LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP
he New England Revolution has participated in the
Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament seven times
Tsince the team's inception in 1996, earning a 5-6-2 overall
record in the annual tournament.
The tournament - the oldest cup competition in America
- the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, has existed for over 80
years, and incorporates soccer clubs of every level, ranging
from Major League Soccer pro teams to the amateur leagues.
The annual event, which began in 1914, ranks among the oldest
cup competitions in the world. The single elimination tournament
was born as the National Challenge Cup, and was
modeled after England's Football Association Cup format.
The U.S. Open Cup, which is open to all soccer teams
in the country that qualify, showcases an unusual mix of local
amateur teams and the leading pro teams. The unpredictable
nature of the tournament was exhibited in 2006 by the
Cinderella run of Roma FC, an amateur team from Dallas that
defeated two pro clubs - USL Division 1 team Miami FC and
MLS side Chivas USA - before falling to defending champs the
L.A. Galaxy.
To compete, a team must qualify in one of four categories:
Division I (Major League Soccer), Division II (USL First
Division), Division III (USL Second Division) or Amateur
Division (USL Premier Developmental League and U.S. Adult
Soccer Association). Forty-two teams - 26 professional and 16
amateur squads - make up the annual bracket after qualifying
for the tournament.
The tournament is single-elimination and was renamed
the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 1999 to honor the long-time
soccer supporter and pioneer. Hunt, the owner of the
Columbus Crew and Kansas City Wizards of MLS and the
Dallas Tornados of the old NASL, was one of the sports first
major ownership figures and is a member of the National
Soccer Hall of Fame. The winner of the U.S. Open Cup, in
addition to receiving a $100,000 cash prize, has its name
engraved on the Dewar Cup, the oldest trophy in American
team sports.
After choosing not to enter the tournament in their inaugural
season, the Revolution made their Open Cup debut in
1997, losing to the Long Island Rough Riders of the A-League,
4-3, in double overtime. Dahir Mohammed, who would go on
to play for the Revs briefly, scored the game-winner off of a
free kick from Jim Rooney, who would later become an MLS
All-Star and a member of the Revs.
After not entering both the 1998 and the 1999 tournaments,
the Revs returned to Open Cup action in 2000, this
time falling to the Premier Development League's Mid-
Michigan Bucks, 1-0. Chad Schomaker scored for the Bucks
in injury time, seconds before the final whistle. Goalkeeper
Eric Pogue, who was drafted by the Revs and was a late cut
during the 2001 preseason, stopped a Shaker Asad penalty
kick early in the match for Mid-Michigan, setting up the upset
victory.
In 2001, the Revs wrote some positive Open Cup history
for themselves, reaching the U.S. Open Cup Championship.
The Revolution avenged its 2000 Open Cup loss, routing Mid-
Michigan, 7-1, behind a pair of goals from Wolde Harris. After
a pair of 2-1 wins over A-League's Charleston Battery and the
Columbus Crew, the Revs defeated D.C. United, 2-0, on two
Andy Williams goals to move into the finals.
On October 27, 2001, the Revs played for the first
championship in team history against the L.A. Galaxy. The
Revs took the lead in the first half on a strike by Harris, but
surrendered the equalizer late in the second half. After Jay
Heaps was red-carded in the 88th minute, the Revs were
forced to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
With the game in overtime, the Galaxy's Danny Califf won the
game for L.A. with a header in the 92nd minute.
In 2003, the Revs were back in Open Cup action, ultimately
falling in overtime to the MetroStars in the quarterfinals.
The Revs opened up with a fourth-round match against
the Rochester Raging Rhinos. The Rhinos took the lead when
Stoian Mladenov took a pass from Doug Miller at the top of
the 18-yard box and fired a shot on goal. Matt Reis made the
initial save, knocking the left-footed blast off the post, but bobbled
the ball off the deflection and could not keep it out of the
net, giving Rochester a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. The Revs
answered back, getting first half scores from Taylor Twellman
and Steve Ralston to push the Revs ahead to the quarterfinals.
Then, on Aug. 27, the Revs and Metros battled into double
overtime until Amado Guevara scored the game-winning
golden goal in the 116th minute for the MetroStars as they
knocked the Revs out of the competition.
In 2004, the Revolution had yet another fourth-round
game against the Rochester Raging Rhinos; however after
120 minutes of action, New England lost the match on penalty
kicks. Tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes after a Pat Noonan goal in
the seventh minute for the Revs and a Rochester penalty kick
in the 61st minute, the teams played a pair of scoreless extratime
sessions before deciding the game on penalty kicks. The
Rhinos clinched the victory in just four rounds with a 3-1
advantage and advanced in the Open Cup draw.
In 2005, the Revolution fell 3-2 to the Chicago Fire in
the fourth round. The teams played two full 15-minute extra
time periods after the game was tied 1-1 through 90 minutes
of regulation. Chicago's Andy Herron scored two goals, including
the game-winner in the 99th minute. Revs midfielders
Shalrie Joseph and Andy Dorman scored for New England.
Rochester and New England met again in the 2006
fourth round, and after a 0-0 draw through two extra-time sessions,
the teams went to penalty kicks.
Tied at 3-3 after six rounds, Jeff Larentowicz converted
his attempt to send the Revs through to the quarterfinal round
behind a 4-3 penalty kick win in Rochester. In the quarterfinals,
the Revolution lost to the Chicago Fire, 2-1, after a second-half
penalty kick was called against the Revs at Toyota
Park. Taylor Twellman tied the score midway through the first
half after Herron scored the first of his two goals in the game.
In the second half, Herron converted the penalty kick to put
Chicago ahead and send the eventual 2006 Lamar Hunt U.S.
Open Cup champion Fire on to the semifinals.
