NEWS ON CAMPUS U.S. Senator Cites Springsteen Lyrics in Commencement Address U.S. Senator Bob Casey, Jr., addresses the 2009 graduates. nited States Senator Bob Casey, Jr., used a contemporary musician to help make his points during his Commencement address to 463 students who received either a master’s or bachelor’s degree during the May ceremony. Referring several times to lyrics from the Bruce Springsteen song “Kingdom of Days,” Senator Casey urged the graduates to build their own kingdom of memories and values that will sustain each of them through whatever may come. “I hope for each of the graduates and your families, but especially each of the graduates, my hope is that you will take the time to not only have a successful career, full of achievement, full of success, but also to take the time to build a family and personal relationships based on trust, mutual respect and unconditional love,” Casey urged. Casey also urged the graduates to not be discouraged by the current economic climate or international instability by quoting Thomas Jefferson, saying, “I like the dream of the future more than the history of the past.” Celebrating their Commencement are, first row, left to right, Matt Feci, Loriah Webby, Alison Sweeney and Gina Rozaieski, who earned her bachelor’s degree from King’s in 2008 and a master’s degree in 2009. Dustin Stark, who received a degree in criminal justice with a second major in sociology, gets creative with his mortar board. Noelle Lyon-Kovaleski, who received a master of science degree in health care administration, celebrates with her husband, Chuck, and her son, Casey. A Scranton native and son of former Pennsylvania Governor, the late Robert Casey, Bob Casey, Jr., served eight years as the state Auditor General and two years as State Treasurer before winning election to the U.S. Senate in 2006. The citation read before Casey was awarded an honorary doctorate noted his many accomplishments, including his drive for children’s health care in the United States, debt relief in the Third World and his lifelong commitment to Catholic moral teachings throughout his professional life. “From the time that Senator Casey taught fifth grade in a Philadelphia inner city school after graduating from college, he has been a great advocate of improving the quality of education,” Father O’Hara said in announcing Casey’s selection as Commencement speaker. “He is keenly aware of the issues important to the people he represents and provides great support to Northeast Pennsylvania on a federal level akin to the support that his father obtained at the state level. The Caseys are a shining example of a family of faith who dedicated their lives to public service. Throughout his career, Bob Casey has been guided by the legacy of his father’s principle that ‘all public service is a trust, given in faith and accepted in honor.’ ” Also receiving honorary doctorates during Commencement were local physician and philanthropist Dr. Susan Sordoni and Father James Burasa, C.S.C., Superior of the District of East Africa of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the first African native to hold that position.
