acquiring and developing successful real
estate projects throughout the United States,
and his accomplishments are testimony to
his adeptness at acquiring skills in one field
and applying them to another. Mr. Georgusis
has successfully overseen the development
of millions of square feet of retail space
and the acquisition and/or development
of more than 10,000 acres of land.
Through his involvement with the Archdiocese
of New Orleans, he provided an adequate
site for two buildings to house elderly
residents and a Catholic high school when
past attempts to build the homes for the
elderly were thwarted in zoning disputes.
He has given his time and resources to
numerous charities and institutions without
regard to religious or national boundaries,
including Delgado Community College,
Nunez Community College, The Magnolia
School, Archbishops’ Community Appeal,
Communities in Schools, Metropolitan Crime
Commission, March of Dimes, American
Cancer Society, Teen Challenge, City of
Hope, Straight Street, St. Michael’s Special
School, Los Islenos, the 700 Club, Louisiana
Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and
numerous golf and fishing tournaments.
An outstanding advocate for Delgado
and the Louisiana Community Technical
College System, Mr. Georgusis has helped
people advance themselves academically
and obtain housing or medical treatment
when they otherwise could not have done
so. He has helped people regain their
footing during adverse times, not only with
financial aid but also with emotional support.
For his entrepreneurial spirit coupled
with his altruistic nature, Mr. Georgusis
was honored with this special degree,
which he accepted in memory of his son,
Joseph Hercules (“Joey”) Georgusis Jr.
This special moment was followed by
another, when Award Committee Chair
Brenda Bryant, Ph.D., presented this year’s
Seymour Weiss Endowed Professorship
for Excellence in Teaching Award –
Delgado’s highest honor for faculty – to
Lynn Robertson, associate professor of
Television Production. Visibly moved yet
forever gracious, Ms. Robertson remarked
that she could “never have done this without
the help and support of my colleagues.”
Sheila Hickman, professor and program
director for MTLS, then introduced the
keynote speaker for the day, Interim
Chancellor Deborah R. Lea.
Interim Chancellor Lea’s address was
pure inspiration, and certainly heartfelt,
encouraging the day’s graduates to always
hold their heads high and be filled with pride
as alumni of the college. Delgado graduates,
she reminded
everyone, are not
just exceptional
academically, but
personally, as noble
individuals and
important contributors
to the community.
Among examples
from the graduating
class, Ms. Lea
highlighted a few of
extraordinary stories:
a Blackhawk pilot
who rescued people
during Katrina and
left one week after
graduation for his
second tour of duty
in Iraq; a woman who
lost everything in
Katrina and inspired
her classmates
so much that they
helped her personally
and financially
balance school,
work and children;
and a Horticulture
student so moved
by her service
learning project
with Habitat for
Humanity that she is
now pursuing a career in community nonprofit
work. Interim Chancellor Lea’s point
resounded: all of Delgado’s graduates
have earned the right to be proud.
After a beautiful performance of “River
in Judea” by the Delgado Choir and
Ceremonial Band, Delgado Faculty Senate
President Robert Lawyer presented the
faculty, then was joined by LTC Region 1
Provost and Dean of Technical Education
Kim Rugon to present the graduates.
With the words from her address resonating,
Interim Chancellor Lea conferred the
appropriate degrees, certificates and
diplomas upon the graduates to the rousing
applause of family, friends, faculty and staff.
Tammy Marie LeBlanc received top honors,
graduating from Delgado Community College
with a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point
average (Associate of Science, Accounting).
Charity School of Nursing Pinning Ceremony
honorees were also recognized. The Charity
School of Nursing Honor Pin, the highest
award presented by the nursing faculty, was
presented to Stephanie Sylvie Sauvinet. This
honor goes annually to a graduating student
who meets the criteria of character, nursing
ability, scholarship, leadership, participation
in school activities, positive influence on the
student body, and loyalty to the school.
Louisiana Center for Women
and Government’s 2008
Hall of Fame Awards
The Louisiana Center for Women and Government was
established in 1990 to encourage and promote the future
leadership of women by providing resources and non-partisan
support through educational workshops, training seminars, and
outreach programs. Kathleen Mix is chair of the New Orleans
At the Louisiana Center for Women and Government’s 2008 Hall of Fame
Awards Ceremony held on March 14, 2008, Ray Newton, Laura Ditta, Fay
Newton, Kathleen Mix and Traci Smothers had the opportunity to meet
Connie Chung (center).
Diane B. Bryant had the highest nursing
program grade point average. Laurie Maloney
Casey Graves Malbrough, Stephanie Sylvie
Sauvinet and Marie Anne Westlake. Denise
Codd also received the New Orleans District
Nurses Association Leadership Award.
Once all the appropriate degrees and
certificates were conferred by Interim
Chancellor Lea, the graduates were
officially inducted into the Delgado Alumni
Association by its president, Colleen Ulfers.
The day ended as it had begun, with
music, as Mr. Edwards led the benediction
by inviting all to join in singing “Amazing
Grace,” and the Delgado Ceremonial Band
accompanied the exit of the proud graduates
with the Ceremonial Recessional March.
Congratulation to the spring 2008 graduates!

Delgado and Tulane Sign 2+2 Agreement
Delgado Interim Chancellor Deborah
Lea and Richard Marksbury, dean of the
School of Continuing Studies at Tulane
University, were joined by institution
leaders in Delgado’s City Park Student
Life Center to sign a “2+2” articulation
agreement between the two schools.
Under the agreement, students at
Delgado who successfully complete the
associate degree programs in Computer
Information Technology, Criminal
Justice, Fine Arts, General Science
and Performance and Media Arts will
receive 60 credits toward a bachelor’s
degree program offered through and
by the School of Continuing Studies at
Tulane University. These students must
then successfully complete an additional
60 credits at the School of Continuing
Studies to earn a 4-year degree in a
program of their choice.
Delgado signed a “2+2” agreement
with UNO’s Business Administration
program in 2007 and is currently working
on other similar agreements. These
types of agreements are an important
manifestation of the growing cooperation
among Louisiana’s higher education
institutions and will enhance the ability of
college students to make steady, timely
and financially efficient progress toward a
bachelor’s degree.
“It offers the students at Delgado an
opportunity to advance their educational
careers,” said Lea. “Plus, many of Delgado’s
non-traditional students who attend schools
in the evenings and weekends will still benefit
from the flexible schedule at the School of
Continuing Studies.”
While Delgado and the School of Continuing
Studies have enjoyed a strong, 25-year
relationship, and credits were often
transferred on a course-by-course basis,
the new “2+2” articulation agreement
formalizes the smooth transfer of Delgado
associate degree completers’ full 60
credits toward a baccalaureate degree
program offered by the Tulane University
School of Continuing Studies.
“We get the people that graduate and
finish Delgado’s program,” Marksbury
said. “By definition, they’re good
students.”
Delgado, LLSI and NOPD
“Leave a Legacy of Love” for Abused Children
As part of Delgado Community
College’s ongoing dedication
to service learning initiatives
in the Greater New Orleans
area, the college’s ADOT 261
(Legal Office Procedures)
class participated in a service
learning project to model the
“Leave a Legacy of Love”
initiative adopted by Louisiana
Legal Secretaries Inc. (LLSI).
The program is part of
a national philanthropic
effort through LSSI (Legal
Secretaries International Inc.).
The Delgado project,
undertaken during the
Spring semester, focused
the students on soliciting
donations of stuffed animals
to share with regional law
enforcements agencies whose
officers use the animals to
comfort children that are
victims of domestic abuse or
present at accident sites.
A portion of the animals collected by
Delgado will be distributed to a state
agency through LLSI, while an additional
portion – more than 100 stuffed animals –
was presented by Delgado’s Legal Office
Procedures class to Sgt. Arnold Williams,
Allison Brown, Delgado ADOT-261 student (L), and Terri Gonzales-
project to Sgt. Arnold Williams, Assistant Commander of the Child Abuse Unit
of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), for law enforcement officers
to use in comforting children who are the victims of domestic abuse or accident
site witnesses.
Assistant Commander of the Child Abuse Unit
of the New Orleans Police Department.
“The positive response to this service
learning project was overwhelming, from
both students and our community donors,”
said Terri Gonzales-Kreisman, coordinator
of Delgado’s Legal Secretary Certificate
Program. “We are proud to assist the NOPD
and our other Louisiana law
enforcements agencies in
providing such an important,
and heartfelt, assistance to
children in need.”
Service learning is a teaching
method that connects
community service to
classroom learning. Students
use what they learn in the
classroom and apply that
knowledge to real-world
experiences.
This “learning by doing”
strategy helps students
develop practical skills,
build self esteem and a
sense of civic responsibility.
Community partners involved
in student learning play a
key role in educating the
citizens of the area by offering
meaningful opportunities for
personal and professional
growth. In return, the
students provide valuable resources to
the community, contributing specialized
knowledge and skills to a community
project.
initiated a college-wide Service Learning
initiative beginning in 2007.
