With strong support from the
Economic Development Board (EDB)
and good infrastructure, Singapore
has, over the years, developed into
a world-class chemical hub. Highly
diversified, the chemical industry in
Singapore comprises the oil refining,
petrochemical, specialty chemicals,
environment management, water and
chemical waste treatment, and display
technology sectors. There are currently
more than 95 leading petroleum,
petrochemical and specialty chemicals
companies based on Jurong Island
alone. Additionally, several local as well
as global chemical companies are found
within the industrial parks in Singapore.
The burgeoning demand for chemicals
has made the chemical industry one
of the key drivers of the Singapore
economy.
Clearly, both the chemical and biomedical science
industries are high-growth industries. To sustain
their growths, these thriving industries need people
specially trained in the chemical sciences.
A Head Start
“I am glad to have chosen the right course of study at the polytechnic.
There are abundant opportunities available in the diverse field of Chemical
Engineering. Though being one of the demanding courses in the polytechnic,
DCHE has prepared me well for a Chemical Engineering University education
as well as training me as a future Chemical Engineer. This course is constantly
revamped to be up-to-date in its curriculum so as to better equip the
students with relevant knowledge and skills.
The DCHE Student Chapter (DCHESC) has also given me a holistic education
in the polytechnic. The many talks and plant visits are certainly a boon
to students who want to go beyond classroom lectures about Chemical
Engineering. DCHESC has also enabled me to know more course mates during
such events. Being a Vice President in the EXCO committee, I have gained
rich experience in terms of events planning, effective communication and
teamwork skills as well as leadership qualities. I believe that such skills can
only be instilled if practised. I am thankful to the DCHESC for giving me the
opportunity to lead and learn.”
P. Mukkesh Kumar, Chemical Engineering student
“The Diploma in Chemical Engineering prepared me more than
adequately to work in the industry. The course helped me build strong
fundamentals on the industry subjects. The industrial attachment
programme and final year project kept me abreast with industry
developments. I was also able to complete my Degree in Chemical
Engineering at NUS ten years later. Now, through constant contact with
SP, I have been able to share experience and network with other alumni.
This has been absolutely beneficial to my day-to-day work.”
“I love this course as the modules are
interesting and useful. It gives me a better
understanding of health, food and people. At
the same time, it gives me an opportunity to
educate my friends and families on nutrition
and health related issues. Overall, I enjoy this
course very much.”
Rachel Koh, Nutrition, Health & Wellness student
“People are Nestlé’s most important
asset. In line with Nestlé’s corporate
vision of transforming from the world’s
leading food and beverage company
to the undisputed leader in nutrition,
health and wellness, there is without
a doubt that there is an increasing
need for people who are trained in this
area. We are willing to offer industrial
internship for selected students as well
as exploring potential employment for
your new graduates whenever such
opportunities arise.”
Mr Kevin Harty, Managing Director,
Nestlé R&D Centre Pte Ltd
“I chose this course over studying in a junior
college as this is the only course of this
nature that is available in Singapore and
more importantly, I have interest in both the
nutrition and dietetics areas. I firmly believe
that I have made the right choice. I enjoy the
course a lot as it contains many interesting
modules.”
Song Shang Qian, Nutrition, Health & Wellness student
“The programme would offer students
a good mix of competencies, marrying
Food Science & Nutrition; with Health
and Physical Fitness; not currently
offered by any other institution in
Singapore. This combined knowledge/
capability could help fill an industry
gap and strengthen Singapore’s value
proposition to attract more knowledgeintensive
activities and investments
from companies in the nutrition and
wellness business.”
SP has excellent clinical and laboratory facilities
and two Optometry Centres to provide you
with hands-on experience using state-of-the-art
precision instruments and equipment.
Diploma in
Optometry
(DOPT)
Optometry is the study of visual
defects and functional disorders of the
eye. The scope of Optometry includes
the detection of common eye diseases,
the management of binocular vision
problems such as squints and lazy eyes
and the prescription of spectacles and
contact lenses.
The Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) is a
three-year full-time course which aims
to produce professionally competent
optometrists serving as primary
eye care health practitioners in our
community. The Ministry of Health
and employers have projected good
demand for graduate optometrists
in the coming years due to high
prevalence of myopia in children and a
rapidly ageing population.
You will have the chance to widen your scope
and experience in Optometry during your
attachment either at selected hospitals, contact
lens or ophthalmic lens companies. Opportunities
also exist for you to undertake overseas
community service projects and attachments
to various Schools of Optometry and research
institutions abroad.
Career Prospects
There is currently a shortage of graduate
optometrists in Singapore and there will be
a healthy demand for optometrists in the
coming years. Our graduates are well suited for
employment as optometrists in private practice
or as employees of eye-care related companies.
Government hospitals and some statutory boards
also routinely employ optometrists. Alternatively,
they may choose to pursue a career in research
at institutions such as the Singapore Eye
Research Institute (SERI) and the Defence Science
Organisation (DSO).
DOPT graduates may apply for admission to the
two-year Bachelor of Science (with Honours) in
Optometry programme offered by The University
of Manchester (UK). The degree is awarded by
The University of Manchester and is equivalent
to the full-time programme conducted in the UK.
Conducted at SP campus, this will pave the way
for DOPT graduates to upgrade their skills and
knowledge by getting a coveted degree without
even needing to leave the country. This degree
programme is approved and subsidised by the
Ministry of Education (MOE).
We are the first tertiary institution
in Singapore since 1994 to offer this
unique course and our graduates
have enjoyed excellent employment
opportunities in the private and public
sector. Our graduates are eligible to
register as qualified optometrists with
the Optometrists and Opticians Board.
