Life at <strong>Roger</strong> <strong>Williams</strong><br />

Scuba Club: This club is for students who are already scuba<br />

certified, and those students wishing to become certified. The<br />

club organizes certification classes and group recreational<br />

dives, and supports faculty research utilizing scuba.<br />

Ski Club: Members share a common interest in Alpine and<br />

Nordic skiing, telemarking, and snow boarding. Students of all<br />

abilities benefit from discounted lift rates and transportation to<br />

various resorts in New England, Canada, and other ski sites.<br />

Stage Company: Theatre majors, minors, and anyone with an<br />

interest in theatre can join the Stage Company and assist in<br />

and learn all aspects of theatre production, including acting,<br />

costume and set design, and stage management.<br />

Students Against Destructive Decisions: Members of RWU’s<br />

student chapter of SADD plan and run activities throughout<br />

the year to educate fellow students about the dangers of<br />

drinking and driving.<br />

Student Volunteer Association: RWU students who care about<br />

the campus community and the Bristol community work on<br />

such activities as raising funds for the needy, awarding a RWU<br />

scholarship, and sponsoring blood drives on campus.<br />

Track Club: Members of this non-varsity, coeducational sport,<br />

supervised by the athletic department, learn all aspects of the<br />

sport and compete intercollegiately.<br />

Athletics<br />

<strong>Roger</strong> <strong>Williams</strong> <strong>University</strong> adheres to the policies, philosophies,<br />

and guidelines for National Collegiate Athletic Association<br />

(NCAA) Division III athletic programs. The <strong>University</strong> is also<br />

a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC),<br />

the Rhode Island Association of Intercollegiate Athletics<br />

(RIAIAW), and the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).<br />

Within the mission statement of the Athletic Intramural<br />

and Recreation Department, the premise is that properly<br />

administered athletic intramural and recreation programs<br />

contribute greatly to the total educational mission of<br />

the <strong>University</strong>. This philosophy supports the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

mission for the development of the total person – mentally,<br />

emotionally, socially, and physically – in a learning<br />

environment where students set goals for themselves and<br />

work, with the support of the <strong>University</strong> community, to<br />

achieve those goals.<br />

Varsity Sports<br />

The department offers 18 intercollegiate varsity sports and<br />

five club activities. For men, varsity sports include baseball,<br />

basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and wrestling.<br />

Women’s varsity teams compete in basketball, cross-country,<br />

soccer, softball, tennis, and lacrosse. Co-ed varsity sports<br />

include equestrian, swimming, and sailing. The <strong>University</strong><br />

also sponsors men’s rugby, co-ed crew, track and field, a riding<br />

equestrian program, and men’s volleyball as club sports.<br />

Intramural and Recreation Programs<br />

Teamwork and fun are at the core of our expanding<br />

intramural and recreation programs. We offer a variety of<br />

individual and team tournaments and leagues, including<br />

flag football, volleyball, basketball, softball, floor hockey,<br />

soccer and tennis. The walk-in recreation program provides<br />

aerobics classes on campus, weight training, cybex, rowing<br />

and exercise equipment, plus indoor tennis, soccer, basketball,<br />

volleyball, racquetball/squash, and swimming opportunities in<br />

the Campus Recreation Center. Special events throughout the<br />

year offer competitive opportunities based on demonstrated<br />

student interests.<br />

Sports Facilities<br />

The Campus Recreation Center, which celebrated its grand<br />

opening in the Fall of 2003, is the focal point of the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

athletic, intramural and recreational programming. This airconditioned<br />

facility seats 1,200 and includes an eight-lane pool<br />

with diving well, basketball courts, volleyball courts, stateof-the-art<br />

fitness center and aerobics/dance room, as well as<br />

racquetball and squash courts.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> also provides a variety of outdoor athletic<br />

facilities, including fields for softball, baseball, soccer, rugby<br />

and lacrosse, with a jogging path outside the Paolino Field. Six<br />

tennis courts are available for varsity and <strong>University</strong> community<br />

use. Four courts are lighted for evening play.<br />
