A Note from the Activities Director

Well, we are heading into the fall car show season and I
can't believe how busy all of the members have been with
the many events locally and regionally. There are a lot of
car show events on our calendar, but I want to mention two
very specific show events that are club sponsored and will
provide a very special and unique opportunity for club
members and their cars.
Wells Fargo Advisors - Classic Car Show
The first is event is just around the corner on September 24th
from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm (see page 7) . It is the 3rd Annual
Classic Car Show sponsored by the Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC
and is a major charity event for Circle of Concern. Last year
this event raised over $3,000.00 in donations and collected
2,000 pounds of food and toiletries. The show is taking
place at St. Louis Motorsports in Chesterfield Valley. This is a
premier location for a show of this nature and participants
will also be treated to a catered buffet of hors
d'oeuvres . This year we have been given our own space
on the show field. We would like to see 20 plus cars show
up. Many members of our club have unique and rare cars
that would be appreciated at this show. It is a very popular
show and is well attended by the public and of course Wells
Fargo clients and workers. Come out with your car to show
your support and share a classic. Please contact me Tom

attending so we can be sure we reserve a large enough for
our cars.
SSR CCCA Car Show
The next event is a new venture. This year the Spirit club is
sponsoring its own car show. This will be a show for just club
members and their cars. It will not involve judging or awards
in any form. Many of us give a lot of time to the car hobby
in the area and when we do take our cars to local shows or
regional shows we often spend a large amount of time
assisting with the event. As a result, we have little time
where we can just sit by our cars and visit with fellow
hobbyists. The Spirit Car Show will be an opportunity for you
to bring your unique car out to be enjoyed by fellow club
members. This year’s show will be hosted by the Kemp
Museum in Chesterfield Valley, on October 23rd. The cars
will be set up on the Kemp Plaza and will be available for
public viewing. Participants will have access to the Kemp
Museum. Mark the date on your calendar. You will be
contacted by members of the committee to extend a
personal invitation to this event. This is the first of what we
hope will become an annual event for our club and the
Kemp Museum is looking forward to a long and continuous
relationship with our club. See page 12 for a registration
form.

Director’s Column
It is hard to believe that this is the beginning of the fall
season for our Region and its activities. This year has gone by
quickly. It won’t be long and we will have our November 9,
2011 Annual Meeting at the Kemp Museum in Chesterfield
Valley. We have a few surprises for you, so you won’t want to
miss this event.
Our July & August Spirit Nights were well attended as
usual. We will have just two more Spirit Nights in 2011,
September 13th. at Grappa Grille and October 11th at Al
Smith’s Feasting Fox, with guest speaker Mark Goldfeder.
Please note that both of these Spirit Nights are the 2nd
Tuesday instead of the usual night.
We have a very important Fund Raiser (Car Display) on Saturday October 1st. We
need at least 10 cars for this Fund Raiser so please help us out and sign up to bring a
car. See the flyer in this issue. (see page 6)
We also will be participating in the Wells Fargo Car Show on Saturday September
24, 2011 in Chesterfield. A flyer is also included in this issue of the Spark Plug. Both of
these events count toward your participation award.
As part of our effort to increase our income and trying to keep the cost down on
our annual meeting we will be having a silent auction at the event. We are looking for
items that you might like to donate to the silent auction. You should have received a
letter from our chairperson, Dr. Esther Lauer. If you have anything to donate please
contact Esther at (636)940-2226.

Classic® Pinup
This yellow 1937 beauty above is owned by SSRCCCA members John & Rose Gibson. John
writes:
“The 1937 Packard 115-C was the company’s first six-cylinder car since 1927. The 115-C was positioned as a
low-priced vehicle that could serve as a companion to the company’s very successful One Twenty. The sixcylinder
engine in the 115-C was basically from the One Twenty but with two fewer cylinders. It was an L-
head straight six that displaced 237 cubic inches and produced 100 horsepower. It has a three-speed
selective synchromesh gearbox with a single disc clutch. Hydraulic drum brakes are at all four corners. The
wheelbase measured 115-inches and was offered in several styles including coupe (Business, Convertible,
and Sport Coupe), Sedan (Club Sedan, 5-passenger sedan, and touring sedan), and a station wagon.
Pricing ranged from around $800-$1300. This particular vehicle was sold by McDonna Motor Company in
Peoria, Illinois in 1937. This is reflected on the data tag. Delivery date was June 6 th .
The vehicle was owned by Dale Kuykendall in 1972 when Gene Schaab bought it from him for $700.00. Dale
had the Givens machine shop in Princeville, Illinois rebuild the engine. Dale also restored the chassis. After
Gene Schaab bought it he kept it for 18 years and did not do anything to it except move it from one
location in Normal, Illinois to Towanda, Illinois where it was purchased by Norm Hiser in 1990 for $9500.00.
After Norm purchased a 1937 donor coupe (apart) from Gene’s brother Oren, he began the twenty year
restoration. Running boards and other related parts from the donor vehicle, plus all miscellaneous parts we
kept by Norm except the frame, engine and main coupe body part. The coupe was
then sold to an individual whom made it into a somewhat poor quality street rod with a v
-8 engine.
Norm sold the uncompleted restoration to John Gibson in 2010 and it was on the road
again by the end of the 2010.”

The CCCA Spirit Region will have a Classic Car Display at this year’s Street Fest in downtown St. Louis
on Locust Street.
This is a fund raiser for our Region and we need at least 10 Cars for the Display. The Spirit Region’s
Board has set this activity as one of this years club activities so you will receive credit
toward 2011 Participation awards. We are counting on our members to make a good
showing on this Regional Fund Raiser.
We will set up our display on both sides of Locust Street around
Midtown Alley is
Garrison & Cardinal.
We need all of the cars to be in place before noon and remain until
5:00pm.
They will have venders selling food along Locust, or you can bring
your own food & drinks. Be sure to bring chairs.
Midtown Alley is currently planning the PR for this event and would
like to included our Classics as soon as possible. We need to know
who plans on attending & what car you are bringing.

that alone is’t a reason not to miss the October Spirit
night, we will give you another… author and St. Louis
transportation enthusiast Mark Goldfeder! Mark will be
our special guest speaker at October’s Spirit Night,
and will be entertaining us with his historical
knowledge of St. Louis and it’s classic era
transportation. Also, as part of his presentation Mark
will show us some beautiful street scenes from the
1920’s-1960’s highlighting the cars, buses, trains, and
trolleys that made St. Louis a transportation Mecca!

Mark November 6, 2011 on your calendar for the SSRCCCA annual meeting. This year the Kemp Auto Museum
will be our venue providing us a wonderful view from each table! Also, new this year will be the silent auction.
Those who have items for the auction are urged to contact member Ester Lauer as soon as possible.
Our guest speaker for 2011 will be the Executive Director of Kemp Auto Museum Mr. Rodger Van Ness. Mr. Van
Ness is a noted authority on vintage automobiles. His special interest is Mercedes Benz, the make primarily featured
in the museum; he is currently president of the Mercedes Benz Association of America. He was a personal
friend of the late Fred Kemp Sr. and assisted him over the thirty years he acquired his 40 plus vintage
European cars. Many of the cars in the collection are Full Classics @. In presenting our program Mr. Van Ness
will describe the more unique cars that will surround us during our dining experience.

purpose of the Classic Car Club®, and its Regions is “to further the development, publication and
interchange of technical, historical and other information for and among members and other persons
