SEVENTY - EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
PRESIDENTS REPORT
The season 2005/2006, Norths 78 th in the Grade Competition, was again an extremely
successful year. Both as teams and individuals Norths’ players again achieved success.
This year saw 1 st Grade, 2 nd Grade, 3 rd Grade and 4 th Grade reach the semi-finals.
Unfortunately due to the weather both 1 st Grade and 4 th Grade failed to play their respective
games and as the games were to be against Clubs that finished higher on the ladder than
them they were knocked out of their competitions. Congratulations to our 1 st Grade captains
Jared Turner and Nathan Hauritz and our 4 th Grade Captain Michael Chambers and their
teams on making the Semi Finals.
2 nd Grade and 3 rd Grades made it through to the Final and although they were beaten both
showed there is a lot to look forward to with the both of these teams containing a good mix of
experience and some very good young players. Congratulations to Ben Torenbeek and Jon
Hopes and their teams for making the Final and hopefully we can win next season.
5 th Grade finished the season in 5 th position and very nearly made it 5 teams in the Semi-
Finals.
Under 18s finished down the ladder as did the Under 16 Lord Taverners.
The Over 40s came top in their competition. It is great to see some of the names that played
for Norths with distinction in the past still enjoying the game and being around the Club.
Our Ladies team won the 2 nd Division Ladies Competition for the second year in a row.
Congratulations to Michelle Wielemaker (Coach) and Courtney Jones (Captain) and the
players on a great effort. The Final was washed out this year but the Ladies were Minor
Premiers and rightly deserved the Premiership.
Norths Representative Players list is again outstanding with the following players reaching
higher honours:
James Hopes continued where he left off last season and played One Day International
Cricket. James was part of the successful Australian Team that won the Tri-Series against
Sri Lanka and South Africa. James was selected in the Australian One Day Squad to tour
Bangladesh. Congratulations James
Mitchell Johnson made his One Day International Debut. Mitchell has just returned from
touring with the Australian Team to South Africa. Mitchell was selected in the Australian One
Day Squad and Test Squad to tour Bangladesh. Congratulations Mitchell on a great year.
Jimmy Maher, Clinton Perren, Chris Hartley, Brendan Nash, James Hopes, Mitchell Johnson,
Nathan Hauritz and Grant Sullivan all were in the Pura Cup winning Qld Bulls squad.
Congratulations guys on a great win.
Greg Chiesa was chosen to attend the Commonwealth Bank School of Excellence.
Ben Dunk was selected to play for the Qld Academy of Sport.
Ben Dunk, Dom Michael and Wally Wright were selected in the Qld U19 Team. Ben was
selected as a reserve for the Australian U 19 Team.
NSDCC – 79 th Annual Report 2005-2006
Ben Mainhardt and Kim Brown were members of the Imparja Cup winning Qld Team.
I congratulate Club Coaches Brett Mortimer and Michael Mainhardt and Chairman of
Selectors Jon Hopes on the fantastic job they have done with our Players Development.
This season Brendan Nash joined illustrious company in playing 100 First Grade games for
Norths. Congratulations Brendan.
Not all games are won on the field and I again take this opportunity to thank all members of
the Executive Committee who have worked tirelessly for our Players over the last 12 months.
Secretary Bill Keene, Treasurer and First Grade Scorer Bill Hopes, Vice President Alan
Scott, Registrar and Statistician Lorix Bertling and Committee members Michelle
Wielemaker, Jon Hopes, Jim Whittle, Glyn Netto, Bryan Phelan, Michael Mainhardt and Vern
Crowther.
A special mention must be made of Vern and Pam Crowther who again ran the canteen this
season. Thank-you for all the time and effort you have put in it is greatly appreciated by the
Players and Members.
Jon Hopes was again a member of the Qld Cricket Grade Committee. The time, effort and
passion that Hopesy puts into the game of cricket is widely appreciated and his views are
highly regarded and I congratulate him on a successful year as Chairman of Selectors and
Captain of 3 rd Grade. Thank you, Jon.
I would like to thank Glyn Netto the Secretary, Merv Buckley the President and Glen Carey
the Vice President of Wilston Norths Juniors for their continued support for Norths.
I do not think Norths have ever been in a better financial position than we are now. Bill Hopes
and Bill Keene have been instrumental in Norths being successful with a number of Grants
from the State Govt Office of Sport and Recreation and the Brisbane City Council.
The 2005 Calendar year saw Norths spend $82,700.00 on Capital Expenditure upgrading the
Cricket Facility at Shawsportz plus $33,000.00 on our Licence Fee to Shawsportz. That is
around $115,000.00 plus the monies required for the general running of the club, like $8,000
on Cricket Balls that is spent each year. This is a truly great effort by the entire Executive
Committee.
The 1 st Grade Team and the Executive Committee would like to thank Roger Harris the 1 st
Grade Manager for his continued support.
In the Australia Day Awards this year one of Norths Old Boys, Kev Maher received an Order
of Australia medal in recognition for his contribution to cricket, particularly in North
Queensland. I sent a letter to Kev congratulating him on this award and again on behalf of
the Club I congratulate him and the Maher family on this Award.
The Club would like to thank Qld Cricket for all their support and I would especially thank
them for the financial assistance Grade Clubs receive throughout year. It is very much
appreciated and needed.
The facilities at Shawsportz are second to none in Qld Cricket and for that we thank Dennis
Wilson and his team at Shawsportz. The fields and wickets have been superb and the
scoring of the fields after games is testament to that. Dennis if you could pass on to all your
staff our appreciation.
Players, Coaching Staff and Supporters for contributing to another great year for Norths. I
REPORTS (from Captains, Managers and Coaches)
FIRST GRADE
The 2005/06 season saw Northern Suburbs perform very well in both the XXXX First Grade
Competition and the abbreviated First Grade One Day tournament. Norths finished in third place on
the ladder with the Semi-Final being washed out without a ball being bowled. Norths suffered only
one loss during the one day tournament to a talented and tough Wynnum –Manly side. As a
consequence, Norths failed to participate in Semi Finals of this competition for the first time in three
seasons. While the completion of both competitions was not ideal in terms of the result, the club had
much to be proud of in 2005/2006.
Norths had two players represent Australia during the last year. All-rounder James Hopes and left
arm quick Mitchell Johnson both represented their country for the first time. This is simply an
outstanding achievement for these players and the culture of the club. Chris Hartley toured Pakistan
with Australia A, Jim Maher captained his state to a Pura Cup sensation, and Clinton Perren played
once more with distinction for his club and state. Brendan Nash returned to the First Class arena with
a bang in Perth, Nathan Hauritz played both forms of the game for his state and Grant Sullivan played
in a number of 2 nd X1 fixtures. Ben Dunk was selected in the Australian Under19 squad as a shadow
player for the youth World Cup. All factors considered, it was a great year, once again, for a club that
places the priority of developing young talent as its core value.
On the park for the team itself, Norths had a fine season under the leadership of both Jarred Turner
and Nathan Hauritz. Jarred started the year with confidence and as a consequence his team won
some challenging early fixtures. Nathan then took over the reins at Christmas, allowing Jarred to
concentrate on his own game. This change brought about a new aggressive form of cricket to be
played and drove Northern Suburbs to a semi-final. Nathan led with calmness and aggression. He
bred confidence in all players and brought fresh ideas to the selection table. In short, he was a
revelation.
Brendan Nash and Clinton Perren led the way with the bat. Both players have now represented the
club on 100 occasions and both rate as two of the club’s all time great players. They both work the
ball well and balance power with precision. Their footwork is crisp and both blokes present a desire to
score runs at every opportunity; skills the following players can all draw upon. Adam Daniels arrived
from the Gold Coast and played some steady innings in his role as an Opener. Nathan Hauritz also
displayed his qualities as a genuine all rounder at this level. Jarred Turner, Steven Nottle (before a
serious pool party injury), Andrew Michael and Greg Chiesa played some quality innings also. Yet the
real find of the season was former Queensland Under 19 prodigy Wade Townsend. He scored his
maiden First Grade century and finally began to drive his considerable talent towards the next level.
Wade is a popular, dedicated team mate and illustrated the potential to play at the next level. He must
now crash through the door.
The bowling was led by Nathan Hauritz. His second place finish in the Peter Burge Medal while only
playing ten weeks of the year illustrated his dominance. He bowled with guile and confidence, often
dismissing the best players of the other side whilst constructing partnerships with a group of
exceptionally talented cricketers. Greg Chiesa had a fine season, improving his consistency as he
strives for the breakout year that will provide him with opportunities at the next level. Grant Sullivan
had his best year for the club and promises to be on the verge of something special. Grant toiled
away on surfaces that did not suit his style and this year bowled a fuller length to produce more
positive results. Jarred Turner continues to be one of the premier spinners in Brisbane and doesn’t
get much of bowl. He averaged less than 20 with the ball, again confirming his potential to step up
into a key role next season. Peter Baker once again provided further evidence of his First Grade
ability with a fine season. He is highly rated by all of his team mates. Adam Lavis, Rob Fitzgerald and
Jordan Buckley provided a strong back-up to this impressive crew. Include Damien Mackenzie, Dean
Bertling, Andrew Carnell and Josh Kemp to this list and the club had two genuine First Grade attacks
by seasons end.
NSDCC – 79 th Annual Report 2005-2006
The side was well serviced by coach Brett Mortimer and manager Roger Harris. Both figures were
appreciated and respected. Bill Hopes, the scorer, in his swansong, scored well and ran post match
interviews with passion (and precision).
Bill, your time and effort to the team was appreciated deeply by all. Simply, this was a brilliant
performance by the support staff. The Crowther family was in place at 8:30 to provide breakfast for
the troops (set up the ground, organize the Shed…..etc) and their support was valued… in particular
by Johnson, Chiesa and Sullivan.
The First Grade side now looks forward to the new season and hopes for a continued level of
success on all fronts. Well done to the club on a fine season and as the future is certainly bright.
ALAN PETTIGREW SHIELD (SEC0ND GRADE)
Well we made our first finals campaign in over 5 seasons and it was a really positive experience. We
fell short at the final hurdle but we ran a good race. Making the grand final proved one thing for us; we
can put all the necessary ingredients together on the day and come up with a result. Whilst we didn’t
win the final our collective desire to pull off a victory kept us in the match right up until the last session
on the last day. Well done to all players.
This season has been a success and has been built upon from previous seasons. Players have
developed greatly combining their abundance of talent, as we have always had, with greater
experience and a closer understanding of our own games. We have trained harder than previous
seasons and with Morto organizing tough but beneficial pre season sessions we go into seasons
mentally ready and eager to perform- that gets us our good start and we must continue to have this
approach. I must congratulate Morto for his year round effort to ensure we perform through the
season. Brett also puts a lot of emotional investment into the players and feels the losses and
victories like any of the players. Thanks Morto.
It’s funny how individual stats tell a different tale to actual team results, as in previous seasons run
scoring in the club had been pretty good however teams were not making finals and this season with
only a handful of big performances the top 4 grades embarked on a finals campaign. Two things can
be taken from this; 1) We have made team success individual success ensuring we do just enough to
win, and 2) its our bowlers who have taken on the opposition and delivering results for us and this is
true, I don’t think there has been a bigger haul of 5 fa’s in recent times. Adam Lavis our highest
wicket taker for the season was a real spearhead for us and lead from the front with fantastic effort,
pace, lift and his blatantly obvious aggression and deliberate attempts to mentally disintegrate
batsman of any calibre. Lavo - great season mate. Jordan Buckley once again proved his value as a
very elusive type of bowler who I’m still sure is underrated by opposition players. Jordo collected
several bags including a monumental effort in the grand final after bowling 40 overs - another great
effort this year Jordo. Dean Bertling unfortunately missed out on the final XI but played a crucial role
in our season. Dean has the ability to maintain line and length in tough situations and applies real
pressure at one end. Dean can also produce spurts of real pace and lift and can swing the new ball
in. When Berto gets this mix all at once he is a true test of any good bat. Good season Berto -
onwards and upwards mate.
Peter Baker, Robbie Fitzgerald and Josh Kemp rounded off our other quicks/meds for the year.
Bakes saved his best for the grand final being our rock in the attack. He consistently beat the bat and
built pressure to take important wickets. Bakes was a consistent performer all year in both 1’s and 2’s
and proved his worth, he’s also handy with the verbal. Robbie and Kempy probably didn’t get the
results they are capable of with the ball but they were extremely valuable with the bat and contributed
Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club - 10
NSDCC – 79 th Annual Report 2005-2006
to our overall success for the year. Andrew Carnell was a revelation for us as we have never really
had an experienced battle hardened spinner to draw upon. He was the variety in our attack and I
don’t think we would be as potent without a spinner of his tenacity. Carny was also brilliant in the field
and lifted our overall potency as a fielding unit.
Our batting was moderate in terms of 100’s scored, Stephen Nottle and Ben Dunk being our only
century makers, mind you good tons they were. Round 1 saw Stephen truly control the bowlers with
patience and superior skill. Noodle’s 81 in the GF also demonstrated his clinical approach to run
scoring. Ben Dunk is a new breed of player who at a young age possesses composure and grit, he
also can be belligerent against ill disciplined attacks. These qualities shone through in his first
opportunity in 2’s this season when he amassed 148n.o against Toombul. However with these two
guiding us through, Wade Townsend was clearly our rock for the first half our season, where he
consistently got us to and over the line. His rewards came later when he started doing the same for A
grade and eventually notching up his 1 st ton against Wests. He proved to be too successful in 1’s and
was ruled out of playing in our final and we wonder what might have been if Wade was with us.
To finish I would like to thank our club supporters who turn up each week and work behind the scenes
to ensure we have success on the field. Pam and Vern have made themselves integral to the
functioning of the club and there is no way our Saturday’s could be possible without them, thank you
Pam and Vern. To the webmaster Lorix Bertling I must thank for scoring and publishing our club’s
news and results for every round. Lorix gives the club a professional feel and makes players feel their
results are duly noted - great for the ego and a positive vibe around the place. Thanks also to Basil
Wright and John Michael for their assistance with scoring and general support. Thank you to our club
executive committee for their enduring support and organization.
To quote the dynamic and complicated character and former 2 nd grade captain that is Sean Slinger:
“Bowl the ball, hit the ball and catch the bloody thing.” Thank yoooooooh!

NORM MCMAHON SHIELD (THIRD GRADE)
It was a fine season for Third Grade in 2005/06. The side claimed the Minor Premiership yet lost a
close Final against a vastly experienced Valleys unit. Despite this gut wrenching loss from a position
that should never had been allowed to develop, it was obvious that a fine season had been had by
most and the group was looking forward to next season with renewed vigour.
The bowling attack performed on all surfaces with excellence. Only two sides managed to pass 250
against us all season. Angus O’Brien led the attack with 43 wickets. Angus improved rapidly. He was
considered by the Selection Committee to be the “Champion of the Lower Grades”. Angus is a fine
prospect and a wonderful young man. James Donnelly emerged in a similar vein, becoming a definite
talent for the future with both bat and ball. S. Padgett and S. Fryer were both exceptional once again.
Both really add steel to the club’s bowling ranks. The arrival of Andrew Ware was a godsend. He was
quite sharp at times and really bowled without luck for long periods. This group drove us to First Place
at the end of the Competition phase.
In the field, we did work well in games yet fell short at crucial stages throughout the season. Five
chances in the Grand Final cost us 175 runs conservatively. Valleys missed one genuine chance that
cost 25 runs. It came back to concentration and simply a lack of desire to work at these aspects of the
game that are crucial to success. A challenge exists in this field for next season.
It was apt that we lost the final with the bat. I felt like we lacked the discipline for much of the season
that was required to win in tight, pressure situations. This private assessment proved to be accurate.
No player scored 500 runs and only four centuries in a season indicates a real weakness in
application on a consistent basis. We blamed the pitch and the game situation often, but quite simply,
when put under pressure we faltered. Age was not a consideration. Young and old alike made the
same ill-disciplined errors. We were capable of more. As above, a challenge exists for next season.
Finally, I would like to thank the Crowthers, Lorix Bertling, the Keenes, my Father and the ground staff
for all their help and support during the season. It ended on a sour note yet I am proud of the steps
that were taken to continue Norths as a great club by these fine, giving individuals. It is a thankless
task and one that should garner more respect from many players who seem to develop the “we pay,
you provide attitude”.
My regards to Norths on a fine season - Second in Club Championship, Four- Semi Finals, Four
Grand Finals and one Premiership (Second Grade Women). Well done and see you all in August.

BOB SPENCE SHIELD (FOURTH GRADE)
The 2005/2006 season began with a different frame of mind to which it had ended the ‘04/05 season.
Whilst many of the faces remained, the determination and mindset had changed significantly due to
disappointment of the season prior and the hurt of narrowly missing a finals birth for three
consecutive seasons. This spurred the boys on to perform to a standard of which the club and I as
captain yearned and expected from an exceptional group of young men.
4 th grade in past seasons has been a team filled with enthusiasm, youth and talent, and ‘05/06 was
no different. With only 4 players over the age of twenty (Padge, Smithy, Donny and I) playing 4 ’s
consistently, we once again lacked the experience which is often required to win games of grade
cricket, especially when experienced teams such as Valley (1) and (2) and Souths (1) have featured
in the finals for the past 2 seasons. However this did not deter the boys’ desire to win and there is an
exception to every rule.
The season started well with a thorough victory over Sandgate, and a number of young bats amongst
the runs, James Sully (81) went on to have a successful season whilst he was with us and in 3 rd
grade before he departed our shores. From here we had a bye, went down narrowly to Souths (1)
(Crowther 5/25) who were runners up last year and grand finalists again this season, followed by a
wash-out which was likely to result in a probable victory over cellar-dwellers Toombul (due in most
part to Steven Fryer 91 and 2/9). This was not an ideal start to the season however after a characterbuilding
victory against University in which we managed to complete a full day’s batting for the
second time in the season the confidence began to grow. Another young talent who will make inroads
into senior teams next season was also discovered in the form of Fraser Smith (4/23). Rounds 6 and
7 saw narrow losses to Valley (1) (1 st ) and Wests (5 th ) but after Christmas the team finally started to
prove the potential the club knows it possesses. An outright victory over Wynnum (Don 72), a
thrashing of Redlands (Padge 4/11), a convincing and inspiring victory over Valley (2) (Padge 5/37 &
3/28) and an extremely well deserved victory over Souths (2) (Holmes 5/65, Donnelly 82*) to clinch
our long yearned for finals position.
Unfortunately the season was brought to an abrupt halt, not unlike past seasons for 4 th grade, by
torrential rain which denied the majority of us the opportunity to play our first finals cricket. Both days
versus Valley (1) were washed out.
As for the formalities: Thank you to Stephen Don whose effort as captain in my absence was greatly
appreciated by the team, he also managed to get himself among the runs and performed consistently
with the ball. Secondly to Shane Padgett whose on and off-field wisdom and antics provided me and
the boys with the confidence and determination to win and to enjoy it at the same time. We can only
hope he returns next season as he taught us much about all facets of the game and is a true club
man.
Finally with the addition of other youngsters including Andrew Brooks and Chris Boyce (who together
with myself formed the most formidable and errorless 4 th grade slip cordon since the inception of the
Brisbane Grade competition), Fraser Smith and Michael Wright the future looks bright for not only 4 th
grade, where they will develop as cricketers, but for the club as a whole. Also, our young opening
pair, Crowther and Machin, whilst having a disappointing season by their own stringent standards still
showed glimpses of brilliance and determination, which if they can couple consistently will see them
playing higher grades in years to come. Alex Clifton Jones also overcame injury (amazingly) to claim
16 wickets for the season and began to find rhythm and an eagerness for pallet which Norths will only
benefit from if it continues into 06/07.
If I can offer one piece of advice to the team, it is that we must learn from this season and develop
our games to learn that a lot can happen inside 2 days of cricket. Being such a young team, and
Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club - 12
NSDCC – 79 th Annual Report 2005-2006
eager to prove ourselves, the boys must realize that if they bat a day, bowl in partnerships and
remain patient and to resist temptation to ‘tap the pallet’ they will be recognized as the results will
follow…

ROY TANNER SHIELD (FIFTH GRADE)
The 2005/2006 season would see the 5 th Grade Team finishing 8 th on the ladder, with an overall
record of 5 wins and 5 losses (with 1 bye).
We came tantalisingly close to making the top 4 with a last game outright win, but after a 1 st innings
loss in the game; we missed out on the top 4 by 12 points. Had we won the last game outright, after a
first innings win, we would have snuck into the finals.
That said, as the semi-final round was unfortunately washed out the season would have been over
without another game played.
With the obvious disappointment that we did not make the finals, even more disappointing was the
fact that the Grand Final game was played between two sides that we defeated during the season.
Put simply, we lacked consistency throughout the season. The record shows that we were very
competitive with Ball in hand and dominated opposition batting line-ups. The highest score against us
all year was only 173 and shows that we had the opportunity to win most games and finish higher on
the ladder.
Our bowling was led by the ever-consistent Jason Keene, who had a stellar year with 29 wickets
(including two 6 wicket plus hauls). He was ably supported by new ball partner Stephen Dionysius
with 14 wickets, part-time medium pacer / part-time spinner Andrew “Roy” McIntosh (11 wickets) and
emerging talents Chris McEvoy (12 wickets), Sam Harris (15 wickets) and Tom Whittle (9 wickets).
Our ability to dominate opposition batting line-ups was supported by our fielding efforts, with Wicket
Keeper Ben Jane completing a club high 24 dismissals (21 catches and 3 stumpings). Ben is very
instinctual behind the stumps and created several wickets by keeping up to the stumps to our medium
pacers and also completed some great catches. Other notable performers in the field included Jason
Keene with 8 catches, Aaron Chapman (7 catches) and yours truly (9 catches and 1 stumping).
We also witnessed some brilliant run-outs this year, with Stephen Dionysius’ effort for a direct hit at
the non-strikers end from backward square leg, surpassed only by Jason Keene’s direct hit with only
one stump to aim at from point. (Andrew Symonds would have been proud).
Unfortunately Batting was our Achilles heel this year and as it was politely put to me on a few
occasions during the year, “we were able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory”. Too often our
batting let us down when we had very reasonable totals to chase. If only one or two of our run chases
came off we would have been “morals” to reach the top 4.
That said it was not all gloom and doom with the Bat, as we were led by Andrew “Roy” McIntosh with
300 runs [including his Maiden Norths Century and also a very unlucky 98 (when he was caught on
the boundary trying to reach triple figures off the last ball of the day)]. Chris McEvoy also chipped in
with 164 runs at an average of 54.66 (before promotion up the grades) and yours truly with 295 runs.
Fifth Grade has always been a successful stepping stone in the progression of many players and
overall I believe that we have built a solid nucleus to provide success for the future years and a trip
back into the finals should not be far away.
On field performance can only be achieved by the support provided off the field and in this regard my
thanks go to Jim Whittle, who always offered his scoring services. It provided great relief to know that
Jim was keeping everything correct and in such a professional manner.
Further thanks and appreciation to Brett Mortimer (Club Coach) and Jon Hopes (Chairman of
Selectors), who provided their support and expertise throughout the season.
Also I wish to thank the Executive for another successful year both on and off the field. The
development of the grounds and facilities has had a great impact and can only improve the on field
performance of the club. I wish to highlight the efforts of Bill Keene and Vern and Pam Crowther who
were always on hand on ‘game days’ to assist the players and the club.
Congratulations to all the other Senior Grades who made the finals and also to the 2 nd and 3 rd Grade
sides for reaching the Grand Final. Congratulations also to the Women’s Team for their Premiership
and to the Under 19 one day side for reaching the Grand Final. With a bit of effort, hard work and a
continued focus on performance, I truly believe that Norths have a chance of gaining the Club
Championship next year.
From our recently capped Internationals to the development of our juniors, we continue to be a force
in the QCA competition and a benchmark for all other clubs.

W E P HARRIS SHIELD (UNDER 18 GRADE)
I think majority of the boys would agree with me in saying, we had a very ordinary season. With the
squad we had, the team should have done a lot better than their 7 th position out of a possible 11.
At the start of the season, our squad goal was to bat out a whole days play. If we could do that, you
are going to score between 180- 220 runs, which is a very competitive score in U18’s.
As a coach I was very disappointed with the lack of commitment the batsmen put on their wickets
throughout the season. It got to the stage where I had to tell the boys to go home, find a dictionary,
and look up what the word PATIENCE and see what it means. At the end of the day, that’s all it was
that cost us the 6 games we lost. Only 1 team scored more than 250 against us, and that was Uni,
who scored 278 chasing our 267 on a road at Souths. Apart from that, no other team scored more
than 200 against us.
I was very happy with our bowling and fielding. Whatever score we got, the team made opposition
really fight to score the required runs.
Throughout the season we used 26 players. Of those 26, I feel I should make mention of a couple of
players who shone at certain stages.
• Michael Wright 101 not out V Sandgate Rd 1
103 V University Rd 4
• Dean Rawdings 55 V Sandgate Rd 1
• Ben Mainhardt 99 V Valley Rd 5
• James Penrose 59 V Wynnum-Manly Rd 8
• Daniel Ison 53 not out V Redlands Rd 9
• Mathew Smith 58 V Gold Coast Rd 10
As you can see - not enough consistency in our batting. The bowlers - Kim Brown and Cameron
Boyce both got 11 wickets each with the rest of the bowlers sharing the wickets around.
As I said earlier, if you can bat a whole day, 9 times out of 10, you will win most of your games. All the
boys have to do is study that PATIENCE word.
In closing off, I would like to think all the support staff that made my job a whole lot more enjoyable.
Glen Carey, Greg Heinemann and Jerome, who all did a great job as assistant / coaches at training
throughout the year, Also my scorers, Greg Devine, Bernadette Penrose and Basil Wright at stages
throughout the season. Once again, thank you all for your much appreciated support.
NSDCC – 79 th Annual Report 2005-2006
LORD TAVERNER’S COMPETITION (UNDER 16 GRADE)
This year Taverners squad had another good season. The reason I say that is because the games they played
they were very consistent in all of them. 1 or 2 batsmen always scored runs. They batted, fielded and bowled
well.
This year we had another large Taverners squad - 50 players to be exact. 28 players got to have a run in
Taverners at some stage. Some more than others, but that’s the way I like to work the squad. I have a core of 4
or 5 players and then give players a taste for Taverners here and there. With Taverners only having 9 rounds
this doesn’t really give enough players time to get used to playing 80 overs in a day.
This is why I always have development games during the season. This way, all the boys in the squad, get a
chance to play on turf, for a couple of games. This year we had 4-5 development games, with another 1 or 2
washed out. The games they did play were 50 over games. This still gave them time to take their time batting
and learning to be patient with bat and ball. As far as I am concerned, I believe this works ok, and more clubs
should follow our lead. Having large squads like ours we can give the boys more exposure to turf and learn how
to bat for long periods and try to keep the pressure on by bowling to set plans in the field.
As for the games played, the Taverners had a very consistent season. The team won 3 games, lost 3 by 1 or 2
runs, and had 3 washed out the second week of games, when the team was in a very good position after 1 st
days play – and as we all say “that’s cricket”.
With Taverners there was a lot more consistency within the team than U18’s. Each game, 3 or 4 players
performed well for the team, rather than 1 or 2 every game. Taverners played well as a team for the whole
season, which is why they went so well. Just to prove my point, I think I should let you all know who performed
well over the season.
• M. Wright 70 R 1
78 R 2
67 R 5
88 R 8
4-18 R 9
• C. Milne 44 R 2
33 not out R 2
• S. Pobar 63 R 1
• J. Burns 60 R 1
86 R 3
60 R 8
• D. Ison 64 R 5
4-18 R 5
• G. Sutherland Mcleod 4-12 R 2
• T. O’Malley 46 R 8
• M. Strange 49 R 8
• T. Gregory 37 R 9
• P. Garozzo 42 R 9
As you can see by those figures, Michael Wright had a pretty good season, earning him the Ernie Toovey
trophy for most outstanding Lord Taverner’s player.
As always, I normally play as many U15’s & U14’s after Xmas break for the last few games. I like to leave a
couple of senior players with them to hold them together as a unit. Very encouraging results in last 3 games,
winning 1, losing 1 by 12 runs and having 1 washed out, after scoring 6-317dec and have opposing team 2-10
at stumps after the 1 st week. The future of the club is looking very good with some of the young Vikings coming
through.
Thanks to all the people who help out throughout the season. Greg Milne & Basil Wright for scoring &
managing; assistant coach Glen Carey, Greg Heineman & Jerome for helping out at the Taverners training with
fielding drills. I can assure you the squad really appreciated all your efforts.
After a heart throbbing win over Wests last season, it was finally time to defend OUR tittle. With all six
teams (Beenleigh/Logan, Souths, University, Wests, Wynnum and Norths) returning from last season,
looking new and very improved (especially the younger teams), the 2005/2006 season looked to be a
challenging and hopefully promising season.
Apart from the addition of youngsters Sheralyn Sinclair and Zoe Giffard, there were few changes to
the ‘04/05 premiership team. Michelle Wielemaker was still as our coach and Lisa Thompson still
captain (so we thought). Lisa announced that she had decided to hand over the captaincy to
someone else, so Lisa and Michelle put their heads together and came up with three nominees
(Jeanette Nicol, Ria Zoeller and Courtney Jones) they thought could do the job. It was put to an
anonymous vote and in round five Michelle announced that the new captain was Courtney.
A great start to the season with a big win over Beenleigh in round one and Candice Bywater
becoming the first Norths lady to reach the 50 wickets milestone. After a washout or two, came more
convincing wins, Lisa Thompson also reached 50 wickets; Nardine Bainbridge had a personal best of
6/20, while Candice achieved another PB of 6/5. Surprise, surprise, another washout then our first
game against arch rivals Wests, which was a great win for us 127 d 88 thanks to some great batting
from Michelle and Ria. Round 7 against Souths proved to be the most challenging and most
rewarding game of the season. After electing to bowl first (possibly a mistake) Souths got away from
us and scored 183, however, we weren’t to be outdone reaching the target in the 33 rd over, thanks to
PB’s from Holly Nesbitt with a score of 77(not out) and Courtney’s 50. This also saw Holly reach the
500 run mark. More washouts and more wins saw Michelle also reach 500 runs, then round 12 which
saw our only loss for the season against Wests. We ended the season with 2 more great wins with
Michelle W joining Candice and Lisa in the 50 wicket club, while Lisa T also broke her three season
streak of taking 8 catches in a season with a spectacular dive to her right in the last fixture match
against Wynnum.
This spectacular season only got better when we found out we were 14 points ahead on the ladder,
and that Wests and Beenleigh were tied and it was a playoff in the last round to see who made the
finals. Beenleigh won by 4 runs. Unfortunately, it rained and we were unable to play the finals,
however, this didn’t matter with Norths being minor premiers we automatically won. So to cap off a
great season we retained our trophy and had a lot of fun along the way.
Overall the standard of Division 2 this season was great and will hopefully continue to improve. It was
great to see another team make the finals this season, hopefully Norths will continue to dominate and
make the finals next season. While next season is looking good with 2 nd grade hopefully we can do
the same with an U15 girl’s team.
It has been a great pleasure playing and being involved with Norths, especially coming from the
country. Becoming captain this season has been a great experience in the game but also within the
club. I would personally like to thank Michelle and Lisa for their support throughout the season. I
would also like to thank Bill Keene for his continued support with the girls and also thanks to Vern and
Pam for all their work and support, not only for the women but the whole club.
HAVE-A-GO (Junior Cricket Program) & CRICK-HIT
Crick-Hit and Have-A-Go were both run on Friday afternoons and was a chance for young cricketers
to hone their skills, develop new ones and enjoy the game. Although numbers of participants were
down for both programs, with half a dozen in Crick-Hit and about twenty-five increasing to near forty
by the end of the season in Have-A-Go, all the youngsters participated well and were very
enthusiastic towards all activities.
Due to the cross over of the winter/summer sports towards the end of the season we were restricted
to training on Ian Healy Oval and with lighting now installed, the children also experienced the use of
the nets and had a ball! There are about five promising young fellows that will have a hit with the U8’s
next season and will hopefully continue to play into the grade ranks with Norths.
Here is a poem to wrap up the Have-A-Go program for season ‘05/06.
The world of Have A Go, is loads of fun
A chance to bat, and bowl and run!
No one cares if they’re in or out
Fun is what it’s all about
Across the field the children shout and call
As they do their best to put bat to ball.
Courtney puts them through their paces
Rian warms them up with races
Across the field and back again
Along comes Duckling – real name Ben –
Pam and Horse have done the paper work
And take the time to sit and talk
To all the Mums and Dads around
Whilst children play upon the ground.
Special Guests we’ve had a few
Nashie, Harts, Hopesy and Joe Dawes too!
All came along to ensure a special treat -
To sign their names and “meet and greet.”
The season’s now over and done for this year
But the season ‘06 is very near
They’ll be back with friends to come and play
To have more fun another day.
So that’s STUMPS for another season.
Big thanks to Alisha Smith and Steve Rowe for their help with Crick-Hit, and also to Duck and Ben
Mainhardt, all the Bulls players that helped out, Horse and everyone who helped with Have-A-Go.
Thanks for a great season.
WILSTON NORTHS JUNIOR REPORT
Our Club fielded 26 teams this season from Under 8 to Under 16. Of these, 11 were half-season
teams as the players play with their private school post Christmas. We won the Under 16 and Under
15 half-season Championships. These teams were coached by Robert Sutherland McLeod and Tim
O’Malley respectively. We finished third in the Club Championship which was disappointing as some
teams did not get their Abstracts to the Recorder in time resulting in loss of points.
The Club celebrated 30 years of existence with a Dinner. Though the numbers could have been
better, those who attended must have had a good evening because some wanted to know when the
next celebration was going to be held. The Club thanks Ian Healy and Brendan Nash for gracing the
occasion with their presence (despite heavy schedules). The evening was ably handled by the
Master of Ceremonies, Channel Nine News Presenter Lane Calcutt.
We had 28 players from the Club selected in Brisbane Norths Championship and Development
teams. We also picked up 15 of the possible 48 batting/bowling awards this year.
Players Club Shirts are a success and an envy of many clubs. Thanks to our major sponsor
NETA/PPI and our minor sponsors Star Realty, Carpet Call, Curtains Aluminium Windows and
Prestwidge Financial Services. Also, thanks to Metro Ford who sponsored our water bottles and the
water bottle trolleys – first in Junior Cricket and a great idea!
