December 2012
From the President’s Office
Rev. Dr. Brian S. Saunders
President's Piece for Peace
On December 2nd we will step into the Sunday that initiates the festival half of the church year. Thanksgiving
services will have been conducted and you would like to catch your breath. As soon as you inhale you realize
Advent is upon us with multiple worship services per week. For over a month you will be picking out twice the
number of hymns and preparing twice the amount of sermon material. Add in the Lutheran School concerts,
public school programs, Christmas Pageant practice and finally Christmas Eve and Christmas Day means you
will not be wondering what to do with your time.
Those of you who have experienced this season many times will also attest to the fact that the membership of
the congregation multiplies their needs in many different ways during this season. Some fall into great
depression for the loss of a loved one no longer with them to celebrate as before. Others are scurrying in such a
fashion as to take advantage of all the secular invasions that have crept into the Advent/Christmas season.
Parties, gatherings, shopping and more add to the hectic days ahead. Pastoral care for the sheep as well as
classroom oversight by the teacher can go beyond exhaustion this time of the year.
I guess I could call on my "old man" years of experience and tell you that I endured it and so will you. While
that may be true it is about as helpful as the coach telling a player not to rub his arm after getting hit by a pitch.
I would do better pointing you to the Psalm that carried so much comfort and strength to Martin Luther. I speak
of Psalm 46:10-11. My translation "Let be! and know that I am Elohim, I will be exalted among the
nations, I will be exalted in the earth. Yahweh of hosts is with us, a high tower for us is the Elohim of
Jacob." Luther loved that Psalm because it speaks of God as almighty over all things as well as God who is
personal and intimate with us in every facet of our life and vocation.
"Let be!" As the schedule scurrys and it will, "let be!" Let it happen as it will but it need not take you along with
it. "Let be" by devoting time in the Psalms each day during Advent. Receive the comfort that God is for you
here and now. "Let be" by preaching the Word and conducting the liturgy for the sake of those who come to
church for the sake of escaping the chaos of the secular world. "Let be" by teaching in the classroom the simple
truth that God became flesh for the sake of gathering our sins on Himself and making full atonement for them.
Offer them what only the Church can give, "The Peace of Christ which passes all understanding." "Let be"
begins with you and flows to your members and students.
God bless you in this upcoming season. May He grant you strength, wisdom, patience, and joy from His Word
and blessed Sacraments. You are all in my prayers.
In His peace
Rev. Dr. Brian S. Saunders, President IDE
