Alan Goldman
Alan has run Leeside Consultants, a maritime consulting business, since 2000. Prior to this he
was CEO of Lloyd's Maritime Information Services Ltd. and Managing Director of MaritimeData
Ltd. Both were maritime information and consulting businesses. He has also worked in a
shipping line operating container and Ro-Ro services, where he was a Director.
He has over 20 years consulting experience and has worked on a wide variety of projects, the
majority of which have involved analysing markets and providing business advice. His container
industry experience covers all aspects of ship and landside operations, and commercial
management. As a consultant he has worked on projects that have covered operational,
regulatory and commercial matters in all sectors of the industry and on forecasting traffic flows
for both port developments and risk analysis.
He has successfully identified, conceptualised and developed new business opportunities, as
well as new products and services, both as a business manager and as a consultant.

Leeside Consultants provide advice to government and commercial clients on a wide variety of
maritime issues, including the development of new technologies and equipment for use onboard
ship, maritime policy, regulatory issues, freight markets, bunker markets, port and infrastructure
developments and business strategies.

Review of landside logistics and transport infrastructure in Northern Europe and East Africa.
Establishing the constraints and risks of operating ships carrying crude oil and LNG from the
Russian Arctic in ice conditions.

Managing Director
Founded and raised finance for the development of an Internet based information business. The
business, which compiled and integrated data from a range of information providers, was one of
the first to do so using advanced analytical tools on the Web. The product development was
completed on time and to budget. It was subsequently sold to Strategic Software in July 1999.

Performed a number of projects as an Independent Management Consultant for clients in the U.S.,
U.K. and Scandinavia, including:
Provided strategic advice and a business review for a division of Telenor developing
e-commerce and Intranet services for the maritime sector.
A competitive analysis for a leading Flag State.
Adviser on a strategic shipping project for NATO.
Lloyd’s Maritime Information Services Ltd. 1986 to June 1997
Chief Executive
Established and developed the business activities of Lloyd's Maritime Information Services Ltd.
(LMIS). LMIS provided electronic information and transportation consultancy services. The
company was a joint venture (up to March 1997) between LLP Ltd. (now Informa PLC) and Lloyd's
Register of Shipping. Had full P&L responsibility from the company’s inception.
Grew revenue and profitability from start up to achieve a profit of £1.7m on a turnover of
£5.6m (£6.3m for the group) in 1996.
Successfully managed the relationship between the shareholders.
Maintained a stable core team of trained staff.
Profitably expanded the range of products and services (within strict operating constraints set
by the shareholders).
Developed a successful consultancy practice concentrating on the strategic analysis of trade
and shipping activities.
Conceived and designed the systems functionality for many of the company’s products.
Adviser to a number of maritime industry groups in Europe and the U.S.
Ellerman Lines 1977 to 1986
Director - Ellerman Harrison Container Line
Responsible for shipside and landside operations and commercial policy in a joint venture
company operating a container and Ro-Ro service from Europe to Southern Africa.
Managed operations of intermodal container shipping line within the strict guidelines of a
financial pool. Turnover £25m. Direct staff 10 (plus operational staff in agents worldwide).
Negotiated charterparties.
Managed the company’s U.K. sales for a period of nine months as an additional
responsibility. During this period market share increased.

Joined P&O Containers as a graduate and worked in the International Container Management
