mitchell Johnson made his One Day International Debut. Mitchell has just returned from touring with the Australian Team to South Africa. Mitchell was selected in the Australian One Day Squad and Test Squad to tour Bangladesh. Congratulations Mitchell on a great year. Jimmy Maher, Clinton Perren, Chris Hartley, Brendan Nash, James Hopes, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz and Grant Sullivan all were in the Pura Cup winning Qld Bulls squad. Congratulations guys on a great win. Greg Chiesa was chosen to attend the Commonwealth Bank School of Excellence. Ben Dunk was selected to play for the Qld Academy of Sport. Ben Dunk, Dom Michael and Wally Wright were selected in the Qld U19 Team. Ben was selected as a reserve for the Australian U 19 Team. Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club - 6
NSDCC – 79 th Annual Report 2005-2006 Ben Mainhardt and Kim Brown were members of the Imparja Cup winning Qld Team. I congratulate Club Coaches Brett Mortimer and Michael Mainhardt and Chairman of Selectors Jon Hopes on the fantastic job they have done with our Players Development. This season Brendan Nash joined illustrious company in playing 100 First Grade games for Norths. Congratulations Brendan. Not all games are won on the field and I again take this opportunity to thank all members of the Executive Committee who have worked tirelessly for our Players over the last 12 months. Secretary Bill Keene, Treasurer and First Grade Scorer Bill Hopes, Vice President Alan Scott, Registrar and Statistician Lorix Bertling and Committee members Michelle Wielemaker, Jon Hopes, Jim Whittle, Glyn Netto, Bryan Phelan, Michael Mainhardt and Vern Crowther. A special mention must be made of Vern and Pam Crowther who again ran the canteen this season. Thank-you for all the time and effort you have put in it is greatly appreciated by the Players and Members. Jon Hopes was again a member of the Qld Cricket Grade Committee. The time, effort and passion that Hopesy puts into the game of cricket is widely appreciated and his views are highly regarded and I congratulate him on a successful year as Chairman of Selectors and Captain of 3 rd Grade. Thank you, Jon. I would like to thank Glyn Netto the Secretary, Merv Buckley the President and Glen Carey the Vice President of Wilston Norths Juniors for their continued support for Norths. I do not think Norths have ever been in a better financial position than we are now. Bill Hopes and Bill Keene have been instrumental in Norths being successful with a number of Grants from the State Govt Office of Sport and Recreation and the Brisbane City Council. The 2005 Calendar year saw Norths spend $82,700.00 on Capital Expenditure upgrading the Cricket Facility at Shawsportz plus $33,000.00 on our Licence Fee to Shawsportz. That is around $115,000.00 plus the monies required for the general running of the club, like $8,000 on Cricket Balls that is spent each year. This is a truly great effort by the entire Executive Committee. The 1 st Grade Team and the Executive Committee would like to thank Roger Harris the 1 st Grade Manager for his continued support. In the Australia Day Awards this year one of Norths Old Boys, Kev Maher received an Order of Australia medal in recognition for his contribution to cricket, particularly in North Queensland. I sent a letter to Kev congratulating him on this award and again on behalf of the Club I congratulate him and the Maher family on this Award. The Club would like to thank Qld Cricket for all their support and I would especially thank them for the financial assistance Grade Clubs receive throughout year. It is very much appreciated and needed. The facilities at Shawsportz are second to none in Qld Cricket and for that we thank Dennis Wilson and his team at Shawsportz. The fields and wickets have been superb and the Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club - 7
