History
Havasu is the Mohave Indian word for blue
water, Ha (meaning water) vasu (meaning
blue). In the early 1800's beaver and bear trappers
set up camps along the river where Lake
Havasu City stands today. By 1830 these trappers
had been chased away by the Mojave
Indians. The Indians were unhappy with the
way the trappers would kill animals, skin them
and leave their carcasses. Later, Spaniards replaced
these camps with mining camps. With
the great need for water, the Parker Dam was
constructed in 1938, flooding these camps
forever. Fishing camps were the next to follow.
During World War II the Army Air Corps used
this area as a testing site known as Site Six.
The camp areas were used as barracks and
the nearby peninsula as a recreation area for
the airmen. By the early 1960s the airmen
were gone and the fishermen were back. Industrialist
Robert McCulloch Sr., while flying
over the area, thought it would be the perfect
place for testing his companies outboard
boat motors.
McCulloch purchased 3500 acres in the peninsula
area. He had a 100-unit mobile home
park built for the workers. In 1963 he bought
Sculpture of the City Founders,
Robert McCulloch Founder
and C.V. Wood, Master Planner
a 26-mile area for under $75 an acre. Mc-
Culloch then turned his interests to making
Lake Havasu a retirement community. The
Lake Havasu Hotel was built, McCulloch
International Airlines was started, real estate
agents were put in place and 40 white
Jeeps were purchased, all in anticipation
of prospective buyers. The 11 airplanes
that comprised McCulloch International
Airlines were used to bring prospective
buyers in for free. The Jeeps were used by
real estate agents to show them around
the area. McCulloch then decided to start
a chainsaw manufacturing plant to stimulate
the economy. There were 3 factories
with 400 employees.
In the early 1960s, it was discovered that
130-year-old London Bridge was slowly
sinking into the Thames River. Not wanting
to demolish the bridge, London decided
to hold an auction for the bridge. Always
the great promoter, McCulloch thought
it would be the perfect attraction for his
growing city. His bid of $2,460,000 was the
winning bid. It took 3 years to transport it
across the ocean and through the Panama
Canal to its present location. At a cost of
about $8 million, it was reconstructed
brick by brick and open for business on
October 10, 1971
Lake Havasu City was established as a
planned community, meant to be selfsupporting.
The economy was based on a
ratio of 40% light industrial, 40% resort and
recreation and 20% commercial services. By
1975 the population had reached 15,500.
The free flights were discontinued in 1978.
It was estimated that at least 137,000 prospective
buyers had made this flight.
London Bridge History
The stone London Bridge was begun around the year 1176, and completed
in the early years of the 13th century. The first ‘London Bridge’ was
Roman, and probably built of timber. However, the earliest written
reference to a London Bridge can be found in the section in the Saxon
Chronicles that deals with the later tenth century.
London Bridge in about 1900 with very busy traffic
Photo: www.wikipedia.org
The wooden Roman and Saxon London Bridges were vulnerable
to fire and flood, so Peter de Colechurch determined to build a
lasting bridge of stone. During the 30 years that it took to build,
the bridge cost the lives of an estimated 150 workmen.
As historical drawings show, its silhouette changed constantly
- with buildings frequently being demolished and replaced.
Throughout its history, the bridge has been a busy
thoroughfare, and was once lined with shops.
In 1666, the houses on London Bridge were saved from the
Great Fire of London, thanks to an earlier fire in 1633 - which
had destroyed the houses near to the north bank, so there
was nothing for the fire to get hold of. In the mid 1700s, the
houses on the bridge were removed completely, and a larger
middle arch was created, by removing one of the piers (or
starlings).
In the 1820s a new London Bridge was built, north of the old one,
and this opened in 1831. In that same year, the destruction of the old
bridge began in earnest, after it had been in place some 622 years.
In the 1960s, the London Bridge of 1831 was transported, stone by
stone, to Lake Havasu, Arizona.
Water Sports
Parker Dam created a water wonderland in an area where large natural
bodies of water do not exist. The International Jet sport Boat Association
World Finals are held here, earning Lake Havasu the nickname – “Personal Watercraft
Capital of the World”. Over 400 miles of shoreline provide beautiful beaches,
swimming areas and campgrounds.
Any type of water recreation can be found here including aqua cycles, bumper boats,
jet skis, ski boats, pontoons, fishing boats, houseboats, sail boats, kayaks, canoes and
parasailing. If you don’t have your own equipment these can all be rented from local
area businesses.
Tour boats are a big draw on Lake Havasu. The Dixie Belle
is a Mississippi type paddle wheel boat that gives narrated
tours. The Kon Tiki Tour boats give guided tours of Toprock
Canyon. Blue Water Jet Boat Tours and London Jets have
tours of Toprock Gorge and gambling trips to Laughlin. Water
Along the 450 miles of shoreline at Lake Havasu, you will find sandy
beaches, perfect weather and campsites. Lake Havasu in the
desert southwest is a great place for water sports and camping.
Summer temperatures are regularly in the 100’s and during late
February and early March you can expect daytime highs in the low
80’s and nighttime lows in the 40’s. The area averages 4 inches of
rain a year and the months of March and April tend to be very dry.
The sunsets are breathtaking and the sunrises spectacular. The
clear night skies are perfect for stargazing.
Fishing
Lake Havasu boasts the best year-round fresh water fishing in Arizona
and California. One can find bass, crappies, bluegills, carp and
catfish in the many coves and inlets of the deep water. Take-off
Point, Mesquite Cove, Havasu Springs and Site Six are all fishing access
areas.
The Lake Havasu Fish Hatchery and The Havasu Fisheries Project
are very important for future generations of fisherman. They are
instrumental in bringing back several species of fish that disappeared
with the construction of Parker Dam. Seven isolated coves
have been set aside to raise the populations of bonytail chub and
razorback suckers. After they reach twelve inches in length they are
released into the lake.
So get out on the banks or make your way out onto the lake in a boat.
Everything from fly-fishing to trolling can be enjoyed here.
Arizona mountain man, Bill Williams. The Bill Williams River was historically
unique to this section of the Lower Colorado River as a major
tributary that was used as a travel corridor by Native American, European
explorers, and early settlers.
Wilderness: The Swansea and the Rawhide Mountain Wilderness
areas straddle the Bill Williams River between Planet Ranch
and Alamo Dam. The Rawhide Mountain Wilderness contains
rugged uplands and the scenic Banded Canyon of the Bill Williams
River. The Swansea Wilderness includes Black Mesa, a volcanic
upland a more open river canyon, and two vehicle access
corridors to the river.
together and were discussing how Lake Havasu
should be lit for the safety of boaters. On February
15, 2000 the Lake Havasu Lighthouse Club was
formed. They decided to build 1/3 size replicas of
famous lighthouses. After receiving approvals of
all the necessary government agencies, the West
Quoddy Lighthouse was dedicated on June 15,
2002 as a navigational light at the west end of the
Bridgewater Channel. Since then 20 in all have been
erected with additional lighthouses in the future.
In addition to serving as a safety function, these
lighthouses have proven to be a popular destination
for tourists and families. The Lighthouse Club is
presently working on plans to open a Lighthouse
Museum. Visit: www.lh-lighthouseclub.org
Laughlin Nevada
In the heart of the Desert
only 90 miles southeast
of Las Vegas, just a few
hours from Southern California
and a short drive
from Lake Havasu City.
Laughlin’s current location
was established in
the 1940’s. The settlement
consisted of a motel and bar that catered to gold and silver miners
who dotted the map, and to the many construction workers who
built Davis Dam.
Today there are eleven hotel/casinos in Laughlin providing over
10,000 rooms, 125,000 square feet of meeting space, 60 restaurants,
two museums, a 34-lane bowling center and a variety of
boutiques, spas and salons. More than 14,000 casino workers
cross the Colorado by shuttle boat or the Laughlin Bridge daily
from Bullhead City and Fort Mohave.
The city by the Colorado river now attracts nearly 5 million visitors
annually who visit Laughlin to gamble, enjoy water sports on
the Colorado and attend many high-profile special events hosted
by the community.
This resort destination boasts a multitude of unspoiled attractions,
abundant golf and spas, year ‘round, near-perfect weather,
and even a wedding chapel or two.
Oatman
Perched on the craggy
rocks of the Black Mountains
at an elevation
of 3,000 ft. is the living
ghost town of Oatman.
This former gold mining
town, 26 miles from Kingman,
on Historic Route 66
is as untamed and original
as it was in its heyday
in mid to late 1800’s. Oatman was once the last stop on
Route 66 before entering the dreaded Mojave Desert.
The town and its 300 or so residents include artists, writers and
musicians along with a colony of wild burros (descendants of
old miner’s burros) who roam the streets during the day, seeking
handouts, then disappearing into their desert home at night.
Oatman’s rough-hewn Main Street (Route 66) has been featured
in several movies.
Its three saloons, with
their unpainted wooden
floors and outside walkways
are as they were in
the late 1800’s.
Remnants of mining shafts
and tailings are scattered
among the craggy rocks.
for sale in shops lining Main Street. Actors stage gunfights during
weekends for tourists. Oatman celebrates Gold Camp Days
The Mojave Desert
The transition from the hot Sonoran Desert to the cooler and
higher Great Basin is called the Mojave Desert. This arid region
of Southeastern California and portions of Nevada, Arizona
and Utah, occupies more than 25,000 sq. miles.
The Mojave consists of mountain-and-basin topography (typical
of Kingman terrain). Sand and gravel basins drain to central
salt flats from which borax, potash and salt are extracted. Silver,
tungsten, gold, and iron are mined in the Mojave.
This desert’s climate is characterized by extreme variation in daily
temperature and an annual precipitation of less than 5 inches
(average). Almost all of the moisture arrives in winter. Freezing
can occur in winter, while summers are hot, dry and windy.
Although desert climates can be harsh, they are softened by
the beauty of spring vegetation. Wildflowers, various flowering
cacti and the unusual Joshua Tree blossoms make the desert
come alive at this time of year. A spring hike through the desert
will arouse all your senses.
Buckskin Mountains, Desert Bar
The “Nellie E Saloon” (Desert Bar) is situated in the Buckskin
Mountains, in Parker, Arizona. People come from all over to visit
this most unusual attraction located in the middle of nowhere.
Stock vehicles will find this trail quite challenging. Several rocky
sections require careful tire placement and the help of a good
spotter.
The name “Nellie E” originates
from the old mining
claim. They used
to mine copper and
then take it to the smelter
and get gold. This
unique solar powered
saloon has windows that
are old glass refrigerator
doors, the bar is
brass, and the ceiling is
made of stamped tin.
Across from the saloon
is an outside bar, cooking
area and stage for
live music.
A covered foot bridge leads to the Church. The church is made
of solid steel and the walls and ceiling are made of the same
stamped tin used inside the bar and the roof is made of copper.
The church is a unique place for weddings and a great
photo spot. There are no services held in the church and all
religions are welcome.
The “Nellie E Saloon” is located 5 miles off the Cienega Springs Rd exit
on Hwy-95, approximately 5 miles north of Parker, Arizona.
Open Saturdays and Sundays only from high noon until sunset,
Labor Day weekend through Memorial Day weekend.
Hi Jolly Monument
Quartzsite’s most famous citizen
was Hadji Ali (known as Hi
Jolly). He died in 1902 but he is
still a legend today. The US Army
signed him on as a camel driver
in 1856. Survey crews were mapping
a wagon route in northern
Arizona and the U.S. Secretary
of War, Jefferson Davis felt camels
would be of great help in this
desert area. So 60 camels and
several drivers were brought
from the Middle East.
When the camel experiment
ended, Hi Jolly decided to stay
and prospect for gold. He kept several camels. He turned his last
camel loose near Gila Bend in 1868. He married and had children
but later deserted them and came back to Quartzsite to prospect
for gold in his final years. He went out into the desert to find a wild
camel and died on Dec. 16, 1902. Legend has it that his body was
found with a dead camel.
The Arizona Department of Transportation erected a monument
in 1935 at the site of his last camp.
Here he was buried with the ashes of the last known camel. A multicolored
stone monument topped by a camel make his burial site
easy to find
Quartzsite
Quartzsite was established in 1867 on
the site of Old Fort Tyson. 20 miles east
of the Colorado River on I-10, it has been
a rock- hound’s paradise since the 1960s.
Today well over one million people visit
each year, mostly in RVs during January
and February. About 2,000 vendors of
rocks, gems, minerals, fossils, etc. form
one of the world’s largest flea markets.
The Kofa Mountains are south off U.S. 95. Historic and scenic areas
include Crystal Hill, Tyson Tanks, Tyson Wells Museum and the
Hi Jolly Monument. South in the Kofa Mountains is Palm Canyon,
home of Arizona’s only native palms, reached by a very steep climb.
Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park
1 Prison Hill Road • Yuma, Arizona 85364
On July 1, 1876, the first seven inmates entered the Territorial
Prison at Yuma, and were locked into the new cells they had
built themselves.
A total of 3,069 prisoners, including 29 women, lived within these
walls during the prison’s thirty-three years of operation. Their
crimes ranged from murder to polygamy, with grand larceny being
the most common. A majority served only portions of their
sentences due to the ease with which paroles and pardons were
obtained. One hundred eleven persons died while serving their
sentences, most from tuberculosis, which was common throughout
the territory. Of the many prisoners who attempted escape,
twenty-six were successful, but only two were from within the
prison confines. No executions took place at the prison because
capital punishment was administered by the county government.
By 1907, the prison was severely overcrowded, and there was
no room on Prison Hill for expansion. The convicts constructed
a new facility in Florence, Arizona. The last prisoner left Yuma on
September 15, 1909.
Facilities: Historic site, water tank, guard tower, sally port (entrance
gate) museum (display of artifacts and interpretation of
prison, former staff and former convicts, cell blocks, caliche hill
(south bank) new yard and cells. Amenities: Picnic area, rest rooms,
water, and vending machines.
Parker Dam is located on the Colorado River, approximately 16 miles
northeast of Parker, Arizona and 155 miles downstream from Hoover
Historic Route 66
From Chicago to L.A., more than two thousand miles all the way
was the boasting lyrics of the famous song "Get Your Kicks on
Route 66." Kingman is at the heart of the longest stretch of this
famed highway still in existence and intact.
The foundation for both the community of Kingman and the 'highway'
was laid hundreds of years ago.
Native Americans who lived in the surrounding deserts and mountains,
originally forged the path that was to become Route 66 as a
trade route to the Pacific.
In the mid 1800's, the path became a trail (under the guidance of
a military surveyor) that would eventually carry a nation westward.
The 'National Old Trails Highway' was the result and with continued
improvement, it was renamed 'Route 66' in 1926. With the
unprecedented prosperity of the postwar years, Route 66 became
one long neon avenue from Chicago to L.A. Through the years,
the highway has had many names 'The Main Street of America,'
'The Wire Road,' 'The Will Rogers Highway,' and the 'Mother Road'
to name a few. Songs and television shows immortalized it and
Kingman was at the heart of it all. By the 1950's, with the increase
in traffic came the 'National Interstate Highway System.' One of
the new interstates was to be I-40, which would parallel Route 66
in many places cover it in others. So
ended a way of life for many of the
communities along Route 66.
In 1987, the Historic Route 66 Association
of Arizona was formed prompting
interest in the historic highway,
thus increasing tourism along the Arizona
portion of the old route in communities
such as Williams, Seligman,
Hackberry, Valle Vista, Topock/Golden
Shores and Oatman.
