Dear Friends and Colleagues,<br />

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to the Seventh International Endodontic Symposium <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>California</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry. Internationally renowned speakers from Argentina,<br />

France and the United States will present to you the most recent updates and advances in endodontics.<br />

In this year’s symposium we will pay a special tribute to <strong>Dr</strong>s. <strong>Al</strong> <strong>Frank</strong> and <strong>Dudley</strong> <strong>Glick</strong>. <strong>Al</strong> and <strong>Dudley</strong><br />

were instrumental in shaping what is thought, what is taught and what is practiced in endodontics at<br />

USC and around the world. Both were legendary educators and international leaders in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

endodontics who mentored and inspired many generations <strong>of</strong> students and oral health care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

A tribute in honor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dr</strong>s. <strong>Al</strong> <strong>Frank</strong> and <strong>Dudley</strong> <strong>Glick</strong> will be held at the opening ceremony <strong>of</strong> the<br />

symposium on Friday, November 14, 2008.<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. Slavkin is the G. Donald and Marian James Montgomery Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Dentistry and the Dean <strong>of</strong> the USC School <strong>of</strong><br />

Dentistry. From 1995 - 2000 he served as the Director <strong>of</strong> the National Institute <strong>of</strong> Crani<strong>of</strong>acial and Dental Research (NIDCR)<br />

<strong>of</strong> the National Institutes <strong>of</strong> Health. He is a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the American Association for the Advancement <strong>of</strong> Science and is a<br />

Member <strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong> Medicine and National Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences. He is Past-President <strong>of</strong> the American Association for<br />

Dental Research and has received honorary doctorate degrees from the Univ. <strong>of</strong> Maryland, Univ. <strong>of</strong> Paris, Univ. <strong>of</strong> Connecticut,<br />

Univ. <strong>of</strong> New Jersey, Univ. <strong>of</strong> Montreal and Georgetown <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Topic: The next frontier: Nanobiotechnology in clinical dentistry (Tribute Lecture)<br />

Syngcuk Kim, DDS, PhD, MD (Hon.) (USA)<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. Kim is Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Endodontics and the Louis I. Grossman Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Endodontics at the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania, School <strong>of</strong> Dental Medicine. He received his BA degree from Columbia <strong>University</strong> in 1972 and DDS degree<br />

from Columbia <strong>University</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Dental and Oral Surgery in 1976. In 1978, he received his certificate in Endodontics and<br />

in 1981 a PhD degree, both from Columbia <strong>University</strong>. <strong>Dr</strong>. Kim is Director <strong>of</strong> the Laboratory <strong>of</strong> Pulp Physiology and the<br />

Microscope Training Center at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania School <strong>of</strong> Dental Medicine. He received many distinguished<br />

awards, among them the AAE's Louis I. Grossman Award (1990), IADR's Pulp Biology Award (1991), Honorary Medical<br />

Doctorate by the Karl Franzen <strong>University</strong>, Graz, Austria (2002), Distinguished <strong>Al</strong>umni Award by the Columbia <strong>University</strong> School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dental and Oral Surgery (2005) and the AAE's Ralph Sommer Award (2006). <strong>Dr</strong>. Kim publishes extensively and has lectures<br />

frequently both nationally and internationally.<br />

Topic: Endodontic microsurgery: Theory and practice<br />

Nadia Chugal, DDS, MS, MPH (USA)<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. Chugal is Associate Clinical Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Director <strong>of</strong> the post-graduate residency program in Endodontics at the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>California</strong> Los Angeles (UCLA). She received her DDS degree as well as MS in Oral Biology and MPH in Public<br />

Health from UCLA, completed hospital-based General Practice Residency at IMMC in Chicago and received a certificate in<br />

Endodontics from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Connecticut. She was a research fellow and faculty member at UCONN until she joined<br />

UCLA as faculty. <strong>Dr</strong>. Chugal is Diplomate <strong>of</strong> the American Board <strong>of</strong> Endodontics and maintains a private practice limited to<br />

Endodontics. Her research interests include endodontic treatment outcomes and improving treatment prognosis.<br />

John West, DDS, MSD (USA)<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. West received his DDS from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Washington in 1971 where he is an Affiliate Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor. He received<br />

his MSD in endodontics from Boston <strong>University</strong> in 1975 where he is a clinical instructor and has been awarded the<br />

Distinguished <strong>Al</strong>umni Award. He is the Founder and Director <strong>of</strong> the Center for Endodontics and currently serves as Associate<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> Endodontics at the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry. <strong>Dr</strong>. West coauthored Obturation <strong>of</strong> the Radicular Space with<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. John Ingle in Ingle’s 1994 and 2002 editions <strong>of</strong> Endodontics and was senior author <strong>of</strong> Cleaning and Shaping the Root<br />

Canal System in Cohen and Burns 1994 and 1998 Pathways <strong>of</strong> the Pulp. He has recently authored Endodontic Predictability<br />

in <strong>Dr</strong>. Michael Cohen’s 2008 Quintessence text Comprehensive Treatment Planning: Principles <strong>of</strong> the Masters. <strong>Dr</strong>. West’s<br />

memberships include: 2009 President <strong>of</strong> the American Academy <strong>of</strong> Esthetic Dentistry and 2010 President <strong>of</strong> the Academy <strong>of</strong><br />

Microscope Enhanced Dentistry, the Northwest Network for Dental Excellence, and the International College <strong>of</strong> Dentists. <strong>Dr</strong>.<br />

West is a Thought Leader for Kodak Digital Dental Systems and serves on the editorial advisory boards <strong>of</strong> the Journal <strong>of</strong><br />

Advanced Esthetics and Interdisciplinary Dentistry, the Journal <strong>of</strong> Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, Practical Procedures and<br />

Aesthetic Dentistry, and the Journal <strong>of</strong> Microscope Enhanced Dentistry.<br />

Parish Sedghizadeh, DDS, MS (USA)<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. Sedghizadeh is Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Clinical Dentistry at the USC School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry. He received his bachelor’s degree<br />

in biology from UCLA, D.D.S. degree from USC and specialty training in Oral and Maxill<strong>of</strong>acial Pathology from the Ohio State<br />

<strong>University</strong>, where he attained an M.S. degree in oral biology and fellowship status in the American Academy <strong>of</strong> Oral and<br />

Maxill<strong>of</strong>acial Pathology. In Ohio, <strong>Dr</strong>. Sedghizadeh was awarded fellowship by the American Cancer Society for conducting<br />

research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, investigating the early molecular<br />

events involved in the progression <strong>of</strong> head and neck cancer. <strong>Dr</strong>. Sedghizadeh is a Diplomate <strong>of</strong> the American Board <strong>of</strong> Oral<br />

and Maxill<strong>of</strong>acial Pathology.<br />

Jean-Yves Cochet, DDS (FRANCE)<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. Cochet received his DDS from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Paris VII in 1984 and his endodontic training from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Paris<br />

VII in 1990. He has served as a Clinical Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Paris VII from 1986 to 1990. He was teaching<br />

at the post-graduate program <strong>of</strong> endodontics directed by <strong>Dr</strong>. J.M Laurichesse from 1990 to 1996. Since 1999, he has been<br />

teaching at the post-graduate program <strong>of</strong> Endodontics <strong>of</strong> Florida Southeastern <strong>University</strong> NOVA. He served as President <strong>of</strong><br />

the French Endodontic Society from 1998 to 2000. <strong>Dr</strong>. Chochet has made numerous international presentations on<br />

endodontics, traumatology and endodontic surgery.<br />

David Kelliny, DDS (USA)<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. Kelliny earned his BDS degree from Cairo <strong>University</strong> in 1992, DDS degree from USC School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry in 1998, and a<br />

certificate in Endodontics from USC in 2001. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Endodontics at the Division <strong>of</strong><br />

Surgical, Therapeutic and Bioengineering Sciences at the USC School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry. Since 2002, <strong>Dr</strong>. Kelliny has been actively<br />

engaged in mentoring and lecturing on various aspects <strong>of</strong> Endodontics with special emphasis on surgical Endodontics. He<br />

maintains 2 private practices limited to Endodontics serving the South Bay and West Los Angeles. He has been integrating<br />

dental implants into his private practice since 2003. <strong>Dr</strong>. Kelliny is a member <strong>of</strong> the AAE, CDA, ADA and the International<br />

Congress <strong>of</strong> Implantology.<br />

Marcela Fridland, DDS (ARGENTINA)<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. Fridland received her DDS degree from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rosario, Argentina in 1994, a certificate in Endodontics in1999<br />

and a PhD degree in 2005. She held a teaching position in the Department <strong>of</strong> Endodontics at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rosario<br />

between 1986-1990. Since 1990, she has been teaching in the post-graduate endodontic programs at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Rosario and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Buenos Aires. <strong>Dr</strong>. Fridland is an active member <strong>of</strong> the Argentinian Dental Association and an<br />

associate member <strong>of</strong> the American Association <strong>of</strong> Endodontists. She lectures frequently both nationally and internationally<br />

and has served on the editorial board <strong>of</strong> various journals. <strong>Dr</strong>. Fridland maintains a private practice limited to endodontics in<br />

Rosario, Argentina.<br />
