Confirmation 2006
Confirmation and Teacher Recognition Shabbat Service
With Blessing of Graduating High School Seniors
Our annual Confirmation weekend commences on Friday, May 19, 2006 when
Confirmands and their families share a special Shabbat dinner at 6:00 p.m., followed
by Shabbat service in honor of the Confirmation Class and their families at 8:00 p.m.
in the Kaufmann Sanctuary. The service will contain several special features,
including the presentation of Bibles and prayerbooks to representatives of the class
by our Brotherhood and Sisterhood.
All members are invited to attend this special service and the Oneg Shabbat
in honor of our Confirmands.
In addition, the service will include the blessing of all high school seniors.
All WHC teachers will also be recognized, with those who have served the
Congregation for 18 years receiving a special blessing.
Exhibit of Confirmation Projects
The original projects of this year’s Confirmation Class will be displayed in
the Kreeger Lobby during Confirmation weekend, May 19 to 21.
The projects, which represent a wide variety of works by our Confirmands,
include descriptions of their social service involvements in area hospitals, nursing
homes, homeless shelters, and tutoring; a significant number of incredible artistic
works: paintings, sculptures and photographic essays, and research papers.
Confirmation Service
This year’s Confirmation Service “Ki Va Mo-ed: It’s About the Journey” on
Sunday, May 21, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. will be a most impressive expression of
commitment of sixty young men and women of our Congregation. The service
developed by our confirmands will include original prayers, meditations, speeches
and songs. There will also be a dramatic, original multi-media presentation.
All members are invited to this festive and moving spiritual service.

SHABBAT
Torah Talk
Parshat Emor
In this week’s Torah portion, we are
instructed as to the counting of days between
Passover and Shavuot – the period
known as the counting of the–omer. An
omer is a measurement of grain that was
brought to the Temple for sacrifice between
the festivals of Passover and
Shavuot.
Every night, from the second night of
Passover to the night before Shavuot, we
recite a blessing and state the count of the
omer in both weeks and days. The counting
of the omer is considered, according to
tradition, a time of partial mourning. Thus
dancing, weddings, parties, special dinners,
and even haircuts are forbidden. This
excludes Lag B’omer – the minor holiday
that falls on the 33 rd day (Lag means ’33’)
of the counting of the omer – on which
festivities are allowed.
The counting of the omer is at once a
spiritual and mundane act. In the world of
agriculture, harvest is a time during which
farmers are extremely concerned with
counting. Yet, as Parshat Emor reminds
us, there is more to our work than just
counting. We read, “And when you reap
the harvest of your land, you shall not reap
all the way to the edges of your field, or
gather the gleanings of your harvest; you
shall leave them for the poor and the
stranger: I the Lord am your God.”
Thus the counting of the”omer is intended
to remind us of the link between
Passover, which commemorates the Exodus,
and Shavuot, which commemorates
the giving of the Torah. It reminds us that
the redemption from slavery was not complete
until we received the Torah. It reminds
us that, even as we bring in our
harvest from a year’s work, we are called
bring holiness into our lives.

Marcia Weinberg Reviews Saving the Lost Tribe
At Prime Timers Luncheon
Saving the Lost Tribe: The Rescue and Redemption of
the Ethiopian Jews by Asher Naim, former Israeli Ambassador
to Ethiopia, will be reviewed by Marcia Weinberg at
the Prime Timers Luncheon on Monday, May 15, 12:30
p.m., at Temple. Only twice in history have blacks been
taken from the African continent – not for slavery or
exploitation–– but for love and a better life. Both instances
involved the Jews of Ethiopia who were taken from the
Horn of Africa to Israel.

“Stars of David” Shine at Literary Program
Sisterhood’s Literary Group is going prime time! Noted
author, Abigail Pogrebin, will share her thoughts and
experiences as she interviewed 62 prominent Jews about
being Jewish for her book, Stars of David. This program is
an evening event on Wednesday, May 24, 7:00 p.m., at the
Julia Bindeman Suburban Center. Members and nonmembers,
women and men will enjoy hearing about her
conversations with people such as Steven Spielberg, Barney
Frank and Sarah Jessica Parker.
